Death of Mrs. JI. «tr CrufTenrled.
We regret to aunounoo that telegram
were received in this city late yesterday
afternoon announcing the death at Clo-
venlalc, Dado county, Ga., of Mrs. Anna
Lou de Graffcnriod. wife of M. de Graf,
fenried. Esq., and daughter of our late
fellow-citUcn, Hon. Jas. A. Nisliet. We
learn Gist her remains will reach here on
Wednesday or Thursday morning, for in
torment in Bono HiU Cemetery.
A Smart Fall.
Three young gcutlomen went out, on
Sunday, to take a look at the now Mercer
University building. In going from the
third to tho fourth story, there being no
steps, they found it necessary to "coos
it" up a largo polo that was at hand.
They went up ail safely enough; but, in
deecending, one of them was hot os good
a “coon” as ho thought ho wna, and fcU
from one story of tho building to tho
othor, alighting fiat of bis hack. Being
a man who is pretty woU walled in with
flesh, he suffered no serious injury from
tho fall, but after ho hail ooaecd bouncing
arose and walked off os complacently os
if nothing had happened. Ho ia satisfied
that thoro is aomu fatality about this
building, os a man who ventures any
where about it ia almost sure to fall.
Mauritius SfUrlilet
Some parties—boys it is presumed—
"just for tho fun of tho thing,” amused
thomselves Saturday night by carrying
off people's gates. We liayc hear J of two
on Second street that were removed—one
of which has not yet been recovered.
* This sort of amusement may bo fun for
tho boys, but it must bo a very poor kind
of fun, sinoe no ono can enter into its on
joyment but thomsolvcs. It looks very
much like malicious mischief, and if some
of them should happen to be caught in
pranks of this kind Judge Weems would
probably decide that it ia maliaioiu mis
chief. Wo like boys, and would bo very
sorry to soo any of them arraigned upon
ao graven charge; therefore wo advise
them to bring homo the missing gate,
and in future participate in that kind of
fun only which harms no one.
TUr First National Hank.
A striking improvement has been inode
in the building on tho corner of Second
and Cherry streets, occupied by the First
National Bank. It was, before the im
provement, a plain, old-fashionod two
story brick building, with old-timo win
dows and doors. It it now surmounted
with ornamental iron parapets and win
dow cape; tho antiquated windows have
been token out and their places supplied
with fine plate glass; tho old shutters
have l>een removed from tho second story
windows, and genteel inside .shutters put
in their stead; tho door leading to tho
offiee of Messrs. I. C. riant A Son has
been removed farther up tho street, and
the place of tho old door is supplied with
a plate glass window, and tho building
has been handsomely pointed outside,
two shad os of drab being used. W ork-
mcn are now engaged in renovating and
decorating the interior. Instead of being
one of tlio plainest buildings in tho city,
this has liccome one of tho neatest and
most noticeable. Those old china trees
which stood along the Cheriy street side
of tho building have been removed, and
passers-by now havo a fair view of it.
A Proitlgy.
Atlanta, aa is well known, is prolific of
prodigies, not all of which aro as genuine
as tho one we are about to notice.
Wo havo before us a neat little pam
phlet of sixteen pages, entitled "Thomas
A'Bocket: A Historical Drama in Three
Acts.” By Paul Bleckley. The author
of this trecksrf is a aon of Logan E
Bleckley, Esq., and i* only fourteen years
old. The writer of this met the lad fire
years ago, when ho was a mere ehihl of
nine years of age. Ho had then read
three of Shakspearo’s plays, and had
studied them. This course of study had
run through a spaced about five months.
He could repeat all tho plays from begin
ning to end, without making a mistake,
and if a single tine were read from any
one of the throo plays, ho could at onoo
toll which play it was fton, name the
act and tho scene, designate the charac
ter using the expression, and also tho
characters present at the time the ex
pression is used. Ho could also uoiue. at-
thoir proper places, all the toUs and «*-
euais and other stage directions tlJSlt were
printed with the play.
This we regarded as a moat wonder
ful accomplishment, for a lad ao young
aa he was, and we still think *0. - It
not merely the machine work of memoriz
ing ; but the lad showed his appreciation
of the plays by his readiness to discuss
them. He had his favorite characters,
those which he thought, were tho finost
creations, and pronounced criticisms upon
the plays, which evinced a clear under
standing of them. We doubt if this
achievement has over been equaled; and
upon H we base the lad’s claim to being
a prodigy.
But. with the knowledge above related,
we still wore not prepared to expect from
this boy anything in the way of a drama
half so creditable as the ono before us.
The play is not what would be expected
from a man of mature years, but is ex
traordinary for a boy. The incident on
which it is based is well selected, being
from English history, during the reign of
Henry II. Tho scenes are presented with
much dramatic power, and in language
against which no objection can be raised.
Wo like the entire f-erfarman and
think it promises a brilliant future for
the lad. There is no telling what he
may in time accomplish, .is this evidence
of genius suggest* few impossilititiesj
that ar. lik-ly to arise before h::u in 1!-1
representations made .-specially«

THE LOGAN
Fertilizing Compound
This fertilizer is again offered to the
public in its original purity. The stand
ard lias been kept up in every respect
and its intrinsic valuo has again been
demonstrated during the past summer.
It is recommended, because:
“It is permanent in its effects in return
ing to the soil the fertilizing ingredients
taken from it by excessive cropping.
“It gives to cotton tho food necessary
to sustain life while fruiting, therefore,
what is called rust seldom occurs where
this fertilizer is used.
It is the best restorer of worn out
lands known to agricultural chemistry.
Its effects are immediate in the pro
duction of large returns the first season.
“It is good for all crops, on any soil,
being pure unadulterated plant-food.
'It is as good ns the best, and is the
least expensive of any known good fertil
izer.
‘It is manufactured at the South and
almost entirely of Southern material.
It utilizes the ammonia found on
every farm which is tho most expensive
part of all complete fertilizers.**
Wo subjoin a few of the many certifi
cates in our possession, os to its value,
from well known parties who have used
it, and to whom we would refer.

Are the Best Stoves in Use for the Reason that
they do the Cooking in a More perfejet
Manner, with Less Fuel and in a
Shorter Time than any
other Stove and will
hut Double as Long.
THE OLD COMPLAINT
Of common Stores, that they fail to cook well on
tlie bottom of the oven is never heard where this
stove is used. They have been in the market a
quarter of a century, (all improvements being
adopted so fast aN their merits are known.) Over
two hundred and fifty thousand now m daily use,
>peruing health and happiness to millions.
We aro agents for 3fiddle and Southwest
Georgia for this popular stove, and can sell them,
at wholesale or retail, as low as an ordinary sec
ond-, or even third-class article can be purchased.
