mined he was, and finding his mind fully
made np upon this point, cva*«-*I to inter
pose any further advice.
Mr. Maugham enteral the war in 1S61
am corporal in the Maoon Volunteers. In
hair of Fowls. the autumn of tne same year be was
^lv -rti -••• mad*- Adjutant of the 30th Georgia Beg-
Ts auction intent, which waa then under the oom-
to-day. mand of CoL Dand J. Bailey. Early in
1862 the regiment waa reorganized and
• y fowls, all of Mr. Mangham was elected Lieutenant
o-L»y for what they Colonel. Tow an! the latter part of 1862,
Cel. Batley resigned the command of the
regiment, and on the 16th of December
of the same year Mr. Mangham was ap
pointed Colonel. In this position he
served until the battle of Chickamanga,
when he received a wound in the hip
which totally unfitted him for future mil
itary service. The wound kept him in
bed for about a year, and it was long be
fore he was able to go without crutches.
In the army CoL Mangham was dis
tinguished as a disciplinarian. His regi
ment was frequently pronounced the best
drilled and the best disciplined in the
army. He had the confidence and the
love of his men. While he exacted a
rigid discharge of duty from every man
under his command, he was as careful of
their comfort as a father could be for his
children, and saw that they were well
clothed and well fed. He was conspicu
ous for his gallantly upon the field, and
had it not been for the wound which
totally unfitted him for further military
service*, ho would have been made a Briga
dier-General immediately after the battle
of Chikamauga.
When the war had ended, CoL Mang
ham returned to Macon and for a time
was engaged in mercantile pursuits, in
connection with Mr. C. D. Findlay.
When the Central Bank of Georgia was
organised, he was elected cashier, and
held the position up to the time of his
leath. and discharged its duties up to
the lattur part of last week.
He was the most active man in the re
organisation of the Macon Volunteers
two or throe years ago, and the re
organisation of that company was largely
due to his exertions and to him the com
pany owes mainly the selection of their
very handsome uniform. His being
wounded disqualified him for active duty
with the company; but he held the posi
tion of Secretary and Treasurer up to his
death.
There are few men of his age in Macon
who could not have been better spared.
He was a man of sound judgment, of
sterling integrity and of tho most scrupu
lous exactness in all his transactions.
His promise was the criterion of his ac
tions. What he said he would do. If
ho once announced a determination it was
irrevocable. He knew nothing but the
closest adherence to honor, and he had
tho entire confidence of every one who
knew him.
His funeral will take place this after
noon at 3 o’clock. A few days before his
death he told his wife that he wanted to
be buried by the Macon Volunteers,
wanted them to fire a salute over his
grave, and wanted to be buried a
as possible to the soldiers' cemetery. The
funeral will take place from the Mulber
ry Street Methodist Church. Tho Vol
unteers are ordered, to meet at their ar
mor f at half post two o’clock. It is hoped
that every man will turn out.

On Monday night the people of Macon
are again to have the pleasure of witness

is ono of the beak that ever play«>d in
Maoon. There ia not a man in it that ia
not good i while, as vocalists, there is no
troupo that equals it. They will stop
here but one night, in passing thmugh
from New Orleans, where they have been
playing to crowded houses. Tho New
