For five months these detec* live have been quietly weaving their nets into which they were at length to enclose so many victims. Assuming aU sort* of characters and weaving every description of disguise, they have remorselessly pur* sued their work of discovering the men $ of the counterfeit into the _ 1 catch them, and expose'their dealings in toe spurious money. As pedlars, drummers, tobacco traders, stock buyers, farm labor ers, as themselves counterfeiters—in all these and numerous other characters—the men spread themselves over the territory to he watched and by every manusuvn* known to the skilled detective, adught te learn the secrets so sealoindy guarded, and to inveigle the unsuspecting into their toils. They found that there were a number of persons, acatterud through this section of country, engaged more or less in deal ing in counterfeits. None of the base money was printed in this region, but was brought from Ohio by one man, who. obtaining at different times ationt f 50.0U1 as represented by the counterfeit notes, would dispose of it in largeorKHia.il quan tities, as ho traveled slowly through Ken tucky and East Tennessee to Western North Carolina. He would sell it fora large discount and the. buyers would again dis *o*e of it for a profit, toothers, or would, themselves, pass it off to honest tradesmen or farmers, as genuine. The detectives say it was anrprUing to find so many “respectable" people concerned in the nefarious business, and many a poor merchant and country storekeeper ha* found to his great grief that nearly aT. the money bo dejH>nded open to replenish his stock was counterfeit, he having taken it in for purchases by hi* customers, some of whom knowingly poasod it on him, and many being themselves the unanspectin 4 victims of the counterfeiters. Finally, the traps being all set, and all arrangements made for springing them and enclosing the parties to be arrested, yesterday was chosen tu* the day on whieff the arrests were simultaneously to br made throughout the Eastern Districts of Tennessee and the Western District of North Carolina, Deputy Marshals in suf ficient number were appointed and from Asheville and Greensboro. N. C., mounted deputies were to serve the warrants on and effect the arrest of sixty-eight impli cated persons in the Western District of North Carolina. About twenty warrants were out for the East Tennessee District, In the entire work the detectives l»avt received the cordial support of tlw United States officials, and to District Attorney Andrews and Marslial Evans, of Ena Tennessee, ami District Attorney Luk and Marshal Douglass, of Western North Carolina, the detective* are indebted far assistance throughout their labors and up to the consummation of their work in the arrests, yesterday. Two mounted parties were to have left Asheville yesterday, and one mounted party was to proceed from Greensboro, to effect the arrest of those against whom warrants had been issued. Their success will not Is? known for a «lay or two. The officials of the Eastern District of East Tenncsso arrested ten uiem *•Q for as known, Three of those were in Knox ville and seven from the neighborhood of Carter’s Depot and Johnson's Station.
