Fram the Ik tmit Free liw.} At the last meeting of the Pioneer So ciety Ur. J. S. Tit.t.itt* rood the following ■ketch, print; the incidents in the life of a Michigan man who. although in perfect health, kept his bed for nearly twenty years t Ur. Samuel Dunn emigrated from the State of New York to Michigan in 1S.12, and Mettled in the townahipof Plymouth, W.yne county, three milos west of the Tillage of Plymouth, where he resided until hia -i.-wth, which oocurrod in the month of liny, )H73 Ife was born in the year 1702, and was therefore eighty-one yoem of age at the time of his death, lie served in the war of 1H12, was honorably diaeimrged, and a pension waa granted him I>y the General Government about a year liefer.- bis .loath, not aeentof which, nowerer, did he or any of bis family ro om re. Nothing very unusual in bis lifo nr- rutTed during the first twenty years of his residence here. He was a man of in temperate habits, and nearly orcry week would go to the Tillage and hare a spree. At such times hs was very noisy, but not quarrelsome. The writer of this sketch has frequently Iward him call out at the dead of night for some one to "come and Mock the wheel” while he was ascending a steep hill an hia way home. On going out Mr. Dunn would be found standing midway up tho hill, stamping and tread ing like absiky horse, culling out loudly for some one to "come and block the wheel.” After making two or three at tempts to ascend the hill ho would look down to tho foot of it and tako another start. After two or throe efforts of this kind he would finally reach the top, when he would want to bet "two-and-six that he could yell louder and jump higher than any other man in thoeommnnity.” lie had in his woods a very large hol low tree, and hero he was in the habit of going when he hod his sprees, and hold what ho railed his "enuip meetings.” At such times tho wools would resound with his devotions, which were characterised more for zeal than for piety. After an “unseal awakening” in this hollow troo one day. he went to the house, took down thu bottle from the shelf, took a “horn,” and then made a solemn vow that ho would never touch another drop of ardent spirits while ho lived, nr utter .another ootli. And he religiously kept hit row, for he immediately went to bed and lay there for nineteen years and nine months. During all this long time he was never known to have hia clothes on or to walk a step. At first, for a nund>cr of years, lie was vory taciturn, und would not con verse with any one. and whenever persons ap proached his bed he would turn hi* head away from than. During tho latter pe riod of his life be would converse witii members of tho family sufficiently to make bis wants known, wlii.-h were few nml easily supplied. He seemingly enjoyed the bo-t of liealt h during all this time, never took uny medi cine hut once, and then only some simple remedy. His appetite was good, anil lie ato two liaarty meals a day, breakfast and dinner, but no supper. Ho preferred hearty food, and relished pork, potatoes nml greens, baked boana mid moat. He drank tea and coffee regularly, but noth ing stronger. Ho slept soundly from ton to twelve hours out of the twenty-four. Never but once did he express a wish to have his clothes on and go out. One .lay tho family were all absent except a little grandson, lie expressed a wish to this little l>oy that he might have his clothes on and go down to the hollow tree where ho held his last- devotion* j but the little fellow could not find hi* pants, and oo on opportunity was lost of testing his ability to walk. His memory was remarkable, and his intellect remained unimpaired to the last. He manifested some interest in passing eventi, and would occasionally ask infor mation respecting them. Hearing the clatter of a mowing machine one day, he was very anxious to know what it wai. Ho luul never heard a word about such a ms- cliine. so he got his daughter-in-law to put him in n cliair and wheel him to the door so that he could see it work. Hi* food wo* carried to him, placed on a stand nenr his bed, and then ho was left to himself, as ho nover would par take of his food while any one was pres ent. After a short time the food would be gouc, and he would be found snugly in bed. He never missed his two meals a day until just before lio died, and he could not bo persuaded to eat a third. His daughter-in-law took tho sole care of him during the but sixteen years of his life, shaving hiui, washing him, and pre- i string bis food for him, a rare instance, indeed, of filial affection and devotion. No disease attacked him to terminate hi* mortal career. He simply lived on, the lamp of life growing dimmer and dimmer, nntil finally it went out alto gether. Ho mu not very much ema ciated, but r.-Mined to the last liis usual bodily proportions, which were always very spare. He va- twice married, and survived his last consort some twelve or fifteen years. Hi'terv, probably, does not furnish a parallel instance ct cue whose early life mu »o active, so full of stirring, exciting scenes, and whose after life was such on utter void and blank. * not sure wii. tlier I did right or I wrong. I am sure that I meant rig J It wni on this wise. Behoving implicitly tliat the bending of little human twigs I should b% accomplished during the early I stages of their growth. T c included to commence on Viers. My intention was I to give her s lesson in firmness. Ac cordingly I filled s box with chestnuts, | and placed it within her reach, saying, “Now, Mere, deer, you must not touch them without my permission.” “Well, then, I dess I'll not,” was the reply, while the brown-eyed three-year- old gazed wistfully toward the sweet temptation. I gave her mix or eight ” In my dear little potit. fank ’oo I” I went to my work, and labored with all the cheerf ulness of an inventor who is pretty sure his machine is a success. During the afternoon it occurred to my mind that those eight chestnuts were lasting a remarkable time. Assuming my blandest tone for tho ormxim j I ” Vieve, have you eaten all your chest nut#?^ “No. I fink not." " Come here, darling. Where do yon get so many ?” “ Oh, I (fits ’em out o’ my pot tit.” “Will, there are move than I gave you first,I said, ms I examined the dainty " “O! Vieve, have you been disobeying me, and getting more out of that box?” “I ’spect* p'raps I have.” “But are yon sure?” “Yes, I’, pitty sure.” “Ob, dear Vieve,“ I cried, with the feelings of one who discovers hia inven tion to be a failure, “this makes poor j mamma feel so sod. I ir — B- - 1 punish you, hut what must I do ? I must have my little girl to obey me. Oh 1 what shall Ido?” Tbs small sinner looked reflective. “Well, mamma,” she presently raid, in solemn tones, ”1 dess 'oo bad better pray.” Believing her suggestion a wise one, embodying about all the wisdom of the entire affair, I acted upon it. Returning to my occupation after our session had adjourned, the first thing that c night my attention was a scrap of old news paper, containing this sentence: ” He who through intention or neglect throws before another a temptation is, if he be overcome, equally guilty.” I put away the box of chestnuts, and am waiting further light. at recept T>IBU POSTPOX F.DSHER1FP SALES—WJ] ■D U sold before the Court-house door in tbe etty of Mfu'oo.oti tt'first Tuesday in Dmnber next, within the legal lu«n U ule, the following property* b>-wit; TJatjircelol bad situated west of th* city o JlacQn. near the tiboc known a* the rezideoce o James W Knott and family. brine SO am of to 48. and more lolly describe t in the dead • Ons JSfauanon to A g Bw. trustee, formerly «4 the children <i James W Knott. dated lot day c< November. isso. and ren-nicd fa book I. folio •**.«« the Clerk's afire. Has the following Powerful Kecommendations for Planters: It is a genuine English made Manure, the only one in tho market, and manu factured by a company having a capital of $1,250,000, which sells 40,000 Lins annu ally, and has the most extensive works cf tho kind m Great Britain, which have been in operation 24 years. Tho Lan«jdale, therefore, has a good pedigree and is no experiment. It contains a larger proportion of chemical elements suited for tho promotion of vegetable life, and especially of cotton, than any other fertilizer offered in the South. It is the best and safest Cotton Manure iu the market. The analysis given with the Manure when sold will bo guaranteed. There shall be no mistake about the genuineness of the article, nor the good faith of the vendors. It is tho cheapest Manure offered, as it contains nothing but what is of use in becoming plant-food, or by chemical action on tho soil, producing tlio same. The test of cheapness is not the price, but the actual worth of the article purchased Low-priced Manure cannot contain efficient quantities of pure and valuable chemi cals, which can alone give woith to a fertilizer, and bring satisfactory results. The Langdale is as low in price as is consistent with the use of tho best ingredients, and a fair commercial profit on its cost. The employment of powerful machinery in mixing and pulverizing the ingre dients prepares every particle for service, and prevents trouble in using. The Lang dale is unequalled in this respect, and impresses every one who sees it os a perfectly manipulated Manure. In its composition and preparation it is the result of careful scientific research and experiment, confirmed by practical application for a quarter of a century. It will be maintained at its present high standard, and is thus what planters have long wanted —a thoroughly reliable and safe Manure.
