The November number of this favorite
musical periodical comas to us more
promptly than its predecessors hare done.
Tbs number is a good one as*inspects
both its reading and music pages, and is
handsomely printed ns usual. It opens
with a poem by Charles W. Huhner,
which, as usual, is marred by the ill ef

At last the drouth has been ended by a
refreshing rain which fell during the
whole of yesterday. The rain fell Tory
gently, and the thirsty earth drank up
the whole of it, effectually allaying the
dust which has been so annoying for sev
eral weeks. More rain fell Monday night
and yesterday than fell during the whole
of last month. In fact, we had only one
jpsssnlfi shower during the whole month,
and that was on the morning of the 27th.
However, while we city people were lan
guishing for rain, the’country people were
rejoicing in an unprecedented season for
cotton pieking. They did not wont any
rain.
.Hrlrwriiloglral.
Mr. J. M. Boardman, with his occua-
tomed kindness, furnishes us with the
following result of his weather observa
tions for the month of October. The re
port is remarkable, chiefly for the small
amount of rain which fell duru^t tin

"Peso# Papers.” By Bill Arp. No
1100k oonkl be mor# welcome to Southern,
(specially Georgia readers, than one from
the renowned humorist and satirist, Bill
Arp. He is th© only writer of his style
who is in full sympathy with the South
em people, and hi* letters have had such
a run in Southern journals as no similar
japers ever had before.
In the volume before us we arc glad to
see the old war-time letters which made
thoir author famous; besides several not
less wise and humorous with which tho
public is not so familiar. The book is
very handsomely printed by G. W. Carle-
ton & Co., of New York, and is very gro
tesquely illustrated by Matt O’Brien, of
August*, one of the best cartoonist* in
the cc untry. albeit ho has not taken the
steps neoessary to bring him before tho
public.
••Joisamine.” A novel. By Marion
Borland. Also published by G. W.
CarU-ton k Co. A new book by thia au

The Mayors Court.
For more than a week the doings of the
Mayor’s Coart, and tho transactions of
the Couhty Court; have not besv reconl-
cd, as usual, in 'this deportment of the
TxtsonarH akd MxssxNax*. It was not
that we felt any contempt for these jus
tice shops; but because tho Fair made it
flush times with reporters, and wo hod no
need to fall back upofi tho infirmities and
weakniuse* and wickednesses of human
nature, to find material with which to fill
out a column of city gossip. But the
flush times have past. The city has
dropped back into its quiet old grooves,
and there is not much occurring to swell
the record of events; hence, we find it
necessary not to despire the small things
of the day, but to treasure up such bits
as fall from tho benches of our minor
courts. Hence we found ourself in the
Mayor’i Court yesterday morning, found
Aldersuin J. W. Burke on the bench and
three prisoners at the bar.
The first name called was Sam Taylor,
and the charges against him was steal
ing. Sam i* a colored individual and
roomed with two or three others of the
same uhado of opinion at the Brown
House where they were employed. One
of bin room-mates had a watch
which Sam was anxious to own. and he
sne to the conclusion tliat th# easiest
way to get posession of it was to steal it.
That did not suit the owner of the
watch and he called in a peeler, where
upon Sum took the watch from the trunk
and gave it up, then leaped from a win
dow and fled like “a wild deer over the
plain,” having on nothing but his night
clothes. Th.it was Sunday night, and
tlie offiosrs did not get sight of Sam
again until Monday evening, when ho
was captured. His Honor turned him
over to the County Court, and the prob
ability is tliat he will very soon be
taking poet in r irrying oat a contract to
work the roads of the county.
Wamm Sharpe, a small negro boy, was
caught stealing cotton, and was fined
two dollar.) or five days in the caliboose.
Commodore Murphy illuminated the
court with his beaming countenance yes
terday morning for the first time in nine
weeks. The interval has been spent in
recruiting his health in the hospital. He
was discharged from the hospital Mon
day me ruing. In two hours he was
drunk and in six hours wu in the
v.liloots, where he spent the night. He
was very penitent when brought into
court ytsosrdsy morning and promised all
.. ft* of good behavior, and the court
