Atlanta Savant Dissects
Xmas Celebration
Atlanta, Dec. 23.—Prof. Wm.
J. Cole, the aged Atlanta savant
and archeologist, who has jusfl
returned from making notable
excavations in Greece, has taken
the queer notion of subjecting
the Christmas celebration of his
fellow-Atlantians to a scientific
dissection, and has found three
separate basic principles under-l
lying the holiday activities of all
classes: I
The first is the Christian relig- |
ion. l
The second is aleoholic intoxi
cation.
l ‘The third is the discharge of
gunpowder and other explosives.
l The professor argues that all
giving, all Charity and all the
\activities centering around the
Santa JClaus legend must class
I under Christian religious activity
'and typify the Savior who was
himself the Great Gift to man
kind. All church services, Sun
day school festivities naturally
lcome under the same heading.
Under the second general head
‘ing of ‘‘alcoholic intoxication,”’
the professor classifies not mere
ly the drunkard on the street,
but all egg-nogg parties, all social
gatherings, all club dinners, all
parlors where the wine flows gen
erously at Yuletide. The profes
’sor takes a purely philosophic'
‘view, and while admitting thatl
| wetting drunk is unchristian, ob
serves that many good Christians
get drunk, and remarks that an
artificially produced intoxication
has been a part of most festivi
ties and celebrations since thel
worid began. He cites Noah as
precedent.
' The third classification, the
noisy discharge of explosives, is
self-explanatory as to its inclu
siveness, but why such means
should be used in a Christian
’community like Atlanta to cele
‘ brate the advent of the Prince of
Peace, the Holy Babe, is almost
beyond the learned savant’s com
prehension. The custom, he says,
is of a barbaric and unchristian
origin, but how it crept into thei
Christmas tide, he is unable toJ
say- ‘

Against Dime Novels
Germany Is Warring
Berlin; Dee. 22.—The proposed
law against dime novels and sensa
tional literature has been received
with favor by the majority of the
federated states of Germany. It
probably will be submitted to the
federal council during the present
session of parliament. :
The measure will provide heavy
penalization for the display and
sale of this kind of literature, as
well as for the confiscation of all}
copies. The existing legislation 1n
‘Germany affects only those publi
;cations which are offensive moral- l
ly and rehigiously.
