Wild Ponies of the Eastern
Shore*
The Baltimore American tells of a lit-
I tl«* district within ten miles of the eastern
I coast of Maryland, where wild ponies are
j t,. If -»-**n in abundance, nobody knowing
how they came there. There is a trndi-
| tion. however, that some great Virginia
gentleman was bringing over a pair of
Ipoakafrom England some two wirtgiii
' a: *. md that hi* ship wiu wro<tkcd off
A t»-igi:*- I ■ h. Tin* two jjonie wen
washedashoiw and were the prrkgenltors
•of the little animals that now feed.upon
,tlu* salt imirshes «f tile district. There
are now about five hundnd ponies in the
vicinity. Thoy divide themselves into
herds without regard to ownership, and
tw* U befd confines itself to a particular
range. Each herd is governed by a
male, whose authority is supreme. In
(ui'i&cr times he fought his way up to j
the ion. of patriarch by thr.idi- j
mg all his rivals, sometimor driving |
them into the sea, where they were
drowned. The great day an the island
is *’pcnningday,** although of late it has
lost some of its holiday attractions. Men
and beyn mount tame ponies and start
• nit to bring in the herds. They gallop to
| the pastufu grounds, and, after much
yelling, fast riding, and some little swear
ing, they manage to drive one of the herds
down to the shore. When the herds get
ritartod down the shore, the riders press
clop.- after, yelling and whooping, and
there u a livriy chose until the avenue
that leads to the pen is reached. Here
a crowd of men are standing, and they
turn the head of the flying column into
the iM|uai%. Some of the ponies suspect
treachery and run into the water, but the
rulers dash after them, and soon the whole
herd is fbrcod into the pen.
