Up to within the last week, the river ha* been *o low all the fall that the one or two boat, ply- in* it were wholly inadequate to more the cotton to market, and hence the light reoeipt* by river at this point and at Co lumbus. Little or no cotton now goe* to Apalachicola, and nearly all the planter, living near the river from this point to it* mouth, .hip their cotton hen Columbus, where they purchase supplies. Therefore the present the river is an item of no small tanco to planter* and t this section. The weather since the rains has been Uw and unseasonably warm, but itUJ jflad to say. our community generally is » tl» wwoent of excellent health. There have been, however, three deaths since Saturday last in this city. Mr, M. Mwon. wife of Capt. Macon, of the ?!“«*• ‘Rod y- Htcrday morning ?,° aomo ■«" “he took * ft8r childbirth, three weeks ■ which was the immediats aauso of her ae ~ i \ "hu was a most accomplished and charming lady, greatly endeared to a large circle of family relatives and friends. She leaves an almost heart broken husband, a little daughter about 111 y*»r* old, \ij infant of three weeks, and this entire community to mourn her untimely demise. In this •ore and most sad affliction, Capt. Maoon haa the sinoore sympathy of ail his friends and acquaintances. I am also deoplv nained in informing you of the death of Mrs. Sarah Clayton, of Opelika, mother of Gen. If. D. Clayton, of this oounty, and of Mr*. Dr. Pope, of this city. She died on Saturday night last in this city, at the resideaoe of her son-in-law. Dr. J. C. Pope, in about the 75th year of her ago. She was a most estimable My in all the relations of life, and beloved with a motherly affection by ail who know her well. Her remains were taken to Ope lika for interment. Mr. Loti Williford, of this city, young tnan of eighteen or twenty year*, also died on Saturday night last, of white swelling in tho leg. HiH surgeon removed a portion of the tone in tho af fected leg, but soon after tho operation w»» performed mortification followed an.l death quickly claimed its victim. Ho was a promising and excellent young man, just entering upon manhood and a career of usefulness, and bis death is greatly lamented. You have heard, probably, of the death of lion. K* C. Ellington, which occurred at his residence in this city on Wednesday last. Ho was a native of your State, anil for many year* past had been a merchant at Georgetown, but sinco the war has been in the cotton business at Eufauln. He liad filled several imjHirtant ami re- Nljonsil.le positions in life, and always with credit to himself and to those who honored him with their support. Ho was one of the purest and best men in all this region of country, and hi* death is griev- »u*ly deplored. Ho was a member of the City Council of Eufauln at tho time of hie death. The Circuit Court of Barbour county convent* to-day at Clayton, Judge J. McCaleh Wiley prodding. The most important cate to this community to be t«ied In tho cane of the State iiguin.it Mr. Wm. Courtney, a policeman, now on duty in Eufaula, for killing a negro burglar la»t summer whom he wan endeavo ng to arrest at night. The negro wan in the act of carrying off Homo atolen plunder when Courtney called to him to stop, The negro dropnod the plunder but con- tinned to run, when Courtney fired one •hot from hie revolver, merely to frighten him to a halt, but it made the thief run fan tor. The officer then fired directly at him and killed him. Upon theee facte Judge Kiel#, of the City Court, the preliminary hearing of the ci adjudg h1 Courtney guilty of murder in the first degree, and refuaod him bail. The priHonei, however, got a hearing be fore Judge Wiley, then holding tho Cir cuit Court for Henry county, who at the request of counsel for tho prisoner, bailed him in tho ana $2,f»oo, to answer a charge of manslaughter at this term of tho Cir cuit Court for Barbour oounty. The cast, i»* of dome importance, in that it will settle the point a* to when an officer should shoot to effect an arrest. Baltimore Sun. October 2a. True Blue, tlie winner of the four-mile heut race Saturday, left Baltimore for Sa« Franciiico lut night in a special •took palaoe car by the Northern Central J&ailrood. True Blue's rider, Barbee, with Chamberlin's agent and his colored man Jim, aocompantevl tho horse in his sumptuous car, Thu outside of the car was pointed a bright red. Upon either sidon brilliantly displayed placard was pouted, reading as follows: M Please do not detain me.—Business of importance with my friends, Thad. Stephens and Joe Daniels, requires me. Yours, truly, True Blue.'* Upon expressing a desire to inspect the interior of the car and to interview the champion, permission was cheerfully accorded by Mr. Chamberlin. *rho rear end of the car, which had bean set apart for tho valuable steed, was tilled all around with thick mattresses, as was also the roof. Glass windows were placed in the side to secure proper ventilation. Tho fore j«ort of tho cor was divided into five *eparate comportments for two of True Biue's stable companions who were to accompany him. The middle of tho car was arranged for the accommodation of attendants and for the storage of tern- porary supplies of provender. It is ex pected that the horse will reach San Francisco iu about eight days. This will allow True Blue only about a week iu which to recover from the effects of his long trip by rail before contending against Thad. Stephen* and Joe Daniel! in the $30,000 race which will take place November 15. The result of this enter prise is watched with considerable inter est by turfmen in all parts of the coun try. Should True Blue win the raoe, he wall undoubtedly never start again. Some Favorable Signs, A prominent and intelligent Boston manufacturer said, yesterday, that after all nobody had foiled yet who ought not to. The Spcaguot, for instance, have been running wild in business for years, over-extending their credit in all direc tions, and careful money-lenders have been shy of their notes for a long while. The innocent may suffer through them; if this suspension of confidcnoo and credit goes on. even the strong and the prudent will fall—but so far it Is true that only reckless speculators, either in stocks, bonds or trade, have gone by the board. Again, the heart of things is sound and healthy—the consumers are ready and have the means to take the foot! and the goods they want at a fair price. ^ Two of the groat retail dry-goods store* in Boston sold more goods during October tlxan in any ^October before. Then there were two great wholesale sales of print* at New York, this week, of both tae Sprague* and the Manchester print factories. They wore, it is true, offered below cost, but at prioes at which they can now be manufactured at a profit —but there was a groat rush toget i.iem, and all were greedily taker. Speculation is at fault—it has come to grief—but genuine trade is only suffering from the distrust and increased cost of credit that this ruin of reckless gambling has cre- a ted.—Sj) ri ti j/ULi Republican. Ti." f.1- .iM" r. -i-l-nt- in th.- n.-l-u. borhood of Kensington Gardens hav# jost been startled by a sensational piece of i senn.IaI and a melancholy suicide. A ; short time since a celabrated lead, r of the I demi-monde, who lived in magnificence at K- u ington, succeeded in winning the 1 affe- tions of a fast young gentleman of I high social position, and, notwitlutand-1 mg the opposition of his relatives, he married her. The next day they left for I Pans- There, it appears, the bridegroom plunged into the most reckless expendi tures, and lost enormous sums at gaming. In leas than four months he had squan dered all his own and his wife’s money. They returned together about a month vinoe, and took up their abode in her mansion. About two weeks since be wss induced by some means to leave her, and return to his father's bouse. His friends in sisted on hi* applying for divorce, on the grounds that h<- had been duped into marriage. Proceeding* were commenced, and the summon* served on the unlucky woman. Yesterday morning she wua found dead on the floor of her bod-room, haring stabbed herself in the heart. She left a most pathetic letter, directed to her husband, which was clinched in her left hand, together with his portrait. She aocused him of being the cause of her death, and with treating her with the bluest ingratitude. She had beggared herself by supplying him with money, and even the furniture and plate in her h<mse, together with the house itself, was -faopfileHsly mortgaged. This “poor unfortunate” was consid ered one of the most beautiful women in Lon lnn. She wax tall, slender and ex quisitely molded, with a magnificent head and shoulder*, and lustrous dark eyes. From documents found in her writing desk, it was ascertained that more than a year ago she had saved her husband (then her lover) from utter ruin and dis grace by giving him $30,000 to cancel his defalcation of some funds in the bank in which he was then employed. She had also given him other large amounts of money previous to marriage, and had really married him to try to re form him, and a* the same time reclaim herself. The affair has caused a profound sensation among the aristocratic folks of the West End. as the young gentleman, notwithstanding his known extravagance and fastness, moves in the best society. Kouglllng It. A few evenings since a Detriot chap was sparking a West-Side girl who wore an Elizabethan ruff. Expecting his com ing, she bad dressed for the occasion, and her ruff, stiff as an unrestricted use of satin-gloss could make it, was of the mo -t Stunning character. The lover came at the orthodox time, and was ushered into the parlor, where the enchanting maiden and her father and mother were seated. Ho was cordially received, and the evening passed pleasantly, although the old folks sat up a good deal longer than the youngsters thought necessary. Finally they went to bed and the twain were left alone. After a certain amount of preliminary bashfulness, the maiden assented to her lover’s request for a kiss. He essayed to take it, but was met at every point by a bristling wall of tar latan and starch. He came up to her in front, and was gouged in each eyo. He sidled up to her and tho right-hand prong cut one of his ears half off. Ho attempted to reach the prixe over her shoulder, and a chevaux dc frise tickled his nose till ho was obliged to take a seat and sneeze. Then the maiden came to the rescue, and held down one side of the provoking gruff, and again the lover ndvanced. Just os he ha<l all but reached her blooming cheek, the damsel lost her grip, and the razor-like decoration flew up with a force that took an “under bit out of his right oar." Then he got mad. Then she got mad. Then they both got mail, and an anticipated wedding has come to a pre mature end. The Special Attention Of tho Ladies is called to the fine stock of French.
