His Honor, the Mayor, did not find
single case on docket yesterday mornin;
that could yield ov* n a five dollar kill to
ward paying for that snhoolhouav which
is under contract tolx» built in the south
ern portion of the city. If the poopl
continue to l*e so law-abiding the city
treasury will suffer, and this depart
of t*ie Tki.kokai'H ani> Mesmknubb will
have to furnish forago for its patrol
from altogether new pastures. We d
light in seeing the people orderly, and
sober and lavf-nbiding, but such a line of
morals, established as a permanency,
would play the douce with tins city do
partmont of the best paper the wed
ever saw.

Mrs. Dukes, the wife of Nathan Duke*
who was killed by C. Don Levy last Kit

learn the exact nature of the charge, but
eupposo it was either tvs principal in the
second degree or accessory to the crime*
of murder. The arrest was made too

New Rooks.
Messrs. J. W. Burke A Co. have just
received a largo number of new liookn,
among which are **The Household of
Bouverie" and •’Miriam Montfort," both
l»y a Southern lsdy. The first named of
those l*ooks was first published in lHfiO,
and had such a run as few other Ameri
can books ever had. It was admitted to
bo great in all the elements necessary to
make it a great work of fictftra, and in a
short while after its appearance there was
not a copy to be bad. It is stated os a
fact that as high as twenty-five dollnrs
has boon offered for a copy of the hook;
but owing to the fact that the author tvss
a Southern lady, and tie* »ar coming on,
the book bad pnmsd out of print.
The appearanoq of a new novel by the
same author has revived the old interest
in her former work, and Messrs. D. Ap
pleton A Co., of New York, have found it
necessary to i^tue an entirely new edition
of the work. It is this edition which
Messrs. J. W. Burke A Co. have just re
ceived, ami which they advertise in
another column this morning. They
havo a largo invoice of both books.

The Grand Council met to-day in this
city as 'per announcement puMiahed in a
lat- j - -i jo of this paper.
From the ofi:ial reports of the officer*,
we learn that the ord-r is increasing in
number-, an-I influe&os—having already
orgmni/.'tl in the sliori spa**-* of nin.:
months al*out 115 councils, and being
sound financially, notwithstandin
had to build itself up from ground. Much
important legislation has been enacted
at tho present session, and every neces-
-ary provision made to extend the older.
An able lecturer hax bc*.*n selected and
put in the fi**ld; the organ of the order
strengthened and made more capable of
good work, and a judicious system for
deptiticp inaugurated. The work for the
ensuing year, under thia arrangement, is
put down at five hundred councils.
This order is purely a white man’s in
stitution, and So iihern in all its charac
teristic^. It has l*oth the pledge during
m**ml>ership and the pledge for life, in
tend, ng to unite under its bread wings
oh eqrnd terms all orders of Temperance,
whether they believe in the one or the
other.
