The Mayor's Court.
Owing to the illness of Mayor Huff and
the absence from th© city of Alderman
J. W. Burk--, Alderman Cornell found
I'ler the necessity of wearin
ju<CciaI robes (metaphorically speak
ing) yesterday morning.
There were but two names on the
docket and they were Pleas. Henry and
Gwrgej Devereux. Both were booked
for stealing. Pleas. Henry is the most
perfect* specimen of embryo mulatto thief
Macon ever had to a-ntend with. He is
not more than fourteen years old, and jet
he takes to stealing as naturally as an
“amendment” takes to politics. He
would steal a meeting-house if ho could
only bike it away. He will steal a dog,
or a gun, or clothing, or meat, or any
thing else that ho can git his hands on.
and when he cannot, conveniently forage
on tho tneiny, lie proceeds to deplete his
mothers wardrobe. He would rather steal
hia break fast any timo than go to the table
and <-at it, feeling that ho is welcome to it.
He would steal the chew of toboocoout of
his own mouth and hide it, if he thought
it woul^ give his teeth any trouble. In
fact, the principal enjoyment of hi* lony-
ant young nature is in stealing. He is
not happy, unless ho can steal. lie never
goes to (boa contented unless he ha* stolen
something during the day, and the beau
ty of it all is the remarkable simplicity
with which he always owns up. He never
denies a theft. He is by* far too honest a
hid for that. He can steal without any
oompuhetions of conscience, but his hon-
a* this arises from the fact that
m men are drawing upon their
□ers here, through the Express
my, instead of allowing maturing
to be met through the usual safe
and convenient business cuannels. The
course thus adopted by the West would
soon relieve the city of all the currency
here, and dealers would be left utterly
powerless to move the cotton crop, which ning at 8| o’clock,
is now pouring in. Several gentlemen ’
gave their ideas about the necessity that
exist* for checking this evil, and. also, as
to the best means to be adopted.
Mr. C. A. Nutting introduced the fol-
lowingresolution, which was unanimously
adopted:
Resolved, That a committee of five be
appointed by the Chairman, whose duty

it shall be to draw and present a series of
resolutions touching and covering the de
mand made upon oar mercantile commu
nity to r mit currency for their maturing
paper, tne committee to report at four
o'clock p. m. on Monday next.
The committee consists of Messrs. C.
A. Nutting, J. W. Truman, W. C. Single-
ton, S. T. Coleman and W. R. Rogers.
The committee will meet at the City
Bank, at 9 o'clock Monday morning.
The merchants of Macon generally,
whether members of the Board of Trade
or not, are requested to meet at the
Board and join in the consideration
this important question.
The Arrest of Don Levy.
Tho impression entertained * by some
that Cornelius Don Levy, who killed his
step-father, Nathan Dukes, on the night
of the 3d inst., was somewhere around
the city, and would, at his convenience,
give himself up, was an erroneous one,
as Don Levey has been doing his best
make his escape. The following dispatch
to the Telegraph and Messenger, gives
information of his arrest in Montgomery,
Alabama:
Montgomery, Ala., October II.
Editors Telegraph and Messenger : Don
Levy was arrested here to-day. He has
been here two days, and sent a dispatch
to his mother for money. The authori
ties telegraphed to have him arrested,
and ho was spotted and put into jail to
await a requisition from Macon.
w. w. s.
We had given the young man credit
for more shrewdness than is manifested
in his conduct. The commonest intelli
gence ought to have convinced him that
any telegraphic communication with his
mother would most certainly lead to
discovery of his whereabouts, yet he sent
such communication, and the consequence
he is in the hands of the officers of
justice, and immediate steps will be ta”
ken to bring him back to Macon for trial.

We invite attention to the advertisement
of this one of the largest and best known
wholesale and retail hardware* establish
in exits in the State. Air. John C. Curd, the
resident partner, is a gentleman of su
perior business qualifications, and thor
oughly versed in all tho details of the
iron and cutlery trade. His selections of
table and pocket cutlery are most ad
mirable, and imported directly from
Sheffield, Birmingham and other foreign
marts. So also their Swede’s iron comes
immediately from the rolling mills of
Sweden, and all American goods from tho
manufacturers themselves. Possessed of
amplo capital and much experience, and
assisted by competent salesmen who
spare no pains to please their customers,
tho trade of this house is very extensive,
and they can offer peculiar facilities to

Put/.rl ft Hon.
Attention is called to the advertise
ment of the New York Grocery of Messrs.
Putrel & Son, who are now receiving
their winter stock of goods in their line.
Their snug little store is packed from
floor to ceiling with fresh and fine groce
ries. In the item of tea alone, they ap
pear to have the product of half a dozen
Chinese tea orchards, and the question is
what are they going to do with it ? They
liave enough to supply half the old maids
in the world the. balance of their lives.
They have thirty-five different kinds of
canned fruits, and almost as many of
canned fish and ujpats. Besides these,
they keep a full line of family groceries,
and make a specialty of German groce
ries, which they keep in stock all the
time. In cigars and tobacco they have
good stocks of as good as the best. In
the line of liquor their “Century Whisky”
has few equals and no superiors. In fact,
their entire stock is full, fresh, fine and
fancy, and they propose selling them
cheap.
A WarU far the ■•rwenien.
There are quite a number of gentle-
on now in the city who have brought
their horses here to be trained for the
fair. Several stables are here, and the
track is generally occupied by them. The
only time in which this training can be
done is in the forenoon. Those who have
race horses here wish to exercise them
early in the morning. Trotting can be
exercised at other times in the forenoon.
These gentlemen, however, are frequently
interrupted by the presence of carriages
and buggies on the track, as it is impos
sible to speed a horse, under such circum
stances. These gentlemen suggest that
tho people be requested to allow them
entire control of the track during the
forenoon. The public can have it the
entire afternoon, and the horsemen will
thus have plenty of time to do their train
ing without interruption.
