Clean Up.-A.il tbe papers in tbe country
are raising the cry that the Cholera is on the
way to this country. In fact it has been an
nounced thnr some cases have already oc
curred. Two cases have been report.d in
Richmond. li is hinted that there are sonn
cases in New Orleans. Oue ease has beet,
reported in Mobile.
There can be little doubt that thn “pah
horse and his rider” will visit mant
cities of the United States this summer. Havo
we any guaranty that be will not visit Atlan
ta? None. Hence it becomes the city au
toprities to set our bouses in order at once,
and provide against its ravages as lar ns
is practicable.
Many portions of the city are in an ex
tremely filthy condition. Filth has accumu
lated to an extent which would endauger the
city even though we were not apprehending
■Cholera. Let these be all cleansed at once -
Let the Board ot health look to the back
yards. Read tbe ordinance onjirivies, and
see that they are properly constructed. Let
us have the city cleansed if possible, cleau
ont the gutters. Have no stagnant water
standing in open cellars. Let the owners of
•non cellars cover them or drain them. By
all means let every local cans- of pesti
lence be abated as soon as possible.

Tbe piece is courtship-ically divided as fol

occurs in every cou'tship -‘The r-conc.dat.i n"

lastly. “The Wedding.” Pr-f-ts-.r ii-nsler las

will spread its dimensions and talk bigger

look handsome and more handsome until it

An Important Bill—The Conservation of tbe Public
Morals.
Washington, April 15.
The House Committee on Patents will short
ly report.a bill on the prevention of immoral
manufactures. Tbe following are the main
points of the bill:
Section 1. Provided that any person aps
plying for a patent for improvement in the
manufacture of false calves, cosmetic wrstes
and ointments, waterfalls, frizzled hair, high
heeled shoes, extension hoops, or other arti
cles designed and used for the better exhibi
tion of women of the demimonde, or who shall,
without authority of law, manufacture, sell,
or encourage tbe manufacture or sale of any
such articles, shall be deemed guilty of a mis
demeanor, and, upon conviction, shall be
subject to a fine of not more than one thous
and dollars, and imprisonment for not more
than six months for each and every offense.
Sec. 2. Provides that any justice oi tbe
peace, minuter or other person authorized to
perform tbe marriage ceremony, who, know
ing that any woman has by such immoral de
ceptions and indecent exposures seduced any
man into promise of marriage with her, shall,
notwithstanding suco knowledge marry sucn
■ parties, shall be deemed guilty of a misde
meanor, and upon conviction shall be subject
to a fine of not more than one thousand dol
lars. And unless it shall be shown upon the
trial that tbe man bound by such marriage is
of notoriously immoral cba acter, a drunkard,
gambler or widower, the said marriage shall
be deemed and held void.
Tbe friebiote question has received some
prominence in Chicago, recent'y. A commit
tee of physicians was appointed, some time
since, to report whether the tricbii.au existed in
Western pork. Tney have examined portions
Os the muscles ot 1,391 bogs in the packing
bouses and butcher-shops of Chicago, and
found trichinae in 28 of the number, showing
that of tbe bogs brought to tbe Chicago market,
one in fifty is effected with triobiniasis in some
degree. Tbe committee observe :
"We must confess our surprise at arriving at
this result, which indicates, w th little doubt,
tbe startling fact that triebioiasin in pork is
eveu more common in this country Ilian in
Germany, where it caused so much suffering
and death. For instance, in the City of Bruns
wick, where a most careful inspection of 18 7 17
bogs was made in tha years 1854 5, only two
were found to contain trichiiat it. their mus
cles-the proportion b“iitg one to 10,000
against one to fifty es before stated in our
country. The compare ive immunity from dis
ease which our own people have enjoyed un
doubtedly results fiotu our b bi «>f cocking
meat before eating it, il« in Germany H e
eaten raw by tbe p f classes on account ot
the high price of fuel.”

Cholera.
Tbe near advent of this pestilential scourge,
the eases that hove already occurred in a
neighboring city, warn us to put our bouse in
order. Tbe disease is coming. It is nt our
very doors. That it is migratory, travelling
from East to West is true. That uncleanli
ness in a city presents a favorable attraction
to the monster is a fact too palpable to ad
mit, of controversy.
We bold (hat while it may not bo strictly
contagious, it is nevertheless infectious We
speak from some experience in ns manage
ment, an i are supported by the best medical
authority in our conclusion.
Cholera hid its origin in East India, and
for nearly a century has been recognized
lb-.-re as a loc.il disease. Ii has been especi
ally a prevalent local disease in that coun
try after a wet summer. In 1816 nearly 22,-
000 persons died of this disease in Calcutta.
In Bomb iy about 15,000. In 1820 to 1828,
tbe disease hitherto confined almost ex
clusively to East India, made visits to Prussia
and China lu 1829, however, it turned west
ward, and established itself on the European
borders, (Orenburg and Astraclian). It was
exceedingly malign mt, and consequently fa
ta! in these two provinces. In 1831, it visi
ted Riis-ia and decimated her population.
In 1832 it visited New York. In 1834, its
presence was again marked in New York with
increased violence. In 1839, ’4O, ’4l, ’45 and
’4B, it again appeared in New York. In 1849,
there were in three months in that city, near
ly 600 deaths from this disease.
From this brief synopsis we may gather
some knowledge of tbe operations of the
disease. We do not doubt that commerce is
the progenitor of this disease. This may ar.
gue its contagiousness. We will indulge in
no speculations as to tbe difference between
contagion and infection. We do not know
tbe medium through which it is transmitted)
but we do Snow that it never made its ap
pearance here until it was transmitted on
board emigrant ships.
So much for its history. We know that it
is coming, and already has it commenced its
work ot development on this continent. Since
we know of no preventive to its attacks, wo
should certainly endeavor to modify its sweep
in this already scourged country. Cruel war
has swept over our land, buried our sons, and
we can but illy spare hecatombs of vic ims to
a pestilential scourge. The only weapons of
defence, then, at our disposal are those which
the laws of Hygiene would strictly enforce.
Regularity in diet, an avoidanca of all ex
cesses, in either mental or physical effort,
would be much to mitigate its fury and serve
as an estoppel to its ravages. But above all,
the cleauliueis of our e ty must be tbe para
mount object kept in view. To disregard
this will prove the extremes! of folly. Then
how stands tbe case in Atlanta?
Some flatter themselves that our climate is
too salubrious to justify a serious apprehen
sion of a visit from Cholera. Be not deceived.
Its history does not prove that it has ever
been confined, since it commenced its wan
derings, to any geographical locality. Too late
to pause when we are already threatened with
its pretence. What is done should be done
quickly. July and August will be too late.
Let us enlarge our Board of Health, place
scientific physicians on duty who will labor
faithfully and energetically towards the
thorough cleaning of our streets, and premia
ses ot our citizens. From personal obset
vation we know that there is a full supply
ot material bey: to add to the virulence of
this fliS'i-ise when once it has obtained a loot,
bold amoi g u-t. Then let our authorities see
to it ibat no blame attaches to them wnen tbe
dread day his arrived. They are forewarned,
let them be tore-armed. Already has the work
of preparation commenced in the Northern
cities. Every means that can be adopted are
employed lo abate tbe violence of this approach
iug disease. Shall we of the South prove less
unmindful of our true interests? In view of
tin Bpproiioniug danger what preparation, is
Atlanta and the cities of the South making to
rescue their citizens from this fearful ma a ly.
