Kuh, in Rutland dis trict, were destroyed by fire last Wednes day. The fire originated in the kitchen, but from what cause ia unknown. Thornton, the absconding cotton weigher at the warehouse of Simp son A Johnson, of Knfaubi. was arrested at Meridian, Miss., and brought back to Kufsula last Saturday night. He had obtained 915,000 Oft forged cotton receipt*. We did not hear whether or not any of the money was recovered. Hninlrltfe. A difficulty occurred Saturday night, between some negroes at station U on the Southwestern mad. in which Nelson Wilson shot and killed another negro, whose name ws could not ascertain. Cornelius Don Levy, charged with the murder of hi* step-father, Nathan Duke*, was brought bofore Justices Sprins and Coxe for preliminary examination yesta?r- day morning. Mr. Werling, a princiy<el witness for the Suite, being unable to at tend, in consequence of the wound he re ceived at the time of tho killing of Dukes, the State asked n.postpone until Saturday, which was agreed to. The State ia represented by Col. C. B. Wooten, and the defense by Cots. Whit tle, Weems and Lanier. Another F.*c»pr from the Chain Gan*. Brother Cordell appear* to bo some what unfortunate in hi* detention of the chain gang prisoner* committed to his core. Evidently he employs insufficient guard, or else those he does employ are careless in tho dfadiargo of their duty. Allen Outler, convicted of larceny from the house, clipped his chain Sunday night, mode his escape and is still at large. This make's ten or a dozen who have escaped, only two of whom, ns far as we can remember, have been recap tured and returned. The Foili»i> Court. Willis Lowe and Julius Lowe, both col ored. were before Judge Weems yester day on the charge f gambling on Sun day. They were cdhvicted and fined twenty dollars each, or three months in the chain-gang. Some white men an* implicated in thia same ca*c: but their cases were continued until the regular term of the court. Charity Wo.k1 was up for intorlusive- neea. The only convicting testimony against her was that of her husband, which was ruled out and the case dis missed. C hicken Thief Xllletf. Desperate Encounter With a Wild Cat. It was known to mod person- in the city tbit Haven* was the owner of a very handsome specimen of the wild cat. He could handle it with impunity, and it never showed any fight until Sunday afternoon.
