Prices of Admission.
Elsewhere in tnia issue trill bo found
the prices of admission to the Fair Ground,
together with other rules and regulations
which will .be observed during the Fair;
also, the places in the city where tickets
can be procured.
e a m • »
A Iff for Xriiipliln.
The Knights of Pythias lodges of this
city. also the different Maaonic and Odd
Fellows lodges hare contributed twenty-
fire dollars each to their suffering breth
ren in Memphis. This will add about
one hundred and illty dollars to what has
already been sent from this city.
For the Hlbb UUplay.
A panther has, for a long time, been
prowling about the locality known as
Cold Neck, in the Warrior District, and
Jim Ilnnnicutt says he is going to catch
him and add him to the Bibb county dis
play at the Fair. It will be a novel con
tribution, but none the less highly ap
preciated! besides, it is a Bibb connty
production and entitled to lie entered.
New f,r»rrry Honor.
Attention is called to the advertise
ment of Messrs. J. G. Wilburn A Co..who
hare opened a large and fresh stock of
groceries on Cherry street..next to Greer,
Lake A Co's. Mr. Wilburn is a young
gentleman of fine business intelligence
and experience and is well known to the
peopte of Macon. He has a first-rate line
of family groceries, and we hope to see
him do a good trade.
Rlrvators.
Mr. J. F. Hair, of Louisville, Ken
tucky, has just completed the erection of
two very superior elevators in Jones A
Baxter's not building on the corner of
Cbcrr r street and Cotton avenue. These
elevators possess groat power and yet
movo with ease and celerity, Mr. Hair
will remain in the city during the cornier?
week, and invites an examination of Ms
machines. Should any of the Macon
merchants desire an elevator, their orders
will have prompt attention if left at the
store of Jones A Baxter. Mr. Hair will
erect machines to bo run by either >team,
home or hand power.
A Fine 5*!nnn.
Wc saw at Messrs. Guilford, Wood A
Co.*a yesterday a magnificent Checkering
concert grand Piano, manufactured ex
pressly for Brown's Hotel in this city.
The instrument is ono of the finest made
by that celebrated manufactory, and its
tone would fairly enchant a Kubenstoin
or any other pianist. It is elegantly
cased in rosewood with hdhvy carved
logs, and is polish oil until any surface is
equal to a mirrow. It will be quite an
ornament to Brown's Hotel.
Messrs. Guilford, Wood A Co. received
eight Katey organs yesterday, which are
sent out for exhibition at the fair. They
will also have four different styles of
Checkering, and two of thPir own pianos
on exhibition.
The Mayor's Court.
Three dusky cuaheeaes were up before
His nonor yesterday morning upon the
romantic charge of stealing. Their
names were Amanda Johnson, Carrie
Brown and Octavia Alien. They looked
upon the apples that were red, and their
souls did long for them, and, being in
their normal impecunious condition, they
eould not buy, so they Stole- The old
passion for apples, tim manifested by
Eve in EdJn, has not yet perished, and
the sex will have them by fair means
foul. The jKosocntor in this case failed
to make his appearance, and their
were continued until to-morrow. * Each of
the three prisoners gave a .-solemn prom
ise to be promptly on band at the ap
pointed hour, and accordingly were dis
missed for the present.
We lldn'i know.
And we want it so understood. We hare
said so a thousand times within the past
week, and we take this occasion to reiter
ate it. It is useless to ask any more
questions a) out it, because we say we
don’t know when it is going to rain. It
may rain next week, or neit month or
next year; or it may not It may rain
before this paper reaches the city sub
scribers this* morning. It may not rain
before the 4th of July. We don't know.
We think, however, that it will rain again.
In all the history of the world there has
never been but one long dry spell that
was not followed by an abundance of
rain. Hence, while we don’t ku>w when
it is going to rain, we are hoooful that it
will rain sometime or other.
We think we can account for the pres
ent dry spell. The public will bear in
mind that during the spring and summer
months of the present y»*ar, it rained
much oftener tc&n it didn’t rain. In
fact we had wet spell- so close to each
other Unit they almost lapped over. So
much rain must haw required extraor
dinary exertions on the part of old Aqua
rius, and, we think, in going »o often to
the well, his pitcher cot broken, and he
is now lying up waiting for a new pitcher
to be made, before he can go to handing
water around again. We don’t know
whether the conjecture is a good one or
not. but old I'robs is welcome to tele
graph it if he wants to.
But we don’t know when it is going to
rain.
in Ma
ting jf‘i1.1, and one that is
material interest to t*very merchant
came up before Judge Weems,
of the County Conrt, two or three days
ago, as follows:
A mercantile firm brought suit against
a ctiatoDii'r for the amount of a bill of
Roods sold some time ago.- The goods
WPre wch as ate sold by weight and
measure. The counsel for the defense
made the point that the bill oould not be
collected, because the weights and m*
«n*e used by the merchant wen? not le
gal. He cited two sections of the code,
one of which makes it the duty of Onii-
nari*- to procure a marking instrument,
seal or .tamp, for the purpose of markin;
all weights and measures which do not
fall below the established standard. The
other section is as follows :
“All persons engaged in selling by
weights and measures shall apply to the
Ordinaries of their respective counties,
and have their weights and measures so
marked, and in default thereof, stall not
collect any account, note nr ether writings,
the ammderafum if which is any commodity
told by their weights and measures."
The court was obliged to rule in accord
ance with the law, which is an old one
upon the statute books, tl ou -h the coun
sel afterward withdrew the point, having
obtained his end without using i\
The case, however, brings to the atten
tion of the Ordinary a very essential duty
which has heretofore been neglected, and
to the attention of the merchants a mat
ter so materially affecting their interests
that they cannot afford to neglect it. If
a man were unscrupulous enough to seek
to avoid the payment of an account solely
on the ground that the weights and
measuMs are not marked or stamped in
accordance with the terms of the law,
they cannot go into the Court-house to
collect such accounts.
Special Train, to the Fair.
All the railroads leading into Macon
have signified their intention to give
the people all possible facilities for get
ting to and from the fair.
The Central road .will run a special
train from Eatonton to Macon, and will
add passenger coaches to their freight
trains, thus giving the people facilities
outside their regular double daily passen
ger trains.
The Macon and Augusta road will ran
a special train in from Sparta every
morning and go out every evening.
The Southwestern rood will run a spe
cial train from Smithville every day during
the fair. •
The Macon and Brunswick will run a
special from HawkinsviUo which, in addi
tion to their double daily passenger trains,
will accommodate everybody along their
line.
A special train will run over the Mus
cogee road from Columbua every .lay.
The Macon and Western rood will run
a special from Griffin. leaving that place
At five o'clock in the morning.
All these trains will reach Macon at
from eight to nine o’clock every morning,
and will leave at from five to six in the
evening—thus permitting people to some
in and spend the day without the neces
sity of remaining over night.
A Charming Entertainment.
Thu parlor concert at the residence of
Mr. S. Boykin. Friday night, in aid of
the Presbyterian parsonage fund, was
one of rare merit, and proved a most en
joyable occasion. The programme was
made up with great taste and tact, and
blended vocal and instrumental music in
most judicious proportion—which un
fortunately is not often the case. Wo
ball net i»rU»liuiw aa to the “ grown
folks” who took part, though some of
the sweetest and most cultivated voices
in Macon were heard; but a duett by
Master Price—son of Dr. J. R. Price
—and Miss - Pet” Nisbetr-daughter
of Jaa. T. Nisbet, Esq.—deserves and
shall have special commendation. It
was given with a ipirit and correctness
very rarely heard in such youthful vocal
ists. A children's chorus, in which some
of the singers were not more than four or
five years of age, was also a prominent
and delightful feature, and was heartily
encored. Summed up, ‘the concert was
decidedly successful, and ono of the
pleasantest breaks in the dull monotony
of these stagnant times that, could have
liecn devised.
