[Communicated.] Lotteries Our attention has been especially called to the consideration of the subject of lotteries by seeing a great many of our dtixens, and especially our young men, invent their money in an enterprise inau gurated for the ostensible purpose of crea ting a fund to erect a great library in XjouisvilUv Kentucky. To clothe this scheme with an air of respoctability, an x-Govornor** name is placed at the head weeon of it. We have no right to question, neither lo we impugn the fairness with which tins enterprise is conducted. Take for granted that this dm wing is conducted it purports to b»*. Sn m in ing up the whole matter.it resolves itself into this: That tho managers of this scheme propose to distribute in money to tho*e who invest in the enter- e Sl.Mlfr.OfiO, and the association is to receive for tho amount they distribute the sum of $3,000,000, paid to them in h by tho*- who purchase a ticket to »*ontribute to this lottery. To confine the entire nu«*xtion down to* a narrow cpuiposs, and to view it in a strict busi- 1 light, then* arc exactly two chances he against those who invest in this lottery receiving anything foi it in re turn. A former drawing of this lottery withdrew quite a large sum of money from this city without returning anything therefor. And now again this glittering bauble is presented to our people for an investment, holding up os an inducement a capital prixe of a quarter of a million of dollars. The managers hoping, hy this shining attraction, to cover up the doficitand false foundation upon which the entire edifice rest*, which is, that those who have pur chased ft ticket have placed two dollars in tho hands of a company of men who, provided all things an* fairly conducted, they, the company, promise only to dis tribute to their stockholders one dollar for every two that is placed in their hand*. Ouryoung men full of the natural buoy ancy of hope, and led on by the ever false and malignant star called lurk, an'apt to be caught in this glittering snan». We should rend asunder this thin veil and show the figure in its naked unfairness. Our leg- irdat un*. with a firm hand and an unal terable det iriuiiiation. should prevent by penal statute the sale of any lottery tick et, or any scheme of like kind in this State. A State should protect her citizens fnun the v-mptution of any enterprise for which they do not receive a proper consideration for their money. The spirit of simulation, of vain and fruit- !«•*> hopes that thcoc schemes engender are productive of gTeat evil. Ernest had been a very great sufferer for nearly twenty years. She bore her long sickness with Christian submission to the will of Him who orders all things forgood to them that love Him. Her faith in the atonement made by Christ stronger than death, and enabled her not only to be calm and resigned, but. even in the presence of the dread messenger, to welcome his coming. When dying- »h e bl*a*ed lier dear ones, and l»ade them not to weep for her—the separation would be short, the reunion joyous. Near the last, she said she felt very near tolGod. almost in his imme diate presence, and often exclaimed, *‘0h! that I could flyawayandbeat rest.” Thus triumphant ly she haa left us, iKrrer doubting her accept ance with God, or His ability and willingness to save her.
