l How many ballots will be cast
in the presidential election in 12127
asks the Baltimore Sun.
Sometimes the study of dry figures

{tics at white heat and 1t wilt be
iinteresting to follow the Sun’s
‘story of the figures in former cani
gpaigns and its ecstimate of the
‘number of ballots the success!u!
candidate will have to command in
this one,
In 1888 there were 11,381,000,
ihe Sun says. Cleveland polled
5,680,233, while Harison got but
'5,440,216, Though Cleveland lind
a plurality of 98,107 of the popu
lar vote Harrison was elected, re
ceiving 233 electoral votes to
| Cleveland 168. In 1892 the totul
i was 12,044,000. Cleveland poling
5,556,918,Harri50n 5,176,1(8 Gen.
!Jnmes B. Weaver, the pouplist
!candidate, had 1,041,128 ballots
cast for him that year. The eiec
’mral vote was: Cleveland 277,
Harrison 145 and Weaver 22.
Tae exciting campaign of 1896
brought out a full vote, McKinley
poliing 7,104,779 to Bryan’s 6,502, -
925, getting a plorality of 601,-
54 and 271 electoral votes to
Bryan’s 167. In 1900 the total
rose to 13,965.000, McKinley and
Roosevelt polling 7.207,923 to
Bryau's 6,358,133, getting 292
electoral votes to Bryan’s 255.
Roosevelt, 1904, when he ran
for president ‘'in his own right”
received 7,523,486, while Parker’s
vote was only 5,079,911 —22; elec
toral votes for Roosevelt to 140
for Parker. Roosevelt’s plurality
was the largest ever recorded—
-2,545,515, Yet Taft in 1908 ac
tually polled 55,422 more votes
than Roosevelt did in 1904 7,678,-
908. Bryan received 6.409,104;
Taft’s plurality being 1,269,804.
Taft got 321 electoral votes; Bryan
162. Eugene V. Dets, the socialist
candidate, is credited with 420,-
793.
Government experts estimate
that the total vote this year will
reach 15,000,000 and may go be
yond that vast number. In that
case the candidate who gets a
popular majority will have to poll
more than 7,500,000. With 532
electoral votes this year, 267 will
be required to elect,
