Such a request on my part, M a compliance with it on their’s, might he considered pliant action. It could scarcely be reconciled with re- k’ctful acquiesence in the declared purpose, of the con- •olling power. Such acquiescence, (so fur as duty to ray KMtituents may permit,) is the line upon which I am poived to move ; and I am happy to see the General As hby pursuing the same course. It may be, that their -’■)oipt compliance, already accorded to tw»> emphatic •commendations of the Provisional Governor, will enable f Authorities of the United States to discern, more fully, M 'more accurately, the true spirit of our people. To say that we must pursue the course indicated by President, because we are powerless, does not disclose •-whole case. The Congress of the United States, not -mg been in session since the cessation of hostilities, un- the present week, the whole burthen of pacification, •'• restoration, has been upon the President. Under his 'pices, and by his direction, all advances to that end, been made. During their progress, he has spoken i <y words of kindness, and encouragement, lie surveys [ r'a hole field, of which we have but a partial view. Cutties, of which we dream not, encompass him. If we be patient, if we be trustful, we may M he hopeful. furthermore, I think, situated as we are, my inaugura ls without recognition by the Government of the United would be both barren of results, and, in itself, of vcstiotiable propriety. Barren of results, because if in- U'urated to-day I could do no official act. Of ques- | J|j ab!e propriety, because the oath of ofiice, which is I s uwence of tbe inaugural ceremony, binds the officer, the moment it is taken, to-the discharge of bis duties ; ,: ' v el! on that day, as on tbe last of the term or any inter- one.
