THF 1 FADFR-FNTFRPRISF. FRIDAY DECEMREFR. 27 1919
MR. AND MRS. ELGEN EN
TERTAIN FOR MR. DON
ALDSON.
Mr. and Mrs. Riley Elgen en

informal reception yesterday
morning at their apartments in
the Holtzendorf Flats, the affair
being in honor of their brother,
Mr. Thomas R. Donaldson, of
Atlanta.
The rooms were elaborately
decorated with Christmas colors,
and in one corner of the living
room was a beautifully appoint
ed Christmas tree. Poinsettas
were also used extensively in the
decorations.
Mr. and Mrs. Elgen were as
stel by their morth2e, Mrs. Ha
nnah Donaldson. They received
between the hours of 10:30 and
12:30, and the guests included:
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas M. Griffin,
Mr. and Mrs. James L. McCarty,
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Dickey,
Dr. and Mrs. C. A. Holtzendorf,
Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Ricker, Mrs.
Lon Dickey, Misses Hattie Tay
lor, Mildred Wooten, Fannie

The delicious refreshments con
sisted of hot coffee, fruit cake
and other delicacies appropriate
for the season. ’
Blease Pardons 79,
- Including Slavers
On Christmas Eve
Columbia, S. C. Dec. 24. —Gov
ernor Blease today gave Christmas
presents in the nature of pardons
or paroles to 79 inmates of the
state penitentiary and today the
frée men are pouring through the
doors of the prison.
The crimes against the men
range all the way from first degree
murder down to minor offenses.
From the Daily Bulletin
An Qutrage That
‘ Breeds Trouble
Tuesday night some miscreants
perhaps filled with bad liquor en
tered the colored church on the
road to Ocilla and began a fuli
sade on the assembled negroes
holding their Christmas festivi
ties. One negro was seriously
wounded. It is a menace tothe
peace of the community to have
some irresponsible fellows create
race hatred b y disturbing a
peacefully assembled gathering
of men, women and children and
in their unbridled lust for blood
jeopardize the good feeling that
exists between our colored labor
add the planters of the commun
ity. A reward has been offered
by a leading citizen and it is to
be hoped that the suspects will
be brought to trial.
A similar act again was nar
rowly avoided Wednesday night
by the appearance on the scen‘e*
of Sheriff Norris and Mr. R.
V. Handley. The parties at this
latter assault are well known
citizens of Irwin County and the
next Grand Jury is likely to look
after their case. Unless the law
abiding citizens will protect their
negro laborers in their lawful
rights it will be a serious handi
cap in keeping farm labor on the
farm.
Six Months Each,
Two negroes, Sam McLain and
Charley Brown, plead guilty be
fore Judge Wall this morning, to
charges of pistol toting and lar
ceny, respectively, and each re-‘
ceived a sentence of six months
on the gang. i ‘
