Fritz confessed having in hia possession
a note given to Francis Widmer for the
sum of $2,500; also, n note of Head's,
late mail contractor, for $2,000, besides
other notes amounting to $2,500—nearly
enough in the aggregate to cover the re
ported amount for which Widmer de
faulted. Widmer'a administrator de
manded theso notes, and Fritz denied
having them, and the ca-e ugsiast him
rests on the clung* of making way with
paj>ers of value, etc. The case promise-,
to involve several officials in a serious
difficulty.

The market for cotton on spot opened strong
and buoyant in tho early part of the week, but
heavy receipts and tho decline in gold and foreign
exchange developed a weakness whit h culminated
in a decline, and the tendency of prices has been
downward for somo two or three days, the market
closing dull and weak.

110.8U0 were for contract and 12,445 for immediate
