Few men in any age have become so distinguished in scientific attainments, and fewer still liavo borne tlieir distinction with such guile les3 grace. Prof. Agassiz was nearly G7 years of ago. Up to his present illness, howovor, he has been very robust. Hois a native of Switzerland, where bo early distinguished himself as a student of medicine and tho experimental science. His work entitled "Studies or Glaciers” attracted the attention of geologists on account of the new theory presented on that subject, and gave him a great Euro pean reputation. In 1S4G Agassiz came to this country, and in 1S-17 was appointed professor of zoology and geology, in the scientific school at Cambridge, which po sition he still retains. Ho has in the meantime visited and collected zoological specimens in every portion of the Atlan tic and Gulf coasts, Brazil and the val ley of iUv A«ui,nti, the valley of the Mis sissippi. and the great plains at tlio L.ssc of the Rocky mountains, and has had col lectors at work gathering for him all land and marine animals on the Pacific coast. TTia collections of minerals, plants, and fossils far exceed in extent any others over made in America, and in most par ticulars surpass those of any European cabinet or museum. Ho has published numerous works of great value, rich with the scientific fruits of his travels and in vestigations. Ho has been latterly_en gaged under the auspices of the Unite ! States Government in making a complete investigation of the deep sea bottom of tbo Gulf stream, and also in founding tho scientific school at Pennikese Island. Tho New York Tribune, referring to tbe career of Prof. Agassiz, says : "It is the fortune of but few men to assist so greatly in the progress of the day. Tho extraordinary impulse which his individual efforts hire given to the pursuits of science can scarcely yet be calculated; they belong to no one de partment of research, and are just begin ning to show ther magnitude. As an opponent of the development theory of of creation, ho ha3 liad the sympathies of all who are wedded to the more ancient forms of belief, as well as of that large majority who are awaiting the issue of a conflict in which neither side has as yet an undisputed victory. ■ It cannot be de nied that with him the anti-Darwinians will lose their most able champion.” OH MEDICINE, Is harmless.
