The Military Commission in Savannah sat again on Saturday and resumed the trial of James A. Luucan for alleged cruellies to the ' Andersonville prisoners. Some additional > witnesses for the prosecution have arrived. The schooner Emma C. ALABAMA. i The negro soldier who recently attempted p an outrage upon a white lady io Mobile, has been turned ever to.the civil authorities for ' trial. The ex'entof the law in.snch cases, iu I . Alaba na, is imprisonment for life. j At a funeral at the colored bhri’Al ground in j the southern portion of Huntsville, o i Sun. i day la.l, a negto'man was shot in the thigh j by another negro. The shooting"is adeged to > have been accidental, as the negro who shot the other was himself shot in the hand at I the same firing. He is reported to have been very drunk aj r the v time. A weekly newspaper has made its appear- I arice at Demopolis, called tbeAVerw Era. The Demopolis Era says: “A meeting will be he held in Demopolis on the first Saturday in May, for the ptypQse of concerning meas- I ures for securing white labor, by means of foreign immigration. It has been proposed, to form an association, secure the services of„ a reliable agent, provide him with funds, and seud him to Europe for the purpose of em. ploving laborers there and transporting tbe.a to this section. The Huntsville Independent says, there is an immense amount of Corn consumed in this market—the whole country adjacent and t ie counties across the river, drawing its supplies from here. Just at this time we are informed there is n great scarcity of the necessity, very I little if any good corn is left at all. We learn froth the Columbus Enquirer that tbe Muscogee aftid the Montgomery and West Point Railroad companies are making arrang. meats for the close connection of their roads in a manner that will make the junction more perfect than It was before the destrucs tion of the Opelika Railroad bridge, which will be completed without delay. • Tbe track of* the Opelika branch is to be widened, from Columbus to Opelika, to the guage of the Muscogee road, and the whole put in operation it is thought by the 4th of July next. The probability is, too, that the widening of tbe guage of the Montgomery and West Point railroad will not stop at Opelika, but that soon trains will come through with out a transfer of freights. The Enquieer learns further that Mr. Cram, the eoergetic/SuperinteddentJofthe Montgom* eryand West Point Railroad, wasexpected to reach Columbus, Thursday evening, to close close a contract for the construction of the Opelika Railroad bridge over the Chattahoo chee, at that city, with Horace King, the re liable and accomplished bridge builder. VICTOR HUGO AND TUB MABBKK—HIS METHOD OY COMPOSITION. A Paris correspondent of one of tbe New York journals says: Going in to be shaved one morning, lasaid:I a said: "Well, Monsienr Brassier, ho* is businness to-day?” “Excellent, Sir, excellent; in fact, ■ almost more than I can attend to. Balls and parties everywhere. Here, you see, is a list of thirty ladies, Whoso beads are to be dress ed between now and evening.” Dropping in at Brassier’s ft few days after. I asked: “And bow did JS’U get on with your thirty lady .customers the other day?” “Don’t speak of it; couldn’t att nd to more than half of them. I and just lest a dozen or so good customersjC l along of Mr, Victor Hugo.,” “But how did I Victor Hugo have anything. to do with it?”— “Why, this was the way of it, Sir: jive I minutes after yon left, in he came and seated ’ hitiiself in this very chair. I pu( the napkin ! about bis neck, and was on the point pf put ! tiug xny brush tq him, when,.suddenly waiy- I ing off my hand, he cried out, ‘Wait a mins ! ute.’ And with that, he took out his pencil j and began fumbling in all bis pockets for something be did not find, Then, all at once, seeing a sheet of paper on the table i there, be took possession of it an 1 fe.l to writing. In spite of the” trurry I was in I . was willing to: wart for him to finish; but he, without paying any more attention t» me than (hough I ha t been at tbe other epd of ! tbe town, kept scratching on, stopping now ' and tbert to bite the end Os his pencil. Writs away, said /I to myself, but if you can read it afterward you are a lucky one. It wag a I horrible scrawl, Sir, yon may believe me And they pretend lie Is a good Writer! Then I said |to him respectfully. When you are ready, I Sir? Tn a second,’says; be, goss with j bis i,cribble, stopping for a minute to look i up at the ce li ig; an Ihben at it again; I mean j while, yon understand, witli brush aud soap. ' eup in tian 1, and ready to burs). Finally, I ventured to say: ‘Bgg pardon, Sir, but I am i extremely busy to day.’ ‘O, bqsy, are you?’ says be, ‘so am I,’ and with that he got up and Went out. ‘You have forgot yqur hai, Sir.’ said I. ‘Why, to be sure,’ says he with a smile, aud;Clapped it on, and went away without being shaved. ‘“Now boys',’ leaned td my journeymen, ‘yon have not a minute to loss ; you will go straight to tbe addresses I give you. The list here—but where is tbe list ? What have you done with the list?’ ‘lt was on the table there a moment ago,’ said one of the boys.— ‘Are yon sure?’ ‘Perfectly.’ Will you be lw«-«i<>, Sir, it was on the back of that list that Mr M. Victor Hugo bad been writing; and be carried it off with him all covered with his quail tracks, and that is the way he lost me my customers ” What the lovers of poetry and liberty have gained by M. Brassier’s loss, the narrator is not able to tell n«. According to another au thority, Hugo's present method of composition is scrupulously methodical, and admits num. berless changes, additions, prunings, and pol ishings of chapters, sentences and single words—between outline draft and manuscript ready for the printer. Balzac’s process of reworking a first proof with additions, excis. ions, etc., to the extent of making it worse for tbe printers than an original manuscript are well known. The author of the Vie de Ces rr not. being a Republican of Letters, but owner of an Imperial press, does not trouble himself with the ordinary technics of prbdf. reading, but corrects a first copy printed in broadly separated lines, by interlining and full marginal writing, as the humbler ones go over their manuscript. Affairs in Austria and Prussia. The London Times of the 80th remarked editorially that there was too much reason to fear that the peace of Europe was about to be broken by a most unnecessary war; but on the following day tbe Times fetilarkedf “We cannot persuade ourselves that Aus tria and Prussia, however fiercely they may wranglq, will actually fight. They have been on the verge of hostilities before without com. ing to blows. We can hardly avoid thinking, therefore, that they will find some way out of the present quarrel, desperate as it appears to be.” It is asserted that Count Mensdorff, the Austrian Premier, has made a positive state ment to the Prussian Ambassador at Vienna respecting the movement of Austrian troops, not concealing that Austria must be prepared for any extreme resolutions that might even tually be taken by Prussia. Vienna papers declare (hat Austria will not take the aggressive. It is reported from Venetia that the Com mission of Austrian Engineers is making a fninuteinspeetto-n of the numerous forts along tbe line of the Adige, and that the soldiers of the reserve on furlough have been called. A Berlin telegram asserts that the mobili zation of two army corps wilt be immediately proceeded with, The Government of Weimer has replied eva sively to the Prussian circular dispatch, and claimed Federal intervention in the question. The Vienna Debatte asserts that the West ern Great Powers intend to present identical notes at Berlein deprecatory of war. It is stated not only that a convention but a ' a formal treaty of alliance has been concluded between Italy and Prussia- Von Bismark is said to have addressed ft circular dispatch to the Prussian Embassador at the Courts of the Great Powers, directing them to protest against the extraordinary armaments of Austria. A Florence telegram says considerable arm aments are stated to be in course of prepara tion in Italy. German difficulties are still increasing, but no actual hostilities have occurred. Military preperatious were actively propressing. Gen Benedick had been ap; ointed the Aus. trial! comtnandertin.ohief. FftANCE—The Paris correspondent of The London Times writes that I’riqce Napoleon has left Parts tor Italy, after having several in— ter views with the Emperor. It is whispered that he is intrusted with admission to Vio. tor Emanuel, whicli could pot well be con fided to any inferior parsonage, and has re feri nee to the stale of affairs between Priissia and Au tin The correspondent adds : ‘I find that persons, who, up to the present inomeut, liavu refused to believe that anything likely to <H§tul*b 'the peace of Europe would come of the quarrel, are now far less incredu lous.
