Editors Telejniph and Mcssnujcr: To
day alnuit 12 o'clock the constable of this
place was ordered to arrest a negro man
by tbo name of Willis Rutherford, who
stoutly resisted, and drew a knife and
throntoned to cut the constable if ho
crowded him. He was told by tho omcer
that if he did not surrender ho would
shoot him. This did r.ot have any other
effect than to increase his threats, and he
dared the officer to shoot . whereupon the
otlieer tired nt him, the lead taking effect
in tho breast. It is thought that he will

Jew days ago by a follow bio k weighing
several hundred pounds, which had fallen
from the top of a cotton screw. He was
insensible for some time, and thaae who
witnessed the accident had uo doubt that
tho blow was a fatal one. It turns out,
however, that lti.s skull war not the least
fractured, and Ward is fast recovering.
This accident adds another link to the
chain of testimony in regard to the iron
clad condition of the Hamittc skull. Tho
fall of such :t block on the head of a white
beginning of the present fall term, and
the prospect is fair for a still larger at-
teri lau^e next term. The daughters of
tho ministers of the Conference are gra
tuitously educated at this college; and
they are also provided with board at
lower rates than are the daughters of or
dinary patrons of the school.

Rev. A. M. Wynn read tho report of the
Commission for Orphans’ Home. Th
commission was raised at tho bast session
of Conference for tho purpose of scouring
a locution for a home for orphans, to be
under the management and support of
tbo South Georgia Conference. Tho
commission consisted of Geo. C. Clark, A,
M. Wynn, J. W. Burke, Jno. AV. Jordon
and James Jackson.
Tho report announced tliat a location
for the Home litd been secured very near
Macon, nnd that the institution is now in
operation, with eleven orphans in it, all
happily provided for in the way of food
and raiment, nnd all being educated. Tho
location consists of 9t acres of land, 2G
acres of which is under fence. Thero is
on it a ten room house, a good orchard
and a first-rate vineyard. This property
as we understood tho report, was a dona
tion to the Conference, the only condition
being that it bo never diverted from tlio
purposes of a Home for the orphan chil
dren. The titles were properly made
out, and a charter secured from the Bibb
Superior! Court, all of which were pre
sented with the report. The buildings
have been repaired and painted, tho
fences put in good repair, and a large
garden enclosed.

Usods at Low Down Prices.
AVo invite attention to the advertise
ment of Messrs. AVaxelbaum ft Bro .who
are among the most enterprising mer
chants of Macon. They have converted
their entire establishment into a bargain
store, and haTc marked down everything
to the lowest panic prices. Having an
abandonee of capital to enable them to
Ink e advantage of everything that prom
ise., to lienefittheir customers, t hey entered
the New A'ork markets when the panic
had produced the greatest depression and
purchased largoly for cash. The result of
this is they have a very fine stock, which
they are able to sell, for cash, at prices
lower than huve prevailed inee the war.
The attention of the trade, wholesale
and retail, is called to their advertisement
and to their stock. They have both the
goods and the disposition to do all they
promise.
Total result for tho year $42,330
Besides those ho said he had the names
of many persons who ltad agreed to pay so
much a year as long as they lived. These
amounts could not well be aggregated.
The institution he said did dot owe
dollar.
The following were elected Board of
Trustees for the Orphans’ Home: S.
Anthony, A. M. AYvnn, Geo. C.- Clarke,
Jno. AY. Burke. A. L. Maxwell, J. O.
Braucli, Cosby A\\ Smith, J. AY. Jordan,
H. L. Jewett. J. W. Cheatham, AV. D.
AA’iHiams and James Jackson.
Mr. Anthony made a very earnest ad
dress in favor of the Home, making some
very interesting stattmonts in regard to
it. Besides the money contributions be
had mentioned in his report, he had re-
ccived a number of contributions of
clothing, bedding, and other necessaries,
which were greatly needed. One gentle
man had given him a bole of cotton for
mattresses. Tho cotton had been sold
and good mattresses purchased.
At the close of Mr. Anthony’s remarks,
AYm. A. AYilson, of Americas, announced
that he would give one acre of land to
the Home, which ho would have cultiva
ted. and would give the entire proceeds
each year to the Home.
liesolutions were adopted arranging
for fends to defray the expenses of the
ministerial anl lay delegates to the Gen
eral Conference.
Rev. Geo. (\ Clark presented the re-
port of the Special Committee on the
State of the Church. This was decidedly
the ablest document yet read before the
Conference. It was read by Judge Jack-
.--on. Pending its eonsideration the hour
of adjournment arrived, and the matter
was postponed.
After the usual announcements, Con
ference adjourned with tbo benediction
by Bishop Paine.

Rev. J. AV. Ilinton read tho report of
the Secretory.
Tho President introduced Dr. A. G.
Ilaygood, who delivered a most thrilling
address. He said the mission work was
of recent dute. Indeed, Dr. Lovick
Pierce was an ordained preacher before
the first missionary society was organ
ized. Now, there were fifteen thousand
ministers aud native helpers laboring in
heathen lands, and more than eight mil
lion of dollars annually expended.
Ilis spoeelt wrt3 brief, eloquent and full
of startling facts, calculated to inspire a
progressive movement into foreign fields.
Bishop Keener was introduced, who,
after a few brilliant gems of thought on
tho general missionary subject, gave the
audience a glowing description of the
mission work in Mexico and bis trip to
the capital, etc.
