There is scarcely a reader of a newspaper in the
country who has not seen the announcement of those
famous seed growers and merchants of Rochester,
New York, Briggs 6c. Brother - whose seeds are to be
found in almost every town and hamlet in America—
bu! have noticed the announcement that one or both
of their elegant tiower chromos could he obtaiued upon
certain conditions specified in their illustrated cata
logues for 1872, itself a grand work. The uninitiated
would say.'‘Oh I it can’t be a real chromo, or they
could not be sold at seventy-five cents or given away
with a $o order for seeds,for I know that a genuine cii'O-
mo costs from $ID to $20” And thinking that per
haps chromo is only another name for cheap print
they drop the subject uutil perchance a ueighboi who
has obtained one of these charming pieces proves for
them that the Briggs chromos are uot mere flower
plates but actual chromo lithographs, and gorgeous
and lifelike representations of Lockhart’s original
paintings of flowers grown and raised by Briggs 6c
Bro., who are practical growers as well as seedsmen
in a commercial 6euse. The reason these chromos can
be procured so cheaply are iwo -- In the first place
they are printed by thousands, each additional thous
and making the cost proportionately le.-s. Secondly,
they are sold at bare east by Briggs & Bro., who swell
their already immense seed trade by the circulation of
these beautiful gems of art. The two chromos are
called, “The Collective” and‘‘The Lily,” the former
executed by C. F. Mnnt< &. Co., the celebrated chro
me lithographers of Rochester, N. Y, and the latter
by Clay, Cosnck &. Co., of Buffalo, N. Y., whose work
needs no praise at our hands. They are, really, com
paniun pieces, and representative engravings of them
are presented in the beauliiul illustrated catalogue of
Briggs6c Bro for 1872. We advise our readers who
have not already done so to possess themselves of one
of these catalogues, (which is sent post-paid lor twenty-
five cents,) after seeing which they will undoubtedly
make an effuit to obtaiu one or both chromos.
Photography At Brown * Kallcry.
BT JAMES M ARTHUR.
1 do declare you would have laughed
To see this poet photographed !
His glossy skin of sable hue
Makes splendid photographic view.
Go to the gallery new up town,
In Stetson’s building oped by Brown,
And see the manly countenance,
With fire poetic in his glance,
Imparted by the Artist’s skill—
Then have yours taken. Yes, you will.
My portrait’s made as an example.
You’ll see by looking at this sample
That but the outside view is takes :
The inside view of man would waken
Astonishment to his best friends—
The crooked tricks—the wicked ends
lie compasses by day and night
Would put himself and friends in fright.
Fear not! for Brown well understands
The job he takes upon his hands,
And pictures hut the outside features
Of earth's lair-seeming beauteous creatures.
All the dark seas that lie within—
Wide gulfs, and deep, of taint and sin,
Show not upou the surface fair,
Bat only smiles and virtues there.
Dear Reader this may not suit you,
But that it suits me is moA true.
So go to Brown’s— one way, or t’oher,
It matters not to make a bother.
He takes good pictures ! That’s enough ;
Aud in his business, “up to snuff”
Is better posted beyond doubt
Than others who have ta’en this route ;
And while he does remain in town
He’ll take your pictures “done up Brown.’’
