Mossr* JJrown & Co. tire our thanks for copies of tho Decemler numbers of tho Atlantic and tho Galaxy, both of which are very superb specimens of American magazine making. Both make liril'iant promises for the coming year. A notable feature in the Atlantic is a poem of somo length by John G- Whit tier, entitled “John Underhill.” It is a narrative poem in Whittior's finest style. I hr I1.1I of 1 hr Pike Trial Xo Verrtlri 1 et liv the Jury. After a fatiguing lalior of four coopec- utive d iyi>, the Superior Court has at last gotten through with the trial of Louis B. Pike, charged with the murder of Chx*. F. Baer. At half-past four o'clock yes terday afternoon the case was giren to the jury. This ease has excited a vast amount of | stork interest in the oommuc ity, and the trial has attracted great attention, both on ac count of tho interest felt in the homicide and because of the eminent counsel em- j ployed on both sides of the investigation, i The case has been fought as hard and as ably as ever a case was in Macon. Every 1 inch of the ground was stoutly disputed, j The counsel for tho State, believing that their case was good bent all their ener gies to make it out, while the counsel for the defense were equally active and vigi lant in the interest of their client. The testimony was handled with the greitest adroitness, and the points in the case were developed with tho most cautions precision. Col. Hsll concluded hi t magnificent ar gument yesterday, morning, and was fol lowed by Cols. Lofton. Weems and Har ris in scarcely less able and eloquent ar guments. The five speeches made in this trial are pronounce*! the equal of any five speeches ever made in the Court-house. The speeches yesterday occupied the Court from nine in the morning until three in tho afternoon, when Col. Harris dosed. A recess of half an hour was then taken for dinner, after which Judge Hill delivered his charge to tho jury. The charge was about an hour in length, and laid the case before the jurors in a man ner that was so plain and cnb’ghtenod that it seemed to be impossible for them to be mistaken as to their duty in the matter. The jury failed to agree upon a verdict, and at a late hour last night it was an nounced that they were locked up for the night. They will probably not lie heard from before tho court meets at nine o'clock to-day. Rock.Ar- fit rim*t Cmmsi. North>■ in*. X<« Amber »*h, ky thd U me Hr. Roarer SCsttst*. kinws sist Has FaxsIKK. In our report of the Piko trial yester day morning, tho following paragraph occurs in tho testimony i £. if. Jlroirn rtwaUnl by ttr defense —I have contributed nothing to this prosecu tion. I hare done no more than any other officer would do. I went to New York, i am a United State.*! officer, and when it routes in my way to work up anything I do it. This was a mistake, os it was John Gillespie who was so-called and not Mr. Brown. Tho latter says he is not a gov- eminent detective and holds no other prirato oflico under tho Federal Govern- meat, but is a first-class rebel. | The mis take occurred through our own inadvert ence. The Mayor's Courr. His Honor, thy Mayor, found four cosos on docket yesterday morning. Two well-known citiscns had a small pas sago at arms on Third street about noon on Wednesday, and they paid five dollars each for tho privilege of settling difficulties ill that way. Joe Jonos. n colored boy, was up for htooling J:MO, from Mr. Avery. Joo •wned the theft, and said ho wds insti- gnlb’il by o colored man to do tho steal ing. lie went off with an officer to get tho money. His case will probably come before tho Connty Court. Officer Ilisliop brought George Persons, another young negro, in on tlio chargo of stealing. His vaso wiu continued until to-day. As Bbiliop was conducting tlio young rcprolmto hack to the liar racks, tho young thief concluded to try leg bail, alt/,' gnvo Bishop a lively chase for about four squares; but Bishop lrad tho better wind aud brought back tho fugitive and cooped him. Amiiaeuiriluv Coming. Rose and Harry Watkiflshave engaged Ralston Hall for tho niglits of tho 1st and 2d of January. We know of few actors who will bo more heartily irol- comcd in Macon. Tlio San Francisco Minstrejs will play in Ralston Hall on tho 2tlth and 27th of January. This will bo tho first trip this famous minstrel troupe has ovor made through tho South, and thoir patronago will bo limited only by ths capacity of The buildings in which they perform. They aro nt tlio very head of their pro- jfes-ion, and tho best in if. The Spalding-Porker combination will bo hers early in December, with Miss Ada Gray as the “ star." This lady gets doable the salary that is paid Miss EI- tlridgo, who was lately hero, and of course ought to bo very much bettor. Anuxng tlio others to bo brought out by Messrs. Spalding and Parker are Da. v. sport and John E. Owens. Tho latter will be welcomed with his “ barl of apple The Cold Snap Culminated just about sunriso yesterday morning, when tho thermometer dropped down to 21, a degreo of coldness which has seldom boon experienced in Novem ber in this latitude. Tho temperature was as low a little after sunrise as it was atony time during the night. For nearly tyo hours after tho dawn of day there was little or no variation, tho mercury pointing at 24. Tho weather remained cold up to noon, at which time it began to relax a little, and toward evening it was less unpleasant than it has been since last Saturday. Last night the temperature was higher than it had been during tho day, and tho sky was some- what liozy, and the atmosphere smoky, as if rain were not very far in tho future. Tho probability that the phenomenon which produced tho cyclono Sunday night, is also accountable for tho present very extraordinary spell of weather. It is very certain that Old Probabilities has suf fered things to get sadly wrong. Possi bly he is so busily engaged in watching tho war cloud which is hovering over Cabo, that he has no time to keep down these littlo domestic broils. BEADING NOTICES.
