Mr. Bowen's Contribution to The *City
. 1
Beautiful.
Twenty-five standards and fixtures of the White Way are
Mr. W. R. Bowan’s share of this feature of the ‘‘City Beautiful.”
When all of these fixtures are installed the entire length of Central
Avenue from the A. B. & A. depot to the court house will reflect
the enterprise and public spirit of this enterprising citizen. Be
sides these lights on Central Avenue, Mr. Bowen has had installed
several on Grant and Pine Streets.
S e
Water And Light Commission
The success of the ‘White Way” was made possible only through
the able and public spirited Water and Light commission. There is
not & Department of the city that has made more progress and used
its opportuaity to better advantage to the citizens at large than has
this department. Miles of water mains have been laid the past year
and the city has practically been covered with electric wires. A great
deal of this extension has been made with the net earnings of the plant
due to business like management of its affairs. Additional | improve
ments are planned by the commission for the year 1913, among them
an increased capacity and an increase n the minimam amount of water
for the consumer. The consumers of water will appreciate this latter
concession if presented to them as a New Year gift.
The last report of Secretary Wilson, as head of the Department
of Agriculture, which covers the achievements of sixteen years, the
time ““Tama Jim” has served as chief of this great branch of the gov
ernment service. is crowded with interesting facts and shows what a
marvelous growth the country has had since Mr. Wilson came to the
chiefship of the department. The dairy cow is one of the principal
producers of wealth on the farm and the value of her products in 1912
is estimated at about $830,000,000 an amount which exceeds the value
of the cotton lint and is nearly equal to the combined value of lint
and seed.
The lowly hen is another of the wonderful producers, it being
estimated that she laid during the year 1912, 1,700,000,000 dozen eggs
and if an egg is only worth a cent and three quarters it gives the tidy
sum of $350,000,000 and if this is added to the value of the fowls
raised, the products of the poultry industry on farms amounts to about
$570,000,000. This nearly equals the value of the wheat crop.
The animals sold from the farm and the animals slaughtered on
it together number about 111,000,000 and the farm value of these
apimals is estimated at $1,930,000,000. .
Most productive of all agricultural years in this country has been
1912, declares the report, The earth has produced its greatest an
nual dividend. The sun and the ran and the fertility of the soil paid
no heed to human controversies, but kept on working 1n cooperation
with the farmers’ efforts to utilize them, The reward is a high gen
ersl level of production. The man behind the plow has filled the Na
tion’s larder, crammed the storehouses, and will send liberal supplies
to foreign countries.—Washington Letter.
Mayor Cook and His
Progressive Administration.
Mayor Cook and his progressive council for 1912
present to the citizens of Fitzgerald for their Chrismas
present paved streets, tiled sidewalks and a business dis
trict, second to none in the state. The 1912 city admin
istration will go into history with more permanent public
improvements to their credit than any previous set of our
city officials. Through the co-operation of the largest tax
payers in the city, a village in appearance, Fitzgerald has
in one year moved up among the class of modern cities
and the coming year will bring to the resident portion of
the city what the business section received in 1912 better
streets and permanent sidewalks. Mayor Cook has the
ambition, shared by most of the council, to make Fitzger
ald the “City Beautiful” and expects to have the work so
far along when his term expires that whoever may be his
successor, to continuance and completion will be assured’
With these prospects of progress and development
in store, Fitzgerald may well have a merry Christmas and
feel assured of the continuance of prosperity in 1913. We
congratulate the Mayor and Council for their successes, we
congratulate the citizens of Fitzgerald upon their selection
and trust that the new members of the council will give
the Mayor and the City the same honest efforts and co-op
eration that the retiring ward aldermen did in 1912.

Xmas Presents for
Atlanta Prisoners
Atlanta, Dec. 22.—The Atlanta
and Fulton county authorities
have arranged one of the neatest
Christmas presents you ever saw
for each and every one of the
guests of the city and county this
year whose presence as guests of
the authorities 1s due to their
carrying of concealed pistols.
Each guest, including those
who still come in, will be pre
sented with a special present. It
will be in the form of jewelry.
There will be for each a hand
some chain, with a pretty bangle
on the end of it, in the form of a
sphere, weighing about sixteen
pounds and guaranteed eighteen
karat pig-iron.
Firmly believng in the princi
pal that all men are equal in the
eyes of the law, the police court
judge and the grand jury will
make no distinction between
whites and blacks. If he isa
““pistol toter’’ and gets caught,
he immediately qualifies to re
ceive the handsome ball and
chain. Several touching presen-
tations have already been made,
and "several pistol toters, white
and black, who had expected to
spend Christmas with their
friends, are having their Christ
mas dinner instead at the expense
of the state.
