The nearer the ti
ening of the fair the ha
ct of thing* the park
will nearly if not quite all be com- !
rted to-day. Very little remained yester
day for the carpenters to doon the new exhi
bition hall, and the painters were at work
to the outside and a battalion of white-
nuhen on the inside. The agent of the
Pairl»snks and the Howe scales cornea-
lies are on the ground with goods enough
n their line to fill the whole of the first
dory of this building. _ Each company
has half the floor, and even then their
arge hay scales hare to be erected on
‘he outside of the building. Workmen,
-resterday, were engaged in laying a brick
foundation for each of the companies, to
The right of Floral Hall.
The chicken shew promise* to be a
moat unusually large and handsome one.
There is already a good show on the
ground, a large number of coops haring
arrived from Oneida county, New York,
and a still larger number having been
filled by Dr. Wilcox, of this county. The
latter has specimens of white, buff, black
n in and partridge Cochin cocks, which cer
tainly promise to be very hard to beat.
They are magnificent fowls.
Some machinery has arrived and is
I icing placed. Mr. Williagham is fixing
up to show one of hi* horse-powers. He
um erected a platform for the purpose,
iod has the machine in working order.
From now until the end of the week
will be a busy time on the ground. Many
exhibitors are already here, and are anx
ious to begin to put their" goods into po
rtion. Additional stock is arriving every
•lay, and visitors to the ground can see a
smart tittle “spirt” between fast trotters
lit almost any hour of the day. The track
is full ef horses nearly all the time,
The leaves are falling so rapidly that
it‘i* .difficult to keep the grounds looking
perfectly clean; but the Mayor ha* a
strong force of rakes at work, and will
have things looking a* dean as possible.

There is now at tho office of Mr. 11.
Wrigley a very handsome little boat*
which is intended to be exhibited at the
State Fair. The boat was built by Master
Ed. Irvine, clerk in J. W. Burke A Co/s
book store, and is a masterpiece of mech
anism for so young a mechanic, and one
wholly untutored except by tho prompt-
ing of a fine natural mechanical genius.
The boat is a side-wheeler, worked by an
ingenious lever arrangement resembling
the walking-beam of on engine, and the
whole is very handsomely painted. It Is
large enough to boar the weight of two
or tluve persons, and would look well if
permanently launched on the lake in the
Parle.

The Wilkinson county grand jury, in
making their presentments on Thursday,
paid the following compliment to the
Judge and Solicitor General:
In closing the duties of the present

in its various forms abroad in our land;

Honor, George F. Bartlett, we look to
the day not far distant when the criminal
court will become a terror to evil doers,
and tffiiuo, stop by step, recede from onr
land.
To J. W. Prestem, Solicitor General, we
tender our thanks for that courteous and
ever-roady manner in which we have
found him assisting u* in ferreting owt
the many cases of crime presented for
onr consideration.

Both of these gentlemen are veteran
mercliants anti thoroughly posted in all
the details of their calling. Few firms
th«* city or State are stronger financially,
or liave been more successful in their
business- career. The senior was for
many years engaged in trade at Clinton,
and is deservedly esteemed throughout
MitMid Georgia. His associate. Mr. Dun
lap, is ono of the four oklest merchants
in Macon, and a self-made uian of great
worth anti forco of character. He is one
of- the most active and efficient officers
connected with the approaching Fair, and
if Bibb county should bear away the prize
offered for the largest and best county
display, to him will as much of the credit
be due, as to any other single individual.
This firm has on hand an immense
stock of cutlery, tools and hardware gen
orally, together with wagon and carriage
findings, such as hubs, spokes, rims and
other material, in great abuntlance, and
hollow-ware and wooden ware enough al
most to stock the country. Their impor
tations of iron and steel also are very
heavy from abroad. As an evidence of
this, thoy have now a foreign order for
100.000 pounds of the best Swedes iron.
Their table and pocket cutlery comes
directly from the forges of the English
manufacturers. The trade of this house
is very extensive, both at wholesale and
retail. They are most fortunate, too, in
tho choice of their assistants. One of
these, Mr. J. H. Johnson, is a son of the
senior, and a capital chip of the old block.
As a salesman, he is active, courteous and
efficient. Of the other, George A. Smith,
who contributed so much to the success
of the lamented Wise, it is almost unnec
essary to speak. He is entirely au fait
in his line of business, and has no supe
rior among the young men of tho city.
It requires three commodious apartments
to accommodate the large stock of Messrs.
Johnson A Dunlap, and their supply of
agricultural implements, gins, plows, etc.,
is sufficient of itself to equip a respecta
ble store. Read their advertisement, to
be found elsewhere.
