New Books.
From Messrs. Brown & Co, wo have re.

‘•Rhoda Thornton's Girlilhood.” By
Mary E. Pratt—Lee A Shepherd, Boston.

G. W. Corlcton A Co., Now York.
"Threading My Way.” An autobio
graphy. By Robert Dalo Owen. G. W.
Carleton A Co., New York.
The authorship of tho last named book
attache* to it somo importance, and will
beget a iil>eral sale for it. Mr. Owen is
one of tho most respected as well as one
of the ablest of tho exponents of spiritual
ism ; and in spite of the pernicious doc
trines which be liolus. be is an agreeable
writer and reasons out his propositions
with a cunning that amounts almost to
profundity. Ho is an intelligent man,
has hail largo experience in the world,
and as tlie book is a narrative of bis own
life, it probably contains somo interest
ing views of tho men and women tliat ho
lias met and tho manners and customs of
tho countries; that ho has visited.

The degree of confidence and patron

Although Messrs J. W. Burke & Co.
have barely begun to roceivo and open
their holiday goods, their stock already
surpasses what tlio public expected they
would do in this line. They received
nothing until within the past four or five
days, and now tlioy have in their store an
immense stock of most superb holiday
pres. nta, suitable for people of all ages,
and largo and small means.
Their stock of holiday books is very
large, and embraces many entirely new-
one), some of which are the perfection of
tho printer’s and the engraver’s arts.
They are gotten up in tho m03t elaborate
style, ns respects printing, illustration
and binding. Besides this, they are
1 looks of standard valne, and will bo ns
good a generation hence ns they aro now.
They have an unusually large stock of
writing desks, work boxes, jewel cases,
toilet articlos, gold and ivory pencils, and
a great variety of other articlos that it
would weary an encyclopedist to enum
erate. Their stock of bibles and prayer
books is tho largest and handsomest ever
brought to Macon.
For the boys they bavo a vast number
of tool chests of various sizes, wheelbar
rows. wagons, and a great variety of in
teresting and curious toys and puzzles,
and an unlimited stock of tnybooks. For
tho little girls they liavo doll carriages,
paper dolls, beautifully illustrated juve
nile books, and an endlong somber of
other articles wldcli will open tho eyes
of tho misses wider than a first-rate
ghost story would.
But no description can giro any ade
quate idea of the beauty and oxtent of
this stock. It resembles panic times os
little as a snow-drift resembles “a bonk
whore tho wild thyme grows.” To lie
fully appreciated tlio stock must bo ex
amined.
The Mayor’s Court.
nis Honor, tho Mayor, found eight
names on his docket yesterday morning,
three of .which wero tho names of white
persons and tho remainder of colored per
sons.
Thomas Mcnor, colored, was tho first
called, raid he answered to tho charge of
burglary. Ho is notorious in Macon as a
thief, but somehow or other he was never
fairly caught until now. A lady’s gold
watch and chain were found in his pos
session, and ho confessed to entering sev
eral houses and stealing various articles
therefrom. Ho was transferred to the
County Court.
Ella Middlebrooks stole six dollars from
one of her colored friends. The money,
os described by tho loser, was found in
Ella’s hosiery and returned to the owner,
and Ella was fined five dollars, or ten day*
in the barracks.
Lucy Mills, an old East Macon offend
er, who is frequently boforo his Honor
was fined five dollars or ton days for
stealing a pint of whisky. Sho says it
was the most exponsivo whisky sho ever
enjoyed.
A young blood plead guilty to a plain
drunk, and was subjected to tho usual
fiuu.
Robert Caldwell was gathored from a
goods box upon the street, at a late hour
night before last, and was furnished
closer lodgings in the barracks, for fear
he might take cold. Fire dollars or ton
days wits tlie judgment entered against
him.
A negro woman gave a butcher some
of her “imperenco” and he slapped her
jaws for her. She had him before His
Honor and ho was flood five dollars for
striking her. I r . ' I
Teaberry Newly and Milton Miller were
up for fighting. They hod a sharp scuf
fle Friday evening, and tho former mak
ing a bludgeon of an ale bottle, rapped
Miller on the head with it, and Miller, in
turn, struck Newly a blow with a stick
which needed only a little more force to
make it fatal. They were fined five dol
lars each.

T IIS Oil is manufactured by us on the sea
shore with tlio greatest care, from fresh
healthy Livers of tlw Cod only, without tlio aid
of any chemicals, by tlio simplest possible process
and lowest temperature, by which the Oil can be
separated from the cells of the livers. It is nearly
devoid < f color, odor, and flavor, having only a
bland, fish-like,and to most persons, not unpleas
ant taste. It is so sweet anil pure tliat it can be
retained by the stomach when other kiuds fail,
and jxiticuU soon become to liko if.
The secret of making good Cod Liver Oil lies in
tlie projier application of tho proper degree of
heat;'too much or too little will seriously injure
the ouality. Great attention to cleanliness is also
absolutely necessary to prodi re sweet Cod Liver
Oil. Tho rancid oil generally found in market is
the product of mapufacturcrs who are carele

It is with tho truest sorrow that we are called

' I used yours by tho side of two high-priced
manures, and it did hotter than either.
B. F. WARD.
After using 70 tons this year, I prefer yours oven
at tlio same price of tho expensive manures.
L. M. HOUSER, Houston county.
Yours produced as well or bettor than others at
loss than half tlie cost.
W H ROBINSON, Macon county;
Yours produced as well as tho Chiueha Island
and tho two other high-pricuri which I used this
year. C A HAMILTON, Jones county.
Yours is us good as the expensive kinds I used
this year; some think better.
J H McCAY, Talbot county.
Your fertilizer, on two years* trial, has provon
to be m good os any other fertilizer I ever used,
and I shall use it alone hereafter.
J M SPINLIN, Fayette county.
It lias proved to bo just as good, and in some
respects superior, to tub most expensive manures.
I desire to use it extensively next year.
HBNRY J WILLIAMSON, Griflin, Ga.
It is as good as the expensivo sort that I used.
I shall use it altogether next season.
J W PERRY, M D, Clay county, Ga,
I used a ton of tho “Home-Made” by two of tlio
expensive guanos, and find no difference in the
yield. I can heartily recommend it as a cheap
and paying fertilizer—shall use it exclusively noxt
year. JNO H BUTLER, Monroe county.
Barnb8Tille. Ga., October 8,-1873.
I used your compound again this year, and am
so well pleased with it that I don’t think I shall
overuse any other kind. Where I used 300 pounds
per acre I will make 8,000 pounds of seed cotton
to tho acre. I used it on turnips this year; they
are the finest I ever saw. I think tne farmers
will be satisfied, after this year’s trial, that it is
the best in use. Yours respectfully,
J P McLEAN.
Spalding County, Ga., October 16.1873.
I used your “Home-Made Fertilizer” this year
on cotton and com. in tho same quantities with
one of the high-pricked manures, and the advan
tage is decidedly with tho “Home-Made.” I have
decided to use it exclusively next year.
EDWARD M DORSEY.
SUNNYBlDi, Ox, October 23, 1873.
After a fair test by the side of three high-priced
and stan«lard commercial manures, it is plain
that tho “Home Made” is as good ns auy, and I
can conscientiously commend it to lb > farmers as
the host ami cheapest they can use.
J O A MILLER.
Mausiialvillk, Ga , October 2L 1873.
Dr. P. Jt. Molt:
Dear Sir—1 used this season thirty-six tens of
your “IIomc-Modo Fertilizer,” and am so well
pleased with it tliat I shall use it almost or quite
exclusively noxt year. I applied it M the rate of
75 to 150 pounds per acre with satisfactory results.
Yours truly, W H FELTON.
Terrel County, Ga., October 20,1873.
I usod this year the Homo-Mad*' Fertilizer of
Hunt, Rankin A Lamar.ou corn and cotton. The
fertilizer was manipulated with ten earth. My
land is light and n&ndy. We nppluxl it ia a.rtel»l
on cotton alternately with tlio Son Fowl, equal
a u&ntitios of each,- and never discover any
ifferenoo in* the two. Wo used it on com and
find tho Home-Made decidedly the best. Where
wo put the Home-Made the corn retained a rich
green color up to maturity.
