24NCISCO, Dec. 11th, 1871.
Editor oouTHEEN 6alitfornian :—
I notice that there is a good deal being
said through the papers upon the sub
ject of Cotton raising, and the adapt
ability of the climate and soil of Cali
fornia for the same, and one would
suppose from the arguments, that
there could be no other crop as remu
nerative, or as beneficial ta individu
als, and the prosperity of the state,
and now that there are so many look
ing anxiously, for the results of the
last year’s experiments, and as our
planting season is rapidly approach
ing, I wish to put before the people,
and especially those farmers near An
aheim, that there is another crop vast
ly sitgohor, both in profit and in safe
ty, and which will give any one a for
tune in a very few years, and that
crop is “Ramie.” The advantages are
many ever any other crop. It is a
very hardy and vigorous grower, it
will withstand the longest drought
and the most excessive rains without
injury. It has no enemies, while cot
ton may be totally destroyed by the
army worm or other insects. After
the plants become rooted it fills the
ground full, like a wheat field and the
foliage is so thick that the weeds can
not grow and the ground keeps always
moist, and then there is no more culti
vation to do, and the harvesting will
go almost constantly on as a crop may
be cut three and four times a year. It
yields from 800 to 1200 pounds to a
cutting, and sells in London at from
8250 to $400 per ton. It can be har
vested in the morning, and at night
ready to send to market. It does not
wear out the soil. The refuses is
spread on the field which is all the
manure ever wanted. The fibre is
nearly equal to silk, and goods are
made of it from the finest gauze to the
heaviest canvass* It can be cut with
a reaper or mowing machine, and the
machine for extracting the fibre will
clean some 1,600 lbs. a day the cost of
which will be about $500. Parties in
San Francisco will purchase all that
can be raised, or it can be shipped di
rect to London or Liverpool. A per
son raising it at the Sandwich Islands
writes that after cutting one crop it is
ready to harvest again in seven weeks,
thus giving him at least 6 crops per
year. Let the farmers take hold of
of this enterprise and they will have
something that will far exceed their
expectations and on the low moist
grounds it will be independent of rains.
Some say they want to see it tried to
be sure of it. They need not wait for
that as it has been thoroughly tested
in the Southern States for the last six
years, and in Alameda county, Califor
nia, for two years, and it fulfills ali
that has been said of it.
A London merchant writes that the
best fibre they get is from the United
States, and urges people to go into it,
as it is a “big thing,” and there is a
market for all that can be sent. It
requires but little starting capital.—
Let each man commence with 1,000
plants, enough to set an acre, and the
following year he will have enough to
put out fifty acres if he chooses. They
can be set out any time. All infor
mation and instruction will be given
by the subscriber, who intends to be
in Anaheim in January.

Dry Earth Treatment of Wounds
and Bruises.—Editors Southern Culti
vator :—Although most of your read
ers are probably familiar with the
“Dry Earth” Theory ; yet it may not
be uninteresting to them to hear of
one or two instances, in which the
magic touch of old Mother Earth, ef
fected rapid, and I may almost say,
wonderful cures.
In September, a negro Had his face
severely burned by the explosion of a
can of powder, containing about half
a pint—which he was carrying in his
band. The accident occurred on Mon
day ; next day his entire face was one
running sore, and so much swollen,
that it was impossible to distinguish a
feature. I suggested that it should be
dressed two or three times a day with
dry sifted earth. On Thursday when
again visited, the inflamation had en
tirely subsided, his eyes were open ;—
alljpain and disebargegone ; and with
in the week he was entirely cured.
Another laborer sliced bis fingers
with a reaping hook, and applied a
plaster which caused suppuration. By
my advice, he tried dry earth ; and in
a few days, his hand was as well as ev
er.
The third trial was on a mule, which
had its leg cut with an axe. The
wound was about six inches long, by
three inches wide ; having found the
earth treatment so beneficial in the
other cases, it was again tried, and
proved a perfect success. The wound
healing entirely, in three days from
the first application.
The above cures may seem exagger
ated ; but I must say that no one was
more astonished than myself; and a
faithful trial of the same application
will convince the most skeptical ol
of your readers. Will any one who
may try it, in similar cases, be kind
enough to report (their success (for
there is no failure) through the pages
of your Magazine, and oblige your
well wisher?

Ayer’s Sarsaparilla,
FOB PI BIFYUO TUB BLOOD.
The reputation this ex
cellent medicine enjoys,
Is derived from its cures,
many of which are truly
marvellous. Inveterate
cases of Scrofulous dis
ease, where the system
seemed saturated with
corruption, have been
purified and cured by it.
Scrofulous affections and
disorders,which were ag
gravated by the scrofu
lous contamination until
they were painfully afflicting, have been radically
cured in such great numbers in almost every sec
tion of the country, that the public scarcely need to
be informed of its virtues or uses.
Scrofulous poison is one of the most destructive
enemies of our race. Often, this unseen and unfelt
tenant of the organism undermines the constitution,
and invites the attack of enfeebling or fatal iliseases,
without exciting a suspicion of its presence. Again,
it seems to breed infection throughout the body, and
then, on some favorablo occasion, rapidly develop
into one or other of its hideous forms, either on the
surface or among the vitals. In the latter, tuber
cles may he suddenly deposited in the lungs or
heart, or tumors formed in the liver, or it shows
its presence by eruptions on the skin, or foul ulcer
ations on some part of the body. Hence the occa
sional use of a bottle of this Sarsaparilla is ad
visable, even when no active symptoms of disease
appear. Persons afflicted with the following com
plaints generally find immediate relief, and, at
length, cure, by the use of this 8AR8APARIL-
I.A: St. Anthony f t Fire, Rose or Erysipelas,
Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scald Read, Ringtrorm,
Sore Ryes, Sore Rare, and other eruptions or
visible forms of Scrofulous disease. Also in the
more concealed forms, as Dyspepsia, Dropsy,
Heart Disease, Rite, Rpilepsy, FeuraTgia,
and the various Ulcerous affections of the muscu
lar and nervous systems.
Syphilis or Venereal and Mercurial Diseases
are cured by it, though a long time is required for
subduing these obstinate maladies by any medicine.
But long continued use of this medicine will cure
the complaint. Reueorrhoea or Whites, Vterine
I'lcerutions, and Remale Diseases, are com
monly soon relieved and ultimately cured bv its
purifying and invigorating effect. Minute Direc
tions for each case are found in our Almanac, sup
plied gratis. Rheumatism and Gout, when
caused by accumulations of extraneous matters
in the blood, yield quickly to it, as also TAver
Conijilaintn, Torpidity, Congestion or Inflam
mation of the hirer, and Jaundice, when arising,
as they often do, from the rankling poisons in the
blood. This SARSAPARILLA Is a great re
storer for the strength and vigor of the system.
Those who are Languid and Listless, Despon
dent. Sleepless, and troubled with Ferrous Ap
prehensions or Fears, or anv of the affections
symptomatic of Weakness, will find immediate
relief and convincing evidence of its restorativo
power upon trial.

VEGETABLE SICILIAN
HAIR
ENEWER
Every year increases the populari
ty of this valuable Hair Preparation ;
which is due to merit alone. We
can assure our old patrons that it is
kept fully up to its high standard;
and it is the only reliable and perfect
ed preparation for restoring Gray
or Faded Hair to its youthful color,
making it soft, lustrous, and silken.
The scalp, by its use, becomes white
and clean. It removes all eruptions
and dandruff, and, by its tonic prop
erties, prevents the hair from falling
out, as it stimulates and nourishes
the hair-glands. By its use, the hair
grows thicker and stronger. In
baldness, it restores the capillary
glands to their normal vigor, and
will create a new growth, except in
extreme old age. It is the most eco
nomical Hair Dressing ever used,
as it requires fewer applications,
and gives the hair a splendid, glossy
appearance. A. A. Hayes, M.D.,
State Assay er of Massachusetts, says,
“The constituents are pure, and care

DAVID DICKSON, Esq., Oxford, has used Eureka several years, and repeats
that it is the best Commercial Fertilizer he ever used.
Newton County, Ga., November 30, 1871.
I used the Eureka Ammoniated Superphosphate of Lime the present year,
applying about 90 lbs. per acre. It increased my cotton more than double
the natural soil, same quality of land and cultivated alike. J. C. Cowan
Newton County - , Ga., November 28, 1871.
I have used the Eureka Fertilizer two years, and it has paid me better thae
any fertilizer I have used according to the price. James Hartwell.
Daviseoro, December 6,1871.
Messrs. F. W. Sims 4' Co , Savannah, Ga :
Gentlemen—I have used the Eureka this year, and it has given entire sat
isfaction. Used beth on corn and cotton. I cheerfully recommend it to the
planters as a Standard Fertilizer, and one that will pay as well as any other
used. Yours, very respectfully, W. A. Morgan.
* Davisboro, December 20, 1871.
Messrs F W Suns 4* Co., Savannah, Ga :
Dear Sirs—I have used commercial manures ever since the war, and I un
hesitatingly pronounce the “Eureka” sold by you, the very best I ever used
on cotton. B. F. Fleming.
Thomaston, Ga., December 19,1871.
Messrs F. W. Sims fy Co.
I used one Ton of the “Eureka” fertilizer on cotton this year, and am well
pleased with the result. It paid me a good profit in the investment, notwith
standing unfavorable seasons, and I expect to use it more extensively next
year. Yours, truly, D. Huff.
Thomaston, Upson County, Ga., December 12, 1S71.
Messrs. F. W. Sims 4' Co., Savannah, Ga.:
I used 1A tons of the Eureka Fertilizer as an experiment this year, and am
well pleased with the result. I am satisfied it paid me a profit, notwithstand
ing the unfavorable seasons and bad stands. I made over a bale to the acre,
with about half a stand, on land that would not produce more than half a bale
to the acre without the use of Fertilizers. Expect to use the Eureka again
nextyeai. Yours truly, O. R. Garsidk.
Lumpkin, November 2, 1371.
Messrs. F. W. Sims Sf Co., Savannah, Ga.:
Dear Siks—The Eureka compares very favorably here with other fertilizers.
Dr. Stokes used it on a small piece of corn planted in very poor sandy land,
and made at the rate ef 10U bushels to the acre. He is much pleased with it.
Yours, respectfully, Rockwell Stokes, Lumpkin Co.
Midway, Ga., December 8, 1871.
Mr. Skinner, Agent for the Eureka Fertilizer :
Dear Sir—I am much pleased with the result from the use of the Eureka.
From the limited experience which I have made witli the ton used the last
season, lam confident that the Eureka paid me fully 25 per cent, yield upon
the land where used. I used from 50 lbs. per acre up to 300 lbs. to the acre,
but found that 100 lbs per acre paid me best; with that amount there is no
danger from the drought. I used part in the drill and part upon the seed
when planted, by rolling the seed in the Eureka. I used the Eureka upon
corn lrom 50 to 100 lbs. per acre; 50 lbs. made the best ear; the 100 lbs.
made the best stalk and fodder. I have used the Eureka upon turnips, melons,
&c., with good results. I expect to make use of the Eureka another season
upon all the land that I may plant. Yours truly, Wm. Barnes.
