| Chat With My Many Frnends‘
I The way to get the best there is
'in people, is to give them your best. 1
| Home is where mother lives. And
!whether you be prince or peasant,‘
| one of the sweetest spots on earth is
lthe abode of your mother.
No matter what a girl's accom
plishments may be, her education
is incomplete if she has not some
knowledge of bake-ology. boil-ology,
roast-ology, stitch-ology, mend-ology,
and science of house-keeping. Even
if she should never be required to
do the work herself, she ought to
know whether it was done in a prop
| er manner.
One reason why so many girls and
| boys, men and women, too, are un
interesting, is because they try so
hard to be like somebody else rather
than be content to remain himself
or herself in life. In nature you
|don’t see an oak posing as a willow,
|or a black duck as a yellow leg, or
a horse as a cow, or a lily as a rose,
lor alilac as a peony, or a dog as a
|cat. Be natural and you'll be all
right.
It is wicked to loaf. Every man
is created for a purpose and he has
no right to shirk that responsibility.
If you have friends or money, that
simply increases your responsibility.
’No man has a right to leaf. Noth
|ing can be more humilitating to a
parent than to know that his son is
,a confirmed loafer—a mere blank—
absorbing his living from the toil of
other hands and creating nothing.

Dr. Adams Entertains
Stewarts of ‘ Central Methodist
Church.
Business and pleasure were hap
pily united at the home of Mr. P. M.
Adams on May 6th at the regular
meeting of the boards of Stewarts
of the Central Methodist Church,
} where hospitality performed the cer
emony of the invitation of Dr. J. M
Adams. Since the social feature
has been added to the board meet
ings the Slewarts look forward to
their coming todether with more
than usual interest, and in no case
more so than in this where the
worthy treasurer was the the host,
iassisted by his charming sister, Miss
Rosa Mae.
The meeting was opened by Vice-
President Dr. C. A. Holtzendorf.
Rev. Guyton Fisher lead the devo
tions, after which the business in
terests of the church were taken up
and Ihoroughly cared for.
After this profitable session lovely
refreshments were served by Miss
Rosa Mae Adams. assisted by Miss
Dovie Blair and Mrs. Guyton Fisher.
If it is true that that the way to
a man’s heart is via his mouth, cer
tainly every heart was touched by
the dainty menu, consisting’ of
chicken salad, pickles, cheese, sand
wiches, salted almonds, ice tea,
mints, ice cream decorated with
Maraschino cherries, lilly cakes,
chocolate wafers, and finally cigars,
with solid comfort wrappers. The
board unanimously decided that it
]had a treasure in its treasurer, and
FRED J. CLARK
that Miss Adams was a charming
hostess.
Those present were E. K. Farmer,
Dr. C. A. Holtzendorf, J. E. Turner,
R. J. Prentiss, H. M. Warren, S. G.
Pryor, J. H. Goodman, R. E. Lee, C.
A. Wheeler, Dr. J. M. Adams and
Rev. Guyton Fisher.
The next meeting at Mr. LA.
Cardwell’s,
Route ONE.
The heaviest rain “I think” for
‘years fell last Sunday night, which
‘seemed to be a general big rain, and
| the damages of that “one” rain alone
ito the farmers and the farming in
‘terests of Ben Hill county would
run up into the thousands of dollars.
‘lt seems that our farmers are up
against a serious proposition, or it
is against us and has been all this
year. : ;
~ Our Sunday School at this place
is in a flourishing condition. We
ihawe a few faithful workers who are
‘pushing it to the front. We meet
every Sunday afterncon at 3 o’clock,
land everybody is invited to come
out and help us on with the gdood
work.

Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Bond and little
son have returned to their home in
Chauncey after spending several
days very pleasantly with their pa

We regret to say Miss Emma Bat

few days with chills and fever. We
hope to see her out real soon.

Suicide Epidemic At
Fort McPherson.
Atlanta Georgia, May 10.-
A suicide epidemic, or some
thing very like it, has broken out
among the soldieis of the Seven
teenth regiment, U. S. infantry,
at Fort McPherson, this city.
Three privates have attempted
their lives by drinking carbolic
acid within less tnan three weeks,
Two of them succeeded, and the
third, Haydn Thurmond was sav
ed only by the timely accidental
intervention of a county police
officer,
There is no known dissatisfac
tion among the men at the post as
a whole, and their comrades ap
pear to beas much mystified as
the officers.
- The theory has been suggested
that the three men had entered
some kind of suicide pact or form
iled a suicide club, but this specu
lation is basea on nothing definite
beyond the fact that the men were
!a_l_l“in the same regiment and all
’adopted the same method of try
liing to end their lives.
