As stated a day or two ago, the com
I any has nataod this engine after Mr. O.
O Sparks, who is one of the oldest and
beet known citizens of Macon. It is
worthy compliment to a wor‘. by man. Mr.
Sparks came to Macon in 1836. His first
employment here waa loading flat boats
at eoventy-five oents a day. A gentle
man who was then in the cotton business,
saw iV-TO waa material in him to fit him
for a more responsible position than that
of a common laborer, and took him into
bis warehouse. From that time to the
present Mr. Sparks has been in the cot
ton business, being now a member of the
leading warehouse firm in the city. He
been Mayor of the city several terms,
a judge of the Superior Court for
six years, and has represented the
unty in the Legislature. He
le of the most public spirited
and generous citizens of Mnoon
bonce, we say the boys have done
well to pay him this handsome oompli
ment. Hie picture will be placed in the
signal light of the steamer and his name
will be conspicuously inscribed on the
engine. We predict a brilliant future
for the " O. O. Sparkes."

The Funeral of Colonel Nsnshsm.
The funeral of Col. Thomas W. Mang-
hum took place at three o'clock yesterday
afternoon, from the Mulberry Street
Methodist Church. The remains
escorted from his late residence to the
church by the Macon Volunteers, mus
tering over fifty guns. The services at
the church were conducted by Rer. J. 0.
Branch, and consisted of the simple but
beautiful burial service of the Methodist
church.
Mr. Arthur L. Wood presided at the
organ and played a dirge as the solemn
procession entered the church. The choir
then sang "Nearer My God to Thee’’ as
a aolo and chorus. The preacher then
read and the choir sang a portion of Dr.
Wat U’ beautiful hymn, beginning:
** Ob Otid. our help in s*t* past.
Our hope for ysais to come.
Our fchclU’r from the stormy blast
And our eternal home."
An eloquent and fervent prayer closed
the exercises at tho church. No funeral
servioe was preached nor were any re
marks at all made by the preacher.
The remains were then taken to tho
hearse and a procession formed, with the
Volunteers in front, followed by the
hearse and a long line of carriages. The
pall bearers were Hon. W. A. Huff, Col.
J. E. Jones, Capt. T. G. Holt, Dr. J. S.
Baxter, B. C. Smith. C. M. Wyly, T. B.
Gresham and C. E. Campbell. The latter
four were of tho Macon Volunteers, and

A Call for City Taxes.
Mr. O. F. Adams, the City Tax Col
lector and Receiver, publishes a notice
thi* morning calling upon the people to
•x»me up and pay their taxes between now
:ind the 20th. The city needs the money
to meet current expenses, and has played
the part of creditor as long as it can af
ford to do so consistently with the pnblic
jifood. Mr. Adams has called in person
upon many citixcns some doxen or two
times, but Aron's that he is too modest to
call any more, anil the people must now
come np to his office and settle, and if
they do not executions against all delin
quents will be issued as certainly as the
first of December comes. The end of the
year is approaching and the sity will
need every dollar of its revenue to pay
off its creditors. Th.? moral of this whole
thing is the taxes must be paid.
Thr Fair will be Continued
To-morrow at the store of Messrs. Greer,
Lake A Co. They will open with two
hundred and fifty bunches of banana*,
direct from the Antilles, an indefinite
amount of oranges from Florida and
Cuba, a hundred boxes of pears from j
California, apples from every quarter of
the continent where apples grow, and
grapes fresh and fine as ever grew any-
where. The show to-morrow will consist j
mainly of fruit, nevertheless their fine j
; tock of groceries is barely depleted.

SUNDAY-SCHOOL CONVENTION.
To Sunday-School Workers in
Georgia.
rpiIE great importance of tho Sunday-school
J. work demands closer union and more tho
rough organization among those engaged in it, to
tbe end that every neighborhood iq our State may
be reached, and that we may possess greater fa
cilities for obtaining a knowledge of the exact
condition and wants of the vast field spread out
befo v us; and as this can only bo done by means
of a convention, it is therefore decided to invite
all of the Sunday-schools connected with tlR Bap
tist Churches in the State of Georgia to send rep
resentatives to attend a meeting of Sunday-school
Workers, at the Cotton Avenue Baptist Church,
in the city of Macon, on
Saturday, November 15th, 1873,
At 10 o'clock, A. M.
The object of this meeting is to take into con
sideration the wants of tho work, and to organize
a convention, if thought best. We earnestly urge
Sunday-school Superintendents and Pastors of
Churches to co-operate in this matter and send up
delegates. Eminent Sunday-school men will be
present, and every effort will bo made to make
the meeting interesting and instructive. Each
delegate is requested to bring all the information
witliin his reach, not only in regard to his own
school, but all schools in his neighborhood or sec
tion of country. Each school may send as many
delegates as its means will allow. All ministers,
whether delegates or not, will be admitted, if they
desire.
