1,500 Lives Lost
The morning papers contained in sickening detail an account of
the most horrible marine disaster in history. The steamer Titanic, the
largest vessel in the world, was on her maiden voyage, and aboard were
macy prominent persons. It is reported that John Jacob Astor and
wife were aboard the ship, but had not been learned this morning wheth
er or not they were among the lost. Itis thought that about six hundred
of the passengers were saved.
The following brief sketch is from the Macon Telegraph: ,
Yesterday a traveling man sold some
thing to a person in Fitzgerald, ‘and took his
$50.00 note in settlement. He then offered
the note to us for $40.00. The note. was
good and would have been paid. but If we
had bought it, the money would have gone to
anothsr state.
A man from down about Waycross ap
plied to us today for a loan, and we could
have gotten a stiff rate of interest, but the
money would have gone entirely beyond vur
territory. We declined both of these propc:
sitions for the reason that we believe in the
conservation of our funds.
We endeavor to save money to lend in the
territory from which we get our deposits,
and thereby we know that we are a very
useful institution.

FITZGCERALD, BEN HILL COUNTY GEORGIA, APRIL 16, 1912.
| More than 1.500 persons, it is feared, sank to death early yesterday,
‘when within four hours after she crashed into an iceberg, the mammoth
‘White Star Line steamer Titantic, bound from Liverpool to New York, on
her maiden voyage, went to the bottom off the New Foundland banks.
Of the approximately 2200 persons on board the giganic steamer, some
of world-wide prominence, only 675 are known to have been saved. The
'White Star Line offices in New York, while keeping up hope to the last,
were free to admit there there had been “horrible loss of life.
Accepting the early estimates of the fatality list as accurate, the
disaster is the greatest in the marine history of the world. Nearest ap
proaching it in magnitude were the disasters to the Atlantic in 1873,
when 575 lives were lost, and to the La Bourgogne in 1898, with a fataliy
list of 571. ,
Should it prove that other liners, notably the Allen Liner’s Par
isian and Virginia, known to have been i the vicinity of the Titanic
early yesterday, had picked up other of her passengers, the extent of the
calamity would be greatly reduced. This hope still remains.

Saturday, April 20th.
A city's growth depends largely upon the peace, health and
happiness of citizens. :
In order to rid the city of mosquitos we have named next
Saturday, April 20th, as “MOSQUITO DAY,” and will offer a
prize of $lO.OO and a second prize of $5.00 to the boy under
18 years of age that on the day named gathers the largest pile
of empty tin cans or boxes from vacant lots, alleys or streets,
. placing same in piles on lots convenient for the city's wagons.
In reporting to the Inspector, give the number of cans or boxes
in piles, and also make a note of any holes or low places breed
ing mosquitos. We will haye a better or cleaner city in this
way, and we desire the co-operation of our boys. In filing your
report, also note any breeding places for flies,
