A Governor Half Shaved.—Tbe Legisla

shop about ten minutes before ten o’clcck,
and placed himself in the arm chair to be
shaved, nt the same time giving tbe boy his

I Reported Capture of a Valuable Tram by tho Liberals
,000 in Specie sod to have been Cnpturi-d—lm
perialists Successes Reporter!, ha., &c., *c.
New Orleans, April 17;
Advices from Brownsville say it was res
ported there that the Liberals had captured
a wagon train between Paros and Monterey
with $200,000, nnd killed and captured about
i two hundred French soldiers. Tho train con
; sisting of one hundred and fifty wagons, left
Monterey about the Ist of April, with sup
plies and money for Matamoras, escorted by
one thou and four hundred Imperialists. Ger*
oral Canales and others, with about two
thousand four hundred Liberals,and Navujos
with the Liberal cavalry, left Carmago on the
3d to intercept the train. Mejia had left
Matamoras to meet the approaching small
column. General Olivera, commanding Mats
ftmoras during his absence, will provide
against any attack.
The Courier says that it is rumored that
the train from Monterey has already been at
tacked and captured twelve miles above Mat
amoras; that Mejia has been defeated ; that
Matamoras will be attacked to-day or tow
night; and that Bagdad has been taken. But
none of these stories are reliable.
Tbe Matamoras Ranchero speaks encourag
ingly of General Gulty’s administration on
the border. Emigrants are continually atrivs
ing at Matamoras from the States in large
numbers
The Matamoras Ranchero of the 13tb, says
the Imperial forces under Joonigross arrived
at Cberco Escandido on Sunday last, twenty
two leagues from Matamoras. A short dis
tance beyond that point Canales endeavored
to dispute his passage, but was repulsed by
Lopez's regiment, losing twenty-two killed
and a large number of wounded. Two hun
dred wagons accompany the Jooningross ex
pedition, which is provided with every requi
site for a thorough and active campaign. A
special train leaves Monterey soon, under
Trenins, for Matamoras. General Mejia is now
with Jooningross arranging plans for opening
the campaigns against the Liberals. No fears
are entertained for Matamoras, which is inis
pregnable against attack. Victoria, Saltillo,
Monterey, nnd Chihuahua are fortified.
Eseobado, Canales and Cortina appear to
be operating independent of each other Can.*
ales is up the river, and Cortina between Mat
amoras nnd Victoria. Eseobado has with
drawn in the direction of Luzores.
Why the Cholera. Cornett from
the East.
Tbe Philadelphia Enquirer, under the
above caption, has the following:
Tbe name Asiatic Cholera indicates the in
variable origin of this dreadful disease.—
When, in modern times it first appeared,
about thirty years since, there were various
theories as to its causes. Some said that in
tiie lice and light food of the Asiatics tbe
disease took its rise Later observation has
demonstrated that the filthy habits and want
of personal cleanliness of the Orientals cause
the dreadful securge, which, commencing
wher- tbe provoking circumstances are most
abundant, travels tbe earth wherever it finds
food. Os course, in the time of infection, the
cleanly who are exposed to the fatal influ
ence often suffer with the negligent, but the fact
is undisputed, that thorough ventilation and
cleansing, disarm, if they do not prevent the
pestilence
Tbe French Government, as our readers
are aware, some time since dispatched a comi
mission to investigate the causes of cholera.
The conclusion reached by their investiga
tions is, that the Mecca pilgrimage is a sort
of pestilence center Tbe introduction of
steam navigation has doubled tbe danw-.i- anA
cholera by no means suc
ceeds upon even annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
So, admitting the evils which follow the pil
grimage, we must look to tbe daily careless
habits of the Orientals for the scourge that
culminates at distant intervals. Tbe poets
have led us to think of the East as a country
of fountains and perpetual haths and wash
ings. Nothing coutd be farther from the
truth. Many of the much-talked of ablutions
are mere forms, not so thorough even as
those of Tittlebat Titmouse. Ho did wipe off
tbe soil with a damp towel. But thousands
of tne Asiatics are crusted in dirt, which
stays with them from childhood till they
back to tbe kindred dust in which they lived
all their days in a closer relationship than
Christians have any idea of.
A book recently published in England, the
work of a governess in the harem of the Tur
kish Saltan, represents the whole establish
ment as varying only from gilded to ungilded
nastiness. The wives, whom the poets would
have us think scarce human in their etherial
personal purity, are dreadfully dirty, with
pcpulous beads, and, except at intervals, in a
slovenly dishabille which Brigham Young
would never endure. And their toilets are
said to be made without any regard to the
useless trouble of soap and water. The poor
negroes of Africa are a thousand times as
cleanly.-
These facts incline us to the opinion that
the functions of the skin need special care
and attention, if we would fend off tbe
scourge. It is necessary that the public au
thoriries do their duty, and all offensive sub
stances be removed from their streets and
lanes, and that house-holders carefully clear
their premises of all decaying matter.
But there are those wbo have not the op
portunity, and there are too many wbo have
not the inclination to attend strictly enough
to personal cleanliness. If public baths could
be established in our crowded districts, and
the people as well as tho premises be scoured,
a vast benefit would result. Tbe wearing of
flannel next tbe skin, especially by laborers,
is another precaution which all who can
should adopt; and tbe army shirts now so
common, would facilitate tbe general intro
duction of the custom. This flannel should
be often changed; if daily, so much the bet
ter. It has tbe advantage that it is easier to
wash than cotton, and thus the want of time
of indigent housekeepers would be favored.
The sensible mechanic or laborer who will
be sure not to sleep in the same flannel in
which he has labored through the day, and
wbo will not wear tho same two successive
dajs (even though that which be lays aside is
merely ventilated) would find it such a cheap
and easy course of hygiene, added to proper
care of his premises and reasonable attten
tion to diet, a preventive not only of cholera,
but of many other diseases. Sailors choose
flannel shirts for wear in the tropics. When
once accustomed to them they are found
more pleasant than any other fabric.
