Berlin, Sep. 22, 1:30 p. m.—Although the retreating Russian
army east and south east of Vilna is destroying the railway tracks and
bridges and are dynamiting chasmes in the Highways, as they fall
back, the pursuit by Teutonic forces continues without any serious
check under the command of Field Marshal Von Mackenson. ‘

Sofia, Sep. 22, 1:30 p. m.-—Bulgaria is on the brink of entering
the war on the side of the Teuton allies and the people generally be
lieve hostilities are imminent. The Military authorities have taken
possession of all railways an'® ary traffic has been suspended.

Muscovite Retreat Apparently at Most
Critical Juncture; Misgivings
In England |
London, Sept. 21.—The German encircling movement against
the Russian army which evacuated Vilna has tightened and with
the retreating forces virtually without "rail communication, their
retreat seems to have reached the most critical juncture.
There is increasing misgiving in England with regard to the
outcome of the maneuver.
The latest Berlin official communication shows important ad
vances by von Hindenburg’s right wing as well as progress by
Prince Leopold of Bavaria on the center.

Berlin, Sep. 21— The official announcement from the war office
under date of September 20, contains the following: ‘
“West of St, Quentin a British aeroplate was shot down by a
German aviator. The British pilot was killed and his observer was
captured.

London, Sep 21—The British steamer Linkmoor, 4,048 tons gross
built last year and owned in Shields, has been sunk. Her crew was
landed. .

Colliery. Rescue Work Very Difficult
Nuneaton, England, Sep. 21—Four hundred miners were entomb
ed by an explosion in the Exhall colliery.
Fire followed the explosion making the rescue work dificult.
DVINSK TO FALL TO'GERMAN ASSAULTS
FALL APPEARS CERTAIN
Petrograd, Sept. 21— German seige guns are now battering away
at the Dvinsk fortress.
After a desperate resistance by the Russian forces to the west of
the Dvina river, the Germans have succeeded in bringing up their
42-centimeter guus and GGerman areoplanes are fl;ing over the city,
dropping bombs and directing the artillery fire.
According to the latest reports received, the city is burning in
several places. .
Before the German bombardment opened the greater part of the
civilians left the city. :
The War Office here admits that the situation there is critical.

Cars Filled With Passengers Plunge Into Abys

New York, Sep. 22, 1:30 p. m.—The new subway being construct
ed on seventh Avenue and collapsed hetween 24th and 25th street
this morning tollowing an explosion. Three street cars filled with
psssengers on their way to work plunged down into the chasme eans--
ing iv 18 believed great loss of life. A short time after the disaster
occurred fire chief Kenlon estimated the dead would number betweer: .
twenty five and thirty persons. Seven bodies have been recovered and:
fifty taken out alive but injured according to police statements.
