Itturder near Midway, Ky—The
Murderer Captured and Hung
by the Citizens.
Last Friday evenir.ii Mr. C. W. Nuck
ols, who lives between Midway and
Versailles, started his son, a boy about
thirteen years old, to Midway for his
brother, who attends school at that
place. He was riding a very spirited
horse, and, when about two and a half
miles from Midway, his horse became
unmanageable and threw its rider in the
road. Just at this lime a man, by the
name of George Meeks made his appear
ance in the road, and requested young
Nuckols to let him ride before him on
his horse to Midway, as he was going
to that place. Yoti ig Nuckols, being
afraid of his horse, consented to do so,
and the two started lor Midway about
5 o’clockp. in , from Mr. 11. Oflut’s shop, I
about two and a h 't miles from Mid
way, both riefing the same horse —Meeks
in the saddle and y’ mg Nuckols behind i
him. The boys not returning home as
usual from school, Mr. Nuckols and
some neighbors started for Midway
about 12 o’clock Friday night in quest
cf his children. When he reached
Uftut's shop he was told that his son
left there in company with Meeks,
but had uot returned He then visited
Mr. Shouse’s school, and found that his
son had not b< en there for his brother
as usual. The party then commenced
searching the road tor the boy, as they
were satisfied that he had either been
murdered or carried away by the man
Meeks. After looking all night,
they could learn nothing of his fate. —
Yesteaday morning a title son of Mr. G.
G. Thompson, near Midway, found young
Nuckols, body lying in the frass, near the
road, in one of his fattiers, fields, with his
head and body beat almost to a jelly with
a fence stake' The stake, lying close by
the body when found, had the marks still
on it. The murderer was afterwardes cap
tured near Oxford, Scott couniy, and
taken to Midway and confined in prison
at that place. At the time he was captured
he ’confessed to having committed the
murder, and gave as the reason that he
wanted the fine horse which the boy was
riding. .The facts became known to the
citizens, and they at once went to the
jail, Meeks out, near the place where the
murder was committed, and there hung
him to a tree Thus ended the career of a
most cowardly murderer. Louisville

A Stirring Scene. —The announce
ment created a scene only equaled in
recent years by that which ensued upon
the passage of the Constitutional Amend
ment. Two thousand persons in the gal
leries, and four hundred persons on the
floor at once broke out into most hearty,
genuine and long continued applause,
during which an adjournment was moved
and carried without a dissenting voice.
Washington Cor. N. Y. Trib.
Such a disgraceful scene reminds one
of the mobs which used to throng the
Assembly in the days of the French Rev
olution, and influence its deliberations
by their applause.
The Washington correspondent of the
New York Express says :
'‘lmpeachment of the President.— This
is certainly in contemplation, and is cer
tain to take place,, if the August, Octo
ber and November elections jus'ify the
hazard. The work is to be done next—
not this—winter, and thus Congress is
to sit this session as long us the mem
bers can be held together.
The Federal Dead. —By direction of tbe
Quartermaster General, Brevet Major James
Gleason, Quartermaster United States Army,
will start in a day or two to make a tour of
inspection of all tbe battle fields of Virginia
for tbe purpose of ascertaining as far as pos-.
Bible tbe number and location of rll tbe Union
dead that have been buried on the field. It
ii tbe intention of tbe government to have all
their remains brought to tbe Arlington
etery for intenuent, where a monument will
be erected to their memory.
Tbe German difficulties were still increas
ing. Prussia is mobilizing her army, and is
reported to have concluded a formal treaty of
alliance with Italy. The Grandducby ofWeis
mar has replied evasively to the Prussian cir
cular dispatch, and claimed federal i itervens
