Williams, a section mis ter on the Macon and Augusta Railroad, died sud'lenly of congest!re chill in Mil* ledgerille last Thursday. The Union and Recorder says : A NOTHXR lizo RaTTUMWASK KILLED.— Mr. B. I. Johnson, Using in this county near the Une of Washington, on Town creek, killed a rattlesnake on the Uth instant which had fifteen rattles ami a button and measured fire and a half feet. Mr. J. shot the snake, tearing his head pretty woll into pieces, and when he thought he was good dead, pulled bis tail across a pole to cut off his rattles an a trophy, when to the surprise and horror of Johnson, the snake gave a wiggle and flung his bloody head about J.’s legs. There was some tall Jumping, yoa bet. The Mechanics’ Hook and Ladder Company of Savannah have withdrawn from the fire department of that city. We find the following items in the Co lumbus Sun, of Tuesday: Hkavt Damaom.—Ws hear that the family of Mr. Miller, the mail agent on the Southwestern railroad, who was kUlod in the collision at Seago station, has in* ■tituted suit, or intends doing so, for $10,000 datnsges. • Rirsa—Th« Raiw awp Boats.—A mod rain fell yesterday morning. We Hope to have more, though in the after noon the clouds cleared away. Captain Johnson, the agent of the Central Line of Beats, tells us the river to S o’clock in the afternoon had risen four inches. This shows that good rains have fallen in the up country. He would not telegraph lor a boat to come np unless there was three feet of water on the bar. The boat* now come no higher tlian Fort Gaines, and have as much as they oan do in carrying cotton to Bainbridgo. BuiI.I.IA.VT MkUltfADE I!f Wykoton.-- Yesterday morning at the residence of Mr. Thomas F. Threewits, in Wynnton, Win. L Chambers, R<q., and Miss Laura L. Clopton, were married. The ceremony was performed by the remarkable Dr. L. Pierce, who bad officiated aC the mar riage of the grandfather, and the father of the groom. The bride was beautiful y dressed in blue silk, and with tho chaste blush of youth and love upon her cheek, was a fair picture of grace and loveliness. The attenoant* were Chas. J. Swift arid Miss Susie Threewits. Flewellen Cham bers and Mins Lila Redd. The wedded pair left on the afternoon train for Macon, to witness the fair; thence to Nashville to visit relations. The bride is a daugh ter of Hon. David Clopton, of Montgom ery, and the groom, the second son of Judge Wm. H. Chambers, of RiiMsell r«Cclfrryftnrrru .AL ! ..i» & jp>ung lawyer Uie junior partner of tho celebrated i££l firm, Stone A Clopton, of Montgomeiy. The last Greensboro Herald has a Jong account of tho hanging of George Cope- lan. negro, last Friday, for the murder of Miss 8. A. Richards in May. 1871, from which wo quote as follows i When the rope was placed around his neck. Sheriff English told him that ho hail half an hour in which he could say whatever he desired. Tho statement that follows was made partly in reply to questions that were asked x " I am in fc» lsul condition and hope it will be a warn ing to all; but God has forgiven me. X know that I must die ; have no hope of anything else but death right now, and X must prepare to meet it—must make peace below; there is no repentance be yond the grave. It was a bad affair— there was nobody with me—I went into it mystdf, all by myself. The devil led me there; went to get money ; pretty much intended to kill. 1 went in the house, stood by the fireplace anti talked to her a few minutes, then struck her on tho back of the hood with a stick ; she fell by tho fire; I dragged her out on the floor and raped her ; she said, go away; I then took a case knife and cut her throats ■ho did uot speak when I done this; I took money out of her pocket; got the moat, took her watch out of the sideboard; took sugar, flour and butter; I took some clothes and spool thread, but burnt them up; I then put fixe on the floor.and while the house was burning went home. There was nobody else inure. At precisely 12 o’clock, the sheriff out the coni that held the trap-door; tho rope broke and he fell with a crash down the stairway, caught in a sitting posture, and remained silent and motioulos* *, not a tremor shook his frame; his countenance woe placid, and indionted no pnin whatever. He seemed in a perfect sleep. At fifteen minutes nofct twelve, ho wu* again drawn up, mak ing n gutteral sound and stm gling con siderably. In four minutes he ceased to struggle, at the expiration of the fifth minute a slight tremor struck him and lie drew one breath. In fifteen minuten his pulse ceased, but his heart still beat feebly. At thirty minutes it was doubt ful whether thera was any pulsation, at thirty-five minutes Mr. 'Walker again de tected pulsation at the heart, at ten min utes past one life Wits pronounced extinct. No blame attaches to the sheriff for the accident to the rope. It was large and. deemed strong enough by all who saw it The last Griffin Star has these para- graph*: The Dupree will case was settled by compromise hut week, by which Mr. Charles Dupree, of Bear Creek, got f 4.000; Fleming Dupree, of this county, S ot $4,000. These wero brothers of the eceased. Their lawyers seem also to be old Dupree heirs, as they get the lion's share, being $12,000. Messrs. Peeples and Stewart got $3,S00. On the other aide Bob Toombs got about $20,000. Linton Stephens’ estate got a big share, and Alexander Stephens also. After the lawyers all got through there was still a big pile left for old man Dupree’s chil dren. whom Ioonldns in Wall and I more public ham and profligate men than the same num ber of reputed gamblers doing ban ness in the vicinity of Fifth Avenue Hotel. Vigilanoe committees have in some emergencies W-n found not only a neces sity but a salutary remedy for umrental and overwhelming vmkm and crimes. The h’ghost and morftb-nefici n*. expression«of justice have oocaakoally been revealed in an unwritten code familiarly known as “Lynch law.” If the chief earn biers who occasioned the gold panic of 18fl9 and the Northwest comer of 1872, together with the usurers who brought about a state of things which enabled them to loan money st 1 per cent, a day, bad been snspmdaa by the neck across the Attracts which they desecrate, the city would now be exempt ed from present and prospective suffering. The future of our country is by no means u nr loaded. These are specks in its horizon bigger than a man’s hand. Generations of wUer* grow np to consume what their fathers produced. Agricul ture and the mechanic arts are neglect ed. The practical industries of the, country languish. Without emigration we should be unable to cultivate the soil or supply our manufacturing establish ments and work-shops. Parents no longer charge themselves with the duty of preparing their sons by precept and example for lives of industry and useful ness. Hence we have an army of young men seeking a precarious subsistence in offices or cl.riuhips, ending sooner or later in destitution and suffering. Absenteeism is becoming atu-riouaevil; the strain, though less severe than that which has so long impoverished Ireland, is awakening attention. The amount of gold annually expended abroad, is com puted to be over one hundred millions, every dollar of which is practically sunk, for even the passage money goes into the pockets of European* for the support of foreign to the exclusion of American com merce. The moral of all which is that our country has grown too rich. Nations, like individuals, are most happy and vir tuous while by industry and frugality they are making their fortunes. It re quires great wisdom and thoughtfulness, therefore, on the port of the government, the press and those who mold opinion* to guide and guard the people against the fatal consequences of idleness and luxury.
