The physicians yesterday found it necesaary to amputate tlio arm of War ren Tharp, which was injured in tlio flying horses Tuesday night. Tho limb was taken oil just below tho elbow, and tlio boy is doing ns well ns could be ox- pectoil under tlie circumstances. It was thought nt first that it would bo neces sary to amputate only two fingers and a portion of liis hand, but Ilia nrm was found to Is: so badly injured that the whole of it, almost, had to lie taken off. Niunll-l'ox. No now case of enmll-pox or varioloid lias lioon reported in about n week. The last east* developed was a very light ono of varioloid, in tho Academy of tho Blind. This easo is so mild that the patient, a young girl of thirteen f o four!con, has not boon confined to her bed She is properly quarantined in tlio building, and every euro taken to prevent her coming in con tact with the other inmates. Tho author ities or tho Academy have very properly liung out tlio rod flag. Thero is not now, nor lias there been, any alarm in the oily about the disease. Tito cases that lravo occurred have run through a space of two months, or more; licnco thero ha? never boon many cases at any ono time. Conference. The usual preparations for tho meeting of Conference in this city have Kvn going on for somo time, and tho brethren, when they nrrivo here, will find that tho minis ters who reside in Macon have mndo every arrangement necessary for their comfort. Tho Conference, including both the ministers nnd lay delegates, will number about two hundred person!. The oeca- iiion will bring to tlio city quilo a number of eminent divines, besides a number of visitors; heneo tlie probability is that tlie city will ho pretty well filled with visit ors for a week, commencing next Wednes day. The election of delegates to tlie Gen oral Conference, which will meet in Louisville, Kentucky, next May, will form part of tho kasiness of tho session. A'ohr In Hie Gallery. The most annoying tiling to people who visit Ralston Hall is tho furore of noise that is kept up almost without cessation hy the c rowd of negroes and boys who frequent the gaRerica. They horrify every one with a series of hoots, howls, shrieks, whistles, stamp?, yetis, acreecbefc grunts, lnlloo.?, and every other imagina ble noise that could contribute to the erection of a horrible hullaballoo. This is not at long intervals, but so frequent as to l>o almost incessant. It destroys tho pleasure of tho io who go to seethe play, and it is not un£roqnsnt]y of such a character as to be grossly offensive to ladies. This sort of business ought to be stopped, an.l tiro galleries ought to be compelled to behave a? genteelly as tlio gentlemen in the dress circle, accompa nied by ladies, do. The police are stead ily at their posts in the gallery, and are watchful os they could be expected to be ; but owing to the fact that the gallery is usually crowded, they cannot ascertain the precise parties who are guilty of creating this disturbance. There is but one way to suppress this reprehensible conduct, and that is for the police to clear the ont i ro gallery once, send ing out the whole crowd. That would bo certain to get out the right parties, and white somo innocent one would suffer for one ntglit, it would teach tho others a lesson that would, liereaftcr, put the gal lery on its good holiavior. If it wero onoe known that tho gallery would be cloared on account of tho noise, thero would bo no diiteulty in singling ont of fenders, as those who go thither to soe tho play, would point out tlio disturbers of the peace, ratherthan forfeit the pies ure for which they have paid. In regard to tlio hand, and tho separ ate performances of individual members thereof, wo can only repeat what wo said yostorday. Tho entire band, in their showy grenadier uniform, paraded through tlio streets yesterday morning, giving tho publlo a vory lino serenade. Tho Crook goes lienco to Atlanta. Stir Novels. From Messrs. H. N. McKinney it Co., Philadelphia, through Messrs. J. IV. Burke & Co., wo have received tho fol lowing now novels “ The Stmgglo for Existence." A ro mance, after tho German of Itobort llyr. By Auber Forostior.. This a very beau tiful and chastily written story of Gor man public and social life. It involves no great amount of intricate plot, includ ing a fair proportion of blood and mur der. but is a plain narrative of imaginary events, introducing somo good character, and a serie.? of graphic and pleasant scones which arc not without wholesome moral influence. Tho book is a vory readable one. “Tlio House on tho Heights.” By Harriet B. MeKeover. Tlio author of this book is popularly known through her books. Tlie ono before us is a charming story of domestic life, representing, as tlio grand idea, tho influence of religion upon tlio human heart, and the good that ono or two holy people may do in a community. Tho story is a very quiet one, presenting nothing that borders upon the tragic, but i3 a narrative of precisely such events a? may cccur every day. It is ono of tboso books that is road with tho Mnsil ilities rather tlian with intellect, and la none tho lea* enjoyable on that account. [Communicated.] A Cninplnlnt from Mouth Macon. 3fr. Local: Will you allow mo spaco enough in yonr paper to inqnire why it is that Third street, below the Second Bap tist church, is left in such dangerous con dition? The large sewer crossing tho street near St. Barnabos Chapel, is in a frighful ‘•ouditiou and ha? been so for somo time. Now why is this portion of tho city so sadly neglected ? A largo number of tho working people live beyond this danger ous wash, and are compelled to pass this place a fter dart, and in doing so they en danger themselves to the breaking of a limb,or perhaps tlicir neck. Will not tho authorities investigate tlie mailer, and oblige tho tax-payers of South Macon by having this sewer re paired before some serious mishap occurs ? J. D. S. READING NOTICES.
