Central railroad time, and will meet the incoming night train from Eufuula, at the rock mill junction. It will arrivo at Cauiak at 10:55 a. m. This change is for the accommodation of passengers arriving on tho Southwestern train, who will change at tho junction, instead of arriving in tho city just after the Macon and Augusta train has left. The Mayor’* Court. The Mayor was again nbsent from his court yesterday morning, and Alderman Cornell again supplied his place upon tho )*«nch. Thera woro throe cases to ho ad judicated. A Mr. Dryant was booked for a sirnplo drunk. Ho did not appear in proper person to answer, but the five dollar bill which he hail collateral*'! nn.tworrd for him very well. It was swept into the city treasury with a promptitiido that in dicated its welcome, George Kent was up to answer for a plain drunk. His red foco indicated that the case liad boon a severe ono to him, nnd ho was let off with the usnal fivo dollars. A baggage matter on ono of the rail roads quit baggage smashes Monday afternoon and took to brandy smashes, or their equivalent, no didn’t come up to answer tho charge of being drunk, but if ho will bring np a fivo dollar bill ho can got tho pistol which is now in tho hands of tho Chiof of Police. Some four or fivo other names that ought to have been registered woro not upon docket. Yesterday was one of those rare days when the attention of the Court was nolely occupied by whito persons. llcnth of liiiKcnc Jr Hers. Mr. Eugene Jeffers, an old fireman and a gallant Confederate soldier during tho war, died Monday night, a few minutes post cloven o’clock, of pneumonia. Ho had been in feeble health for some t ime, still bis death was so unexpected as to causo a foaling of deepest grief in tho hearts of his many friends. Mr. Jeffers was ono of the oldest mem bers of tho Macon Firo Department, and ono of tho best firemen in tho city. He sorvod two terms ns Assistant Engineer of the Department. At the time of bis death he was a member of No. 3. Ho served during the late war as Lieutenant in the Thomson Guards, aud was one of tho bravest men in the army. Ho was true as stool to tho Southern cause, nnd never was known to flinch in tho hour of greatest peril, or to be laggard nn instant when his services were needed. His com pany was attached to the Gist Georgia regiment, lie was captured at the battle of Spotsylvania Conrt-house, and re mained n prisoner until tho oloso of tho war. no was a man of quiet habit, who made many friends and retained them. If lie had an enemy among all his ac quaintances the fact was not known. Tho announcement of his death was re ceived with universal expressions of grief. nis funeral will take place this after noon nt three o’clock, nnd will bo attend ed by all the Odd Fellows Lodges in the city, and the entire Fire Department; also by the surviving members of the Thomson Guards who tuny be in tho city. Tlic County Court. “Dr." John Hall, a colored practitioner of tlu> healing art, was brought before Judge 'Weems yesterday, on the charge of practicing medicine without a license or a diploma, and for malpractice. The " doctor” in his practice appears to have had ono sovereign remedy for all manner of human ailments. No matter what might bo the disease to which, ho was called to administer, he bathed the pa tient in kerosene oil, and Administered a dose of the same oil internally. It is as serted that some patients have been silly enough to die under lus treatment, which caused some apprehension in tho minds of his patrons, and the result was his ar rest. He was unable to give bail for his appearance on Thursday, and the conse quence is his -patients ran go The old round-about way io the regions below" •without tho aid of kerosene to light them on their way, w bile he languishes in the county jail to await trial. The penalty for practicing medicine without license is $500 fine, one-half of which goes to the informer. The County Court has now boon in op eration sir months. During that time it has disposed of" more than a hundred criminal eases, in only three of which •were juries demanded. It has also dis posed of one hundred and eight civil cases, m*t ono of which ha- been certiora- ried, and appeals have been taken in only throe. Two of tho latter were eases in which judgment was rendered by de fault. Had not the County Court been in ex istence all the above <su>es would have gone before tho Superior Court, and a juiy would have been necessary in each case. This gives the public some idea of what an enormous expense is saved to the county by the operations of the C<vuflty Court. BLACKS. A. Phillips, near high bridge Macon and Western railroad, sent to hospital. Green Walker, cornc-r Malison and Wharf streets, sent to hospital. Levi Reese, railroad junction, sent to hospital. Maria Tharpe, comer Washington av enue and College street, sent to hospital. Mary Roswell and six children, railroad junction, sent to hospital. That make a total of seven white per sons and clcvc-n colored. Mr. A. S. Bates, Mrs. Ingalls and Miss Murphy had only light cases of varioloid. Mr. Bates re covered some weeks ago, and the two la dies are so lightly affectod that they can scarcely bo said to be ill at all. Dr. Mason, since the first appearance of the disease, has exercised the strictest vigilance in hunting up coses and seeing that they were cither properly quaran tined or removed to tho hospital. The other physicians in the city have given him nil possible assistance, and have withheld no information that was neces sary to the public health. Officer Simp son was detailed as special policeman, subject to tho order of tho doctor, to whom ho reports twico a day. Ho visits regularly all those who arc quarantined, and when cases recover or are removed, attends in person to tho proper cleaning of tho premises, no, too, is duly vigi lant in the discharge of his duty. Thus it is that alljduc precaution is taken to prevent a spread of tho disease, and people abroad may rely upon it that there is no epidemic of small-pox here. They can visit Macon as usual with im punity, and if there should over be ft con dition of affairs hero which would render it unsafe for them to do so they can rely upon getting prompt information of the fact through tho TEi.Kar.ArH and Mf.s- sbnokb. But until there is some real causo of danger wo do not think it neces sary to sound any false notes of alarm. The mark Crook. To-night the people of Macon are to take their first peep at the mysteries of tho wonderful Jllaelc Crook, which is to bo exhibited hero in all of its grand scenic paraphernalia. Having nevor witnessed tho representation, we have no opinion of our own os to ita merits, but the press elsewhere are most liberal in its commen dation. Tho Richmond, Vo., Journal, speaking of tho performance in that city, says: Bidwell & McDonough’s grand specta cle called " Tlio Black Crook,” but very modestly draped, was produced lust night before a splendid house. It is by far the best thing in tho scenic, spectacular, ar tistic, and mechanical lines ever produced in Richmond. Aside from the legitimate merits of tho entertainment, tlio inter ludes thrown in to give it spico and va riety are of the most pleasing, as well as amusing character. The dancing of Mile. Lupo was most fascinating nnd beautiful, not to say wonderful. We have rarely seen so finished a dsta—m and the au dience were wild with delight at her graceful and sylph-like movements. She was supported by a full corpse tie ballet of very beautiful and charming young ladies, all of whom woro quite respecta ble Wliski. The various changes of •dress in which tho ballet corps appear— first tho regular peasant, then the cory phee, next as sailors, and last as wajrors in magnificent armor—all added to the interest and completeness of tho enter tainment. Then there was that wonderful child, ‘•Baby Bensonand we aro free to de clare we never have seen precocious talent before. She is, indeed, an enfant terrible, and can only be appreciated when seen. A description of tlio cherubic little sprite is simply impossible, and the sensation sho created in tho audience is equally in describable. Then we had Hernandez and his amus ing as well as wonderful performances. The burlesque of the Japanese, liko “By ron’s Dream,” was not alt burlesque. In deed, a more daring feat could not well have been conceived than that performed by them on the trapeze. But the humor of everything Hernandez does is quite irresistible. In every respect it U a splendid enter tainment, and we saw nothing offensive in any portion of it—nothing that should prevent the most fastidious from its full anA treo enjoyment. Another Bear. The most ingenious piece of mechanism we have seen lately is a toy bear at Jacob Dinklor’s confectionery and toy store, on Mulberry street. The animal moves about and growls as natural as life. The children should all go to see it. Mr. Dinkier has just opened an entirely now .'took of toys, confectioneries and Christ mas goods, to which he invites tlio espe cial attention of Santa Clans. Agent of the Macon and Augusta Railroad. Judge James Hoge, a well-known citi zen of the State, and an experienced rail road man, has been appointed agent of the Macon aud Augusta railroad at this point. The appointment will prove a most acceptable one to the people when they come to know the Judge. The McLaughlln-Goodall Case. Tho following note from Col Ruther ford explains itself, and corrects a misap prehension that was likely to have grown out of a paragraph in this paper of Sun day morning: Editors Telegraph and Messenger: I see it stated editorially in your Sunday’s issue that the law case, “ The Trustee of Mrs. McLaughlin and her children vs. IVm. I\ Goodall, administrator,” was | ended. This is a mistake. The case is • not ended. The Judge, after much besi- ' tation, took a certain view of the case "ill'll he told the jury would control | their finding in this suit—while he clearly if not expressly conceded that he did not thereby decide against the legal right of Mrs. McLaughlin's heirs to recover. But the case will go to tho Supreme Court on that technical point thus ruled by the Judge. John Ruthekfobd. December 1873. dec? lOt W. T. Nelson, T. C. Funs! Funs! Funs!—Tho prettiest stock in Macon.
