W hen tho first alarm of fire was sounded Sunday night, a number of tho students of Mercer University started to run to the seene of the conflagration! ' The Missionary Anniversary, On Sunday, in the Fast Macon Metho dist church, woa nn occasion of inoro than ordinary interest. A good congregation was prvMont, and the exercises were of a very pleasing character. Tho singing was good, and the address of Prof. W. C. Bass m able and in every respect ap propriate tot h-co .-asion. Bitjavaa listened to with the most otientiVo interest by every one present; most of whom thought the address entirely too short. After tho address, tho i*Vjjral .classes, aa they were called, went np anil present ed their coutribntiom to tho missionary fund. The suur of fourteen dollar* was raised in that manner, after which quite n number of persons were made life mem bers of tho society by the payment of three dollars each. Wo suppose tlie en tire collection amounted to between forty and fifty dollars, which was first-rate. We think Mr. .Lockwood has been do ing* good work this year in his Sunday- schools os well os in his congregations. The Major's Court. Half a do.-on names were upon the Mayor's docket yesterday morning, and os many persons cauic up to answer to tbe various charges set down against them. Tbo first name called was John Griffin, unda stately individual, upon whoso cheeks and brow the results of a bigdruuk wore blooming, arose and plead guilty to the charge of being drunk. Five dollars or ten days was the judgment. llemy Mitchell, colored, was up on tho charges of disorderly conduct and resist ing an officer, Ilenrv drank some Satnr- This firo was also tlie work of an in cendiary. Tho building was unoccupied —the last tenant having left it last Fri day. Parties returning from the first fire had not passed it twenty minutes before it was covered with flames, and there was no sign of fire thereabouts when they passed. The suddenness with which the flames sprung up, nnd tho great rapidity with which they spread, indicated that krroseno oil was also used in firing it. But for tho prompt and vigorous action of the firemen, two or more of tho adja cent buildings would have been burned. Tho building was a six room cottage, and Mr. Tincy estimates its worth to have been lietwoen cloven and twelve hundred dollars. It was insured for sir hundred dollars. This was fire excitement enough for one night, hut it was not all. Shortly after threo o'clock tlie alarm was again sbunded, and again was tho city illumi nated by tho glare of a rapid conflagra tion. This time tho fire was at the trian gular block at tho intersection of Arch, Third and Oglethorpe streets, in a build ing that has not for a long time been oc- ! copied. It was originally built for-a car penter's shop. A few years ago it was itaod by tho colored Baptists as a house of worship, while their church on Second street was in process of construction. The building belonged to Mr. E. C. Gr.ir.nlis. It was old and dry, and burned very rapidly, hence tho fire was hardly discovered before the flames had full sway. This building was very near the engine house of fire company No. 4, j and as a cistern was also near nt hand, i that . b amer soon had the flames under | its control. An adjacent dwelling homo I was considerably charred, but was saved j from destruction by tho timely efforts of the firemen. T-ho family which occupied the residence removed a large proportion «f their furniture; hut the result proved that to have been unnecessary. The loss in thi., instance was not very great. A lady who lived near by saw the torch applied to this building. She saw the in cendiary in tlio very act of firing it, and saw him run off, throwing the torch back a; lie ram lie was probably tho same rascal who had already liod a hand in firing the other buildings. Of course ho was too far off to bo identified. Tho lady awoke her son at once, and he ran out and ) gave tlie :darm. Otherwise it would prob ably hr.vo been impossibles to have saved tho residence. These fires afforded the first opportu nity thnt has occurred for testing tho practical working capacity of the two Harrell .t Ilayes engines lately purchased by companies Nos. 2 and 4. No machines could have done better work than they did. A dozen men drew No. 4 from the engine house over the very roughest part of the city to the fire, and by the timo ta«v were there, steam was np, and it was ready for action.
