The City Council has reooiuded its re
cent act ion respecting barber shops, and
tlu-y will bo permitted to beep open on J
Sunday as heretofore. The former reso- |
lotion of oouncQ created a great deal of
unhappily-'* in the city. A great many
men love to shave on Sunday, because
they have nothing especial to do on that
day, hence the action of the barbers in
closing the shops on Sunday* 1-ore heavi
ly upon them. But thcr can feel happy
a Min now, and ;a and shave on Sunday
A3 heretofore.
But IVoodliff, notwithstanding this
child’* play on tho part of the City
Council, has determined not to open his
shop on Sunday. He will kirep open un
til twelve o’clock Saturday night, for the
benefit of his customers, but after that
hour bis shop - ill be closed until Monday

This Society met at Masonic Hall, as
usual, Thnrsday night, for practice. Un
der tho direction of Prof. A. N. Whitney,
Chorus Master, tlie Society liavo taken
up tho 42d psalm, by , nnd are
vigorously pushing forward.
After next Thursday night, there will
bo no more solos, either vocal or instru
mental, except a* they occur in tho piece
for rehearsal.
The Society purposes giving a concert
some time in January next.
Immediately after the practice on
Thursday night, Mr. Arthur L. Wood
played Warren’s “Danco of the Fairies.”
It was rendered with much correctness
and especial expression, and was warmly
encored. Miss Carrie Boifcuillot sang
•'3.1 True,” a very sweet and pleasing
waltz song, in good stylo and time, and
Mrs. Ogden brought tin- evening’s enter
tainment to a close with an exquisite op
eratic selection, rendered in true artistic
style. Messrs. Williams and Reynolds
saug, respectively, “The Bell Ringer” nnd
"The Old S'i'Xton," and were deservedly
applauded.
At a business meeting, held later,
eighty-five associate members of tho
society were reported, with a good chance
for one hundred and fifty, and thus the
“Harmonies” stand on a firm footing.
During tliis month tho society will
probably decide to rent Masonic Ilall for
the year, and' buy tho Concert Grand
“Cliiekering,” which they have been
using, from Guilford, Wood A Co. We
wish them an unlimited membership and
a full exchequer.

Tlio traveller accustomed to visiting
Atlanta know* full well, from dismal ex
perience, tho lac'k of good hotel accom
modation* in tho Capital of Georgia.
'Die Kimball House is a magnificent pile,
it i* true, but most visitors would prefer
les* style and pretention, and more solid
comfort than they can obtain in tho
"IT. I.” palace. Tho National nnd other
hotel* also offer no very special induce
ment* to the public, and hence the fact
that tho first-class restaurants of Atlanta
are so largely patronized.
Tho wayfarer, worn and weary, upon
arriving, has simply to cross over from
the depot to Thompson's hospitable rooms,
anti in a trice lie is modo to feel perfectly
at homo, and a nice fire, tlie latest news
paper*, attentive waiters and a gonial
host are ready to minister to his want*.
Take up tho bill of fare, nnd there ho will
find a long array of tho most tempting
delicacies in the shape of game, fish,
Norfolk oysters, birds, fresh eggs, and
almost any other dish that the most fas
tidious epicure can call for. These are
cooked to a turn, furnished with every
condiment and addendum tlie mostdoli-
cate palate could desire, and served secun-

Members of tho Legislature and tran
sient visitors who can secure sleeping
accommodations elsowhere, would do well
to take all their meals nt Thompson’s.

HOG SLAUGHTERING.
Big Work at O. W. Tkonsv A Co.’s
Bren tlie Louisville Courier-Journal, Dec. l.j
Most person* have but a very small
j idea of the immense amount of work done
at one of our mammoth pork houses in a
short time; tho number of hogs killed
and the large bulk of meat packed in ono
week would astonish even those who
think they are acquainted with the work
performed by the employes in one of these
establishment*. During the five days of
the week closing last night the wotk done
at the extensive pork house of O. W.
Thomas A Co. has been immense'. Since
Tuesilay they have killed 8,516 hogs, or
a little over an average of 1,700 per day.
It would be interesting, as well a* amus
ing, to many to see the will with which
Denton, tlie scolder, rushes the hogs
through the tub well scalded to the scra
pers, who pass thorn to the shovers, then
to the gutters, splitter, tho lard lifters,
and on around until the dead hog* are
placid on the slides to hang until tho
next day, when they aro cut and put
down in salt. The work at the slaughter
house begins at 7 o’clock in tho morning,
and closes at 5 in the evening, giving
nine hours to tho day, so that the sum-
!>er of hogs slaughtered per hour is nearly
two hundred.
In the packing house the hogs ore cut
the day after they are killed, work gen
erally beginning at 71 o’clock in the
morning and ending at 3 in the after
noon, so that the number of hogs cut
each hour in the day is about 225. Yes
terday morning, in fifty minutes, Bayes
and George Ogden, the two regular cut
ters, cut 216 nogs, and up to noon cut
the unprecedented number of 1300, the
actual time of cutting being but little
over four hours. All the hams of this
number of hogs were trimmed by Thomas
Ogden, and the shoulders by Bower Og
den and C. P. Bailey. To see the smooth
