C. B. W. Memphis. Tenn., and Emigra tion to Arkansas. A gentleman of this city, who lias «{<ent most of the last ten years in the city of Memphis, semis us the following : " The article in your paper which as serted that the citizens of Memphis j drink the water conveyed throughout the j city from Wolf River is an error. The | citizens drink cistern water, or Missis- ! sippi River water; the water forced up I from Wolf River is for use in cose of fires. The water works ore lower than ' the city proper, and powerful steam en- [ gines are kept constantly at work forcing the water through the pipes. So power ful are these engines that when all their force is employed, a stream can be thrown through common rubber hose, from the street level to the top of the highest building, in the highest part of the city. But no one can too strongly express tho offence to the olfactories caused by the want of pr.per cleanliness and .-. w- erage in the g<*»! city of Memphis. I never in all my life saw a city where so much filth, garbage and manure were allowed to accumulate in alleys, streets and prirate yards, os was the ease in Memphis; and when 1 left it in June, !-1 ECLIPSES ALL OTHERS TEE GREAT REME2Y HOME PURPOSES. DUNCAN, JOHNSTON CO., Cotton Factors and General Com mission Merchants, 9% Bay Street, Savannah, Ca. augl 6m Planters It is a genuine English made Manure, the only one in the market, and manu factured by a company having a capital of $1,250,000, winch soils -10,000 tons annu ally, and lias the most extensive works of the kind in Great Britain, which have been in operation 21 years. The Longdalo, therefore, has a good pedigree and is no experiment. It contains a larger proportion of chemical elements suited for tho promotion of vegetable life, anil especially of cotton, tban any other fertilizer offered in the South. It is the best and safest Cotton Manure in tlio market. The analysis given with the Manure when sold will bo guaranteed. There shall be no mistake about tho genuineness of the article, nor tho good faith of tho vendors. It is tho cheapest Manure offered, as it contains nothing but what is of use in becoming plant-food, or by chemical action on the soil, producing the same. Tho test of cheapness is not the price, but the actual worth of tho article purchased. Low-priced Manure cannot contain efficient quantities of puro and valuable chemi cals, which can alono give worth to a fertilizer, and bring satisfactory results. Tho Langdalo is as low in price as is consistent with the use of tho best ingredients, aud a- fair commercial profit on it3 cost. The employment of powerful machinery in mixing and pulverizing the ingre dients prepares every particle for service, and prevents trouble in using. Tlio Lang- dalcis unequalled in this respect, aud impresses every one who sees it as a perfectly manipulated Manure. In its composition and preparation it is the result of careful scientific research and experiment, confirmed by practical application for a quarter of a century. It will be maintained at its present liigli standard, and is thus what planters have long wanted - a thoroughly reliable anil safe Manure. THE MODEL MANURE AND PLANTER’S FRIEND.
