Among tbe late arrivals in Savannah, the papers announce that of Hon. D. L. Yulee, lato prisoner ol State in Fort Pulaski. A man was arrested in Savannah onThurs dny, on the charge of passing counterfeit money. Sixteen men, belonging to the ordnance corps of the U. S. regular army, arrived in Savannah on Thursday, and proceeded imine, diately to Augusta, where they ate to report for duty at the arsenal. They were under the charge of a sergeant and a corporal. Tbe editor of the Columbus Sun visited the Chattahoochee court this week, where he rrrtit, many of tbe farmers with whom he conversed in regard to crop prospects. He says : “In almost every instance.we found plane ters short of laboi—some one-fourth, some one third, while, some are short more than half their former force While few thsught they could see no differ nee in the disposi, tion of their freedmen to work, faithfully, tbe great majority made an unfavorable report.— All ure putting in heavy crops to tbe force, and most of the planters seent disposed to plant sufficient corn to meet the wants of the plantation. The Selma Times of tbe 27th says: Mr. Patrick O’Rourk, a clever and very in*, offensive man, in the employ of the Selma and Meridian Railroad Company, was shot on Sunday last, at Uniontown, by a man named Drake, and died from the effects of the same in a few minutes. The cause of the shooting was simply the refusal on the part of O’Rourk to give a walking cane, which he was carrying in his hand, to Drake. The murder is represented to have been one of the most deliberate and cold-blooded ever committed. Drake was at large at last ac. counts. The Advertiser and Register of the 28th says: “A negro man, whose name is un known, was shot and killed by John Shutter, ly, a watchman in Griffin & Harrison’s Cot tou Pickery, at about 12 o’clock last night. The trial of Major Gee is still in progress in Raleigh. The Charlotte Democrat says, we are glad to learn that the railroad bridge ov r the Ca tawba river (between Charlotte and Lincoln ton) will be completed in four or five weeks. The veritable “Old Scratch” has made his bodily appearance in Casswell County, N. C., in the shape of a great ball of fire ; at least, so reports the Danville Times, on “good authori. ty.” He was seen one night last week, swing ing himself, like a great fiery globe over the pig sly of a Mr. Hubbard, who, fearing that his sooty majesty bad an intention of roasting some of tbe potkeis, made at him, first with a big stick and then with a gun, to all which the Devil paid no attention further than to spit jets of sparkling brimstone at him, which so alarmed Mr, Hubbard, ‘-a man of candor and veracity,*’ that he fled the field and loft the “Old Boy” fully master of the position.
