ALAB IMA.
We learn from the same source that there is
a gang o( thi ves in Russell county, Ala., who
make it their business to rob parties of mules,
horses, vegetables and provisions. At a gen'
tlemau’s house, five miles from Girard, on
Friday night, parties approaching the stables
were fired upon twice, but unfortunately both
shots miss d their aim. It is thought that the
thievts are negroes led on and incited to
plunder by mean white people.

The Seguin Texian s iys :
Rain, rain! mud, mud, is all that can be
complained ol now, and it the rain does not
cea?e for awhile, the farmers will be crying,
■weeds, weeds, grass, grass” - nothing but
weeds and grass. Never was the prospect
more flittering for good crops, both of corn and
cotton, ol which large ciops have been planted.
From present appearances, better c r ops will be
raised the present year than any year since
1854. We hope so, tor our farmers feel the
necessity ot a good crop year. Tney are be
hind, financially, and large yields the present
year, with the present prices of produce, will
enable many of th-m to settle old scores and
rescomtnence business another year with “hon
ors easy” all around..
The Got z ties Inquirer has the following :
In this county the planters are very much en
couraged. We have recently had some good
rains, which are having a sa ulatory effect up
on the young crops. The freedmen are work
ing well, and everything connected with the
planting interest is, as a general thing, going
on smoothly and satisfactorily.
The Register says abundant rains have fallen
of late, and the growing wheat never looked
more promising. It hears the most favorable
reports from all p irts of the great wheat re
gion of Texas. A gentleman from Hill gives it
as bis opinion that there will be twice as much
produced in that county as ever before.
Stock of all kinds has done remarkably well
the past winter through all the region about
Waco.
The Register corrects a state ment in some of
the papers concerning the number of spindles
in the “Waco Factory.” It gives one thousand
as the correct number.
Three large br ck yards are about to go in
to operation at Waco This is fine. Waco has
always been marked by enterprise, but seems
to be going ahead more briskly than ever since
the war. ,
F. J. Ward, of the Third Michigan Infantry,
was drowned on the 24th ult., while bathing
in the river at San Antonio.
The Ledger says there have been fine rains
recently, out there, and that the prospect for
good crops is flattering.
An old well was discovered in San Antonio
the other day, near tho Main Plaza, by some
workmen who were digging a cellar, they
came upon it some five or six feet beneath
the surface. It was walled up with hard
rock, and the top covered over, and had eves
ry appearance of having been made many
years ago.' The Ledger thinks it must have
been used by the old Spanish authorities as a
vault to secrete treasure.
The Texian, Seguin, of the 24tb, says : Col.
Ireland has quit the Convention and come
home—disgusted, we believe—and is not go
ing back, although that body has not yet ad
journed.
The Columbus Citizen says :
Burglaries are getting rather more common
than is pleasant heie-a-way. Since the rob
bery of the two safes—that of the Express
Company, at Alley ton, and one of J. M. Dan
iels, in Columbus—several little pettyHarces
ny raids have been made. The thieves even
had the temerity to enter Judge Gilmore’s
shop and purloin a few guns, articles which,
for a small cycle of time, have been given
free gratis to all who would use them.
The Dallas Herald says :
The great mass of the people of Texas are
as trne and loyal to the government of tho
United States as any of the Northern States.
We have never heard any man intimate a de
sire to take up arms, or in any manner resist
the laws of the United States, after h’e had
taken the amnesty oath. We know that the
people of this portion of the State are true
and loyal to tbe government, and desire to
see union and harmony prevail between tbe
North and South. We know that green
backs, for tbe last six months, have sold
higher in this portion of Texas by two per
cent, than in Boston or New York.
MISCELLANEOUS.
Tbe negro organ in Charleston, S. C., names
as its ticket for 18G8, Gen. Grant for Presi..
dent, Hon. Wm; D. Kelley for Vico President,
Charles Francis Adams for Secretary of
State, John A Bingham for Attorney General,
Schuyler Colfax for Secretary of the Interior,
John Minor Botts for Postmaster General,
Senator Grimes for Secretary of the Navy,
Gen. Sheridan for Secretary of War. This
is a very fair illustration of the hopes of the
negro and bis backers. They must not only
name the President, but dictate his Cabinet.
They know nothing of constitutions and laws,
and their prompters are willing to violate
both.
A law is pending before the Ohio Legisla

Congressional.
In the Senate on the I2lh, a bill reported
from the Committee on Commerce was pass
ed, authorising the Secretary of the Treasury
to remit any duties levied on produce shipped
from any port of tbe United States to any
port of lift) United States, via Canada, if the
said produce was actually tn transitu when
the recent Reciprocity treaty expired. Mr.
Stewart introduced joint resolutions propos
ing amendment to the constitution to the es.
feet that all discriminations among the peo«
pie because of race, color or previous condi
tion of servitude, either in civil rights or in
tho right of suffrage, be prohibited. They
were referred to the Joint Committee on Re
construction. The Senate, in respect for the
memory of the late Senator Foot, then ad*,
journed.
In the House the bill for the relief of army
paymasters w. . ■econimitted to the Commit
tee on Military’Affairs. A joint resolution
was adopted pro. esting ngainst the shipment
of criminals to this country by foreign na
tions. A concurrent resolution prohibiting
tbe sale of spiritous and other liquors in any
public building or grounds in the city of
Washington was adopted. Tbe bill appro
priating $25,000 for the temporary relief of
the destitute people in the District of Cos
lumbia, to be expended under the direction
of the Commissioner of tbe Freedmen's Bu
reau, was passed by a Vote of 100 to 24. In
respect for the memory of the late Senator
Foot, the House then adjourned.
The Assas-tnatios Charges Against Jef
ferson Davis.— A Washington letter of the
13th says:
The House Judiciary Committee ere bold
ing daily sessions for the purpose of examin
ing into the alleged connection of Jeff. Da
vis with the con; piracy plot to assassinate
Mr. Lincoln and dis Cabinet. It appears that
Judge Holt, who is at the head of tbe Bu
reau of Military Tustice, has been engaged
for a long time in accumulating evidence in
regard to this matter. He has got enongli,
it is claimed, sued as it is, to hang not only
Jefferson Davis, but all the leading officials
connected with tbe ex confederate govern
ment. This evidence has been transmitted
to the Judiciary Committee. .Most of the
testimony which has been furnished tbe gov
eminent is from persons of doubtful charac
ter. President Johnson always regarded it
as entitled to little credit. Secre a y Stanton
and Judge Holt thought it was sufficiently
strong to warrant tbe trial of Davis and oth
ers ity a military commission. What view
the Judiciary Coramirte will take remains to
be seen. They have it all before them, and
will shortly report the matter to tbe House,
with such recommendations as the evidence
in ther opinion will justify.
Tne body of a hired bey, known as Corn e
I'm, was found this morning oy the < fficers at
half-past ten o’clock. He was discovered un
der a baystack, a short distance southeast of
the dwelling, with his throat cut from ear to
ear. From bruises found upon his person it is
thought that he was struck in the head with
tbe pole of an axe, and either shot or struck in
the baeast with a fork. His body was found
by Officers Mitchell, Kepfier, and Tucker.
Officer Tucker also found tbe pantaloons and
coat of tbe Germic in bis room, with mirks of
blood upon them. His shirt and drawers were
found about a square from the baystack. The
detectives are upon the track, and but little
doubt is entertained of capturing the criminal
al su early day f .ii—4-lpbia Tclrgraph.
During the 35:h Congress, three bills passed
over tbe veto ot President Pierce. Tbe follow
ing are the titles ot the bills :
‘•An act to remove obstructions to naviga
tion in the month ot the Mississippi river, at
the Southwest Pass, and Pass A I’Outre.”
“An act making an appropriation for deep
ening the channel over the flits ot the St. Ma
ry’s river, in the State of Michigan.”
“An act making an appropriation for deep
ening tbe channel over St. Clair flats, in the
State ot Michigan.”
All of these bills, as will he readily inferred
from their titles, were based upon a common
principle. To this principle the President ob
jected. They originated tn the Senate, and
were all returned tbe same day. They passed
the Senate over the Executive veto on tbe 7th
of July, 1856, and the House on tbe 8:h. The
Secretary of the Senate and the Clerk of tbe
House of Representatives, attested the same
on the 7th and Bth of July, 1856.
Shipment of Arm- and Ammunition t
the South —The whole amount ot powder
shot, &c., shipped from the port of New York
to tha South from September 26, 1865, when
the trade was opened, to March 1, 1866, was :
Sporting powder, lbs 506,655
Blasting powder, lbs 10,600
Shot, ibr 2,953,862
Percussion caps ; number 44,991,644
Cartridges, number 4,897,304
Guns and pisiols 28.509
It is not probable that the regulations of
the Treasury Department, which require that
permits to ship arms and powder to the South
ern States shall be granted only on special
applications, will soon be changed, so as to
allow perfect freedom in the arms trade.
Steamboat Burnt on the Ohi»—Ten
Lives Lost. —Pittsburg, Pa., April 13 —The
steamboat Financier, bound from Pittsburg
to Now Orleans, was burned last night at
Remington, twenty miles below this city.—
Ten Lives were lost. Tbe boat and the cargo
—consisting of agricultural implements, iron,
nails, and glass—were totally destroyed. The
insurance on tbe boat was $25,000; on the
cargo, $25,000 —tn< s in Pittsburg offices.—
Tbe names of the lost were Emannel Rotbss
child, wife and two children, of Texas; tbe
wife and daughter of Captain Darrah, Thomas
Bolder (colored,) pantryman; two deck-hands,
and the Gremau Others of tbe crew were
severely but not seriously burned Tbe fire
was occasioned by tbe explosion of a petroß
eum lamp in the hands ot Mrs, Darrah.
A Washington letter of the 13th aays:
The Ways and Means Committee is still
assiduously engaged upon tbe tax bill. They
expect to be able to report br tbe first ot next
week. They find it very difficult to adjust a
measure which will stand tbe ordeal of both
Houses of Congress. Tbe tax on cotton has
been virtually abandoned. It is ascertained
that the tax which the commission proposed
of five cents per pound, cannot be properly
collected.
“President” Roberts. —The Fenian Presi.
dent Roberts thus speaks of tho probability
of taking the field:
We are using every effort to take the field,
and we will bo supplied with the means to
enable us to make, good our promises, and
with a rttitwed effort on tho part of the
Brotherhood all will be well Since tbe
Pittsburg Congress we have done wonders,
everything considered. More bas been done
by us in the way of accumulation of war ma
terials and organizing an army in six months
than was accomplished by the Fenian Broth
erhood in six j ears previously.
More Reconstruction Testimony —We
understand that the House Committee on the
Judiciary will on Monday report the testimo
ny ot Hon. A. 11. Stephens, Major General
Sheridan, Provisional Governors Sharkey, of
Mississippi, and Johnson, of Georgia, Mr.
Deßow, of Deßow’s Review, and others less
known to fame.
Wilmington, N. 0., April 13.—One of the

sinking the steamer. Henry Crosby, engi
neer, colored, of Newbern, is missing; James

and will die. All the rest ol* the crew were
