But it is not a funny liook, merely, but abounds in the roost cutting satire which has tho power to cause some wincing high places. Messrs. Burke A Co.’s ad vertisement appear* elsewhere. Thr Brown Mouse Ball. The hall given by the proprieto tho Brown House on Wednesday evening was one of the pleasantest social that ever transpired in Macon. tfiulonoe was very large, in spite of the inclement evening, many of the roost beautiful daughters of Macon being prei ent, together with quite a number of At lanta and Augusta ladies. The spacious dining hall of the hotel was cleared and given up to the dancers at an early hour in the evening, and from that time until after midnight there waa no lack of mirth and gayety. The ladies were all ele gantly dressed and beautiful as houris the gentlemen wore as gallant so could have been desired j the music was charm ing, and—what else was needed to mak the evening a most delightful one ? Homr % km I it. We are happy to announco the fact that Mr. A. A. Rolf has returned from several months’ tour in Europe, in fine health ami as genial as ever. Notwith standing his long association with for eigners. he still speaks the English lan guage distinctly, and still reoognises his old acquaintances without any of that baronial formality which it is natural that one should acquire during a four months* sojourn among the grandees and grand things of the old world. We are glad to know that his enjoyment abroad caiuo up to the full measure of his expec tation. He is a close observer of things, and knows more now about the manners and customs of people abroad than some men do who have spent as many year* abroad as he has spent months. We congratulate him upon having bad a "bon voyage and a safe return." Messrs. J. W. Burke & Co.'s Pre ml ii ni. Meam. J. W. Burke A Co., the enter prising booksellers and* printers of this city, took premiums at the State Fair upon everything they exhibited. They got silver medals for* the best selection of chromos exhibited by a merchant; for the best specimen of ledger, journal and cash book from a Georgia house, and for tho best spocimen of book publishing by a Georgia house. They also got diplomas for the best specimen of poster printing, and for tho display of card and bill print ing. They showed a superb stock goods in their lino, but walked over the track in spite of strong opposition. Their display of blank books especially won very elegant, for which they were in drifted to the excellent taste of Mr. John G. Doits. There were no blank book) exhibited except such os were mado solely to till orders from their regular customers. P mum List Correction*. In the premium list, os publish-* 1 y torday morning, some mistakes occurred to which our attention has vexy kindly loon called. Doubtle*# there are others in this list, which are the result of over sight in copying the swards. It waa hiUiriou* task to make the copy, and i our has to to get it out os early as proct cable, it would have been strange if no errors or omissions had occurred. Our report awarded the premium for the best collection of paintings and draw ings, tho work of a single exhibitor, to Mi** Soenowski, of Athena. The award was to Mra. Mary Burke Soznett, of Sjvirta. This waa an error in checking the books in the Secretary’* office. The manner in which the awards for sealivs was made waa not accurately stated. Th# Fairbanks |Scales Company got the diploma for the "best display of steelyards and scales," while tho Howe Company took the diploma for "the best and most accurate scale." Wheeler A \Vll»on. This company received the highest award nt the State Fair for fine stitching on morocco and leather—done on the now Wheeler A Wilson, No. 6. This chine is constructed on new and novel principles and combines more original features than havo appeared in any sew ing machine since the year*lS52. The Wheeler A Wilson Company have been for the post twelve years patiently en deavoring to bring out a machine which should be as perfectly adapted to manu facturing purposes as is their Family Machine to he .behold use; after expend ing nearly $900,000 in careful experiment they have produced a machine unap proachable cumbersom manofacU clothing, tho light, made by t esaiy htr work, and leading m. ry way su^ ner to .e affairs heretofor roof heU. sli.sw The new m.whu .vasy motion and } je rotating hook » ngtb of part.** fo with > tine York WiM was i merit at Vienna, nuchine. We are heartily glsd that this move ment is on foot, sad that it is in the hands of gentlemen who are likely to ™*w> ita suooeas. Macon is about the only city in Georgia which has not a flourishing musical society, and yet there is as much fine musical talent hero ** there is in any other city in tho State. Therefore we can see no reason why such a society should not flourish here, as well M alsewbei*, provided the musical people will give it their attention. We could name a soore or more of ladies and gen tlemen who, if united, would form a com bination of musical talent which could not be surpassed by the same number of amateurs anywhere on the continent. Then let the movement proceed, and we hope the musicians of the city will oor- dially co-operate with it. Ob motion of Alderman J. W. ADYEKXISEMENTS. rComaunkmted.} Editor* Telegraph and Messenger : The novel idea and intonating display of the Republic Life Insurance Company at our State Fair excite* much comment, and some facts, concerning it* origin, stand ing and purposes, and a simple statement of some things that have been accom plished by its enterprising manager may not be uninteresting. The West, like the South, has been an nually drained of millions of dollars for life insurance premiums by Eastern com panies whose charters require Eastern investments, and a number of far-seeing capitalists, knowing the opposition a coun ter movement would produce, organized the Republic with the immense capital ►took of $5,000,000, nearly ten times as much as any company ever had before. Their fou rotation idea is published to the world, which is to prevent, in some meas ure, the usual dram from the West and South of millions of dollars for life insu rance premiums and keep them for in vestment at home. To carry out its leading idee, the con stitution provides that the stock sub scribed and the surplus premiums taken in each locality (in the West and South) hha.ll be invested where received, under the direction of the branch officers, sub ject to the approval of the central com mittee. No one doubts the strength of tho or ganization ; and tho character of its htockholders in Georgia is a sufficient guarantee of its good management and absolute security. If there be a need of money in our State, surely its purpose* < oitmu n<l it to every one; and though my application for a policy was rejected, 1 desire the success of the company, and know others who were rejected that are now zealously working in its interest. The ambition of the superintendent of agencies is well directed; as he enters whole-souled into any enterprise he un dertakes, we are not astonished at his sucoess; and if a dozen such men will unite their efforts, bis hope* will vexy soon be realized. Every good citizen should be willing to encourage this en terprise; for the stopping of this leak will produce wonderful results. It is astonishing to know^ what Mr. Goodnow has accomplished since he or* -anized a branch in Atlanta. Having Iteoome thoroughly identified with our •eople, the Republic block sprung up as *y a magic touch under his direction, and U now an ornament to the cite, and an advertisement to the State. One of the best honks in the South has been located there—mainly through tho work ings of his clear head, and many thou sands of dollars have been brought here for investment through his influence. Owners of real estate in various sections testify to his liticrality in making loons. Many towns havo boon offered assistance in their enterprises, and some cf them have already reaped full benefit there from. In this company every objection to life insurance is met. Here we find positive security for our families, no uncertain promises, but a simple, plain and definite contract, so much insurance for so much money, and the greatest amount for the least amount; the dividends are left in our pockets, the premiums are invested at home, the company insures the policy holder, and if we wish we can insure our lives just as we inaurj our property, only much cheaper. Having seen something of the work ings of this company, knowing its plans and standing from dose investigation, and seeing too tendency of mutual policy holders to come to stock companies, I am ncouragod to pen this artsde, believing ;in investigation bv our people will result in much good to them. Editor* Telegraph and Messenger: I do not admit belonging to the class of grumblers or sore hoods, and yet I wish a little light in regard to the rul ing of a Committee under the Depart ment of Home Industry. Under that •partment I entered two articles for which premiums were offered without any restrictions as by whom they should be uytde; I supposed all classes were in cluded. The articles entered were made in Macon by a life-time resident of Geor gia. If that docs not constitute a home made article, will that learnod committee inform me what does. I understand the committee admitted the superior ty of workmanship of the article* over all others, but ruled them out as being made by an adopt. I* it possible that the committee supposed any one would be so green as to attempt to make an article for exhibition the construction of which they knew nothing about? As well offer premiums for tin ware and require it to bo made by a blacksmith. I understand the com mittee offering the premiums did not intend to exclude any class. If they did, they should have uo stated. If not, they were unfortunate ia the selection of a committee that did net understand what constituted home-made articles. The general outlook in financial affair* daring the week has improved la some zespect*. Cotton has been freely sold daring the week and all taring paper met, which ha* put considerable money in circulation. The banka here aro in a strong condition, and propose to keep so. Their lines of discount* are Uoge in riew of the huge red art ion made in depos it*. and therefore they are not draoonnting. even for depositors, except to partially renew maturing paper, which they own. The consequence is that that the merchant* are forced to contract their operations. Modi depends upon the action the planters in sending their cotton to their fac tors. as with the cotton in hand they can renew maturing paper or raise money to meet the wants at the planter* without the sacrifice of the cotton. The chief obstacle to the recovery from the de pression caused by the panic is the condition of the New York banka and their, resumption of fall currency payments at an early day is engerly looked for.
