Elkmsnts of English Composition.—For
lhe use of Academies and Schools, by
James K Boyd, AM. A S. Barnes A
Burr, New York. Conner & Huffhes, At
lanta. 1866.
We do not regard this ns a first-rate text,
book for schools. The work is inferior to
that of Quackenboss, which is also ot doubt
ful propriety in a school-room.
When the principles are well attained by
the pupil, he needs no further guide to com
position, As a guide to taste the work must
of course be valueless. To tax the mind <f a
pupil with long rules, and many of them, to
ehow him how a sentence should or should
not be constructed, is laying a price upon the
•rt of graceful composition, which few would
be willing to pay for its acquirement.
We are aware that this is becoming a pop
ular branch of instruction in our common
schools. Yet that does nol_alter our opinion
of its merits. So far as laying down a sys
tem of rules for composition is involved, this
book will answer the purpose about as well
as any of them. It is true that young pupils
would find a good deal of difficulty in getting
at the precise import and application of many
Os the rules, but those of them they can tin
ders and are about as good as are usually
found in such books.
Composition for the use of Schools, by F
Brookfield. New York. A. S. Barnes & Co.
Atlanta. Conner A Hughes. 1865.
This is a very convenient little book f< r
very small scholars who want to “borrow ’ a
little composition on a very small subject
The author intends by this book to guide the
mind of the pupil into a train of tbrought,
and in order to do that suggests a vatiety of
subjects upon which ho outlines a composi
tion, The tendency of such a book in the
bands of very youagnupils we fear would de
ter them from inculcating habits of indepen
dent thought. The best method of training
the young into a graceful style of writing is
to give them a subj-ct familiar to them, and
then throwing them upon their own mental
resources for all thoughts connected with the
subject.

Erin vs Ethiopia.—These two nationali
ties through individual membrq brought
their strength to a test, on Saturday evening,
which resuited unfavorably to the jolly up
holder of the Shamrock.
It seems that Pat had rented a bouse to a
“nager'' who was a shoemaker, and not very
forward in bis rents. Pat dunned him sever
al or more times, without pecuni ry result, 1
finally be ordered him to leave bis bouse.—
Africa refused, and the Fenian, while en !
deavoring to compel him to leave, ran bis i
bead against Africa's fist. Tho effect of the 1
colission brought Pat down on the portion
of bis body he usually sits on, and started
the claret from the side ot his head. Before
he could rise and collect his forces for action
Africa bad disappeared.
Pat did not much mind being whipped by
a white man, but to be whipped by a "nager’i
got his Irish up, and when we saw him last be
was swearing vengeance upon every individ
ual who bore the brand of Ham upon bis fores
head.
Aquatic.—This portion of our terraques
ons globe showed a little more aqua than
terra yesterday. It was tbe aquatic vent of
the seasou. It seemed as if April were try
ing to cry her eyes out about something, or
tbe clouds had contracted to supply tbe
•arth with water for a year, and had conclu
ded to deliver it all at once. It poured. The
gutters were miniature canals. Tbe streets
were in a perfect “slosh.” We saw only one
lady on tbe streets, snd her skirticoat was
muddy a foot up.
Eats Go Bbagh.—A grand mass meeting
of the friends of Ireland is called in front of
tbe Planters Hotel at eight o’clock to-night-
Bonds will be offered for aale, and an ad
dress will be delivered by Mr. Tooby, agent
of the Fenian Brotherhood. After tbe ad
dress a Fenian circle will be organized in tho
Planters Hotel. A full attendance of the
friends of Ireland is requested.
Niggir Fight.—A row occurred between a
lot of negroes near tbe corner of Lloyd and
Hunter streets on Sabbath evening. It was
all about a wench. Rocks flew at a lively
rate, and some of the sable combattants felt
the force of pretty weighty boulders. The
melee was kept np for several minutes, but
was finally stopped by a gentleman through
the moral suasion of a Colt’s Navy.

the Atlanta Medical and Surgical Journal is

It is neatly printed on fair white paper. !

The Methodist Southern General Con. ,
Terence.—The vote of the Conference re
quiring the Bishops to wait npon the Presi- !
dent of tbe United States on some business
connected with tbe pecuniary interest, of
that eclesiastical body, was moved to be re
considered on tbe 12tb. ‘
A report of tbe Bible Committee wai made.
Tbe destitution in the South is greater than (
at any former period of its history.
A hearty co-operation was agreed upon
with tbe American Bible Socie’y. A Bible
meeting will be held in a few days.
H resolution was introduced incorporating
tbe State of Illinois into the St. Louis aud
Missouri Conference.
It is supposed that a union has been effect,
ed between tbe Christian Union of Illinois
and the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
An English edition of Macaulay's Complete
Works, edited by hie sister, Lady Trevelyan,
is announced. It comprises eight volumes,
octavo; the first four coutaiaing the History
of England; the fifth, sixth and seventh, the
Essays aud Biographies; and tbe eighth, the
Speeches and Poems. Tbe editor remarks
that in preparing for publication a complete
uniform edition, it was thought right to in.
clade some portion of what Macaulay placed
on record as ajuriet in the East.
Beef at Cimciesati —An interesting trial
is in progress in the courts of Cincinnati bes
tween a cattle dealer and the Madison starch
factory of O’Neill Bayley. During the pro
gress ol the trial It has come to light that the
butchers of the Queen city have been charg
ing twenty-five cents per pound for slop fed
beef that they only paid five or six cents for.

The Latest and Most Important
DISCOVERY
OF THE
NINETEENTH CENTURY!!!
■
No mm’s name is more Intimately connected with the
history < f MATERIA MEDICA of the United States, vr
more favorably known as a pioneer in Medical Discove

John Bull, of Louisville, Kentucky.
Il s inimitable preparation cf Sar»ap«.rlll«. has
long stood at -he head of the various compounds of that
valuable drug.
His Compound of Wild Cherry lias be

throughout the
West
His Worm Losen

after their introduction, attained a
Reputation as wide spread as the continent of North
America. But the rrowoitigg'..ry of bis life remains to
be attained in hi. discovery, or rather combination. Cor
be. does not claim to have been the discover of CKO
HON, which is ti e basts of the Bitters now offered I.
the puli ic lliat h-nor belongs to the native inhabi
tants of Central America, to whom ns virtues have been
known for more than two hun lred y-ars. Armed with
it the Indian bids d. ft-noe to the mo-t deadly maian i
and handl is, without fear, the m st venomous serpent-
It is a belief with them, that while there ie breatli in tno

case may be.
While’ Pr. roll is not prepared to endorse this sxtr .va

And justly deserves the reputation it
has long enjoyed in Central America
and the West Indios.
IN DYSPEPSIA
And it* attendant train of symptoms it acts more Like
a Charm than a medicine. There is nothing in the
whole range o' Materia Med.ci that can fora moment
bear a coiopariso.i with it iu thia disease.
A full account of tins wonderful plant may be found in
the inn edition ofthe United S ates Dispensatory, pages
WB7 and 1888.
A seriesot experiment* in whicn Dr. Bull has been for
years engaged, has just been br -ught to a successful
termination, and he is now enabled to i.ffjr the public a
combination of Cedron with other approved tonics,
the wifole preserved in the best quality 01 copper distill
ed B urbon Wuisky, which ho is confident has no equal
in the w rid.
He might- furnish a volume of certificates, but the
public have long since learned to estimate such things
by their true value. The safest pl in is, lor everyone
to test lor himself the virtues of a new medicine.
