D., then addressed tho Conference in tho interest of the Book Concern, detailing in full its finan cial condition, and asking for relief through the instrumentality of the mem hers of this and other Southern Confer ences. Ho had already visitod tho Con ferences and had met with encourage ment everywhere. It is a happy relief to have such an ad dress os that of Dr. Bedford’s slipped in botween the ordinary routine of Confer ence proceedings. No man can make a clearer or moro interesting statement of fact- than he can; and no man can so well enliven his address with agrceablo touches of humor. Tho gravest of the divines had to smile audibly several times while the Doctor was talking. At the close of this address Conference proceeded to examinations under Question 2—“Who remain on trial?” Tho charac ter of tho following named gentlemen were passed and they remained on trial: Albert MeCay Williams, Wilbur F. They moan exactly what they say about panic prices. They have tho goods and intend to soil them, and want only a small profit, as the times aro hard aud^iuoney scarce. They want tho people to come and look nt the goods, whether they buy or not. The goods are arranged conveniently for examination, and tho prieo is plainly marked in figures on each article. A reduction of ten per cent, from those prices will bo made on all bills of five dollars and over. They do not expect everybody to buy, as the goods would not go around; but they invite all to come and seeand admire. Their store is open eveiy night for tho benefit of those who cannot go there during tlio day. While they have sold very many goods, their stock hardly seems to be broken, and some of tlio handsomest ar ticles they hare lead aro still on their counters. Narrow Escape. One of Ward’s wood fiats struck a rock nnd sunk in tho river above tho city Tuesday night, having on hoard several men, among them Mr. Jack Herrington. All the men except Mr. II. jumped over board and swam ashore, and tho last they saw of the tint it was going down tho j river and sinking with him on board, j Hearing nothing of him after they had I reached the shore, they supposed he had gone down with the fiat, and they come i to the city and so reported, and parties went out immediately to seek for him. It turned out, however, that Mr. Herring ton was not drowned. Alter the boat had reached the bottom, the water was found to lx> just shallow enough to leave his head above the water, and he stood there until his call for help attracted the atten tion of a gentleman who lived near and went to his relief. When brought ashore lie was greatly benumbed with cold; hut a short while spent before a good fire put him all right; and the parties who went in search of him found him safe and scowl dicated short bo era may have time to get home to spend Christmas with their families. CONFERENCE PERSOVAL. The Conference is a very large body of men, and as far as we know the material, it is an intellectual and zealous body. The members appear to have assembled with their minds fixed upon business, and wo think nil due expedition will charac terize the proceedings. Among the distinguished ministers present who ore not members of the Con i’: ■.once, we noticed Bishops Pierce and Fame, Dr. Atticu3 G. Haygood, Sunday- school Secretary and editor of the Sunday- -eliool papers; Dr. A. H. Bedford, book agent, and Bev. James E. Evans, of Au- gu-to. Bev. Mr. Fitzpatrick, of the Bal timore Conference, nnd Eev. Mr. Lewis, of the St. Louis Conference, were intro duced by the Tiishop. They are here as visitors. Dr. A. G. Haygood preached at Mul- 1 vrry Street Church last night, nnd Kev. H. II. Turks at First Street Church. There was preaching also in the East Macon Church, but we did not learn by whom. Wo presume there will be preaching in all the churches every night while Con ference remains in session. Hancock, F. P. Brown. Crawfordville, T. J. Adams. Milledgeville. A- J. Jarrell. Baldwin, G. W.
