Homicide nt Haddock's Ntatlon.
It i* reported that Davo Herrington
wo* shot and killed on Christmas ove, at
Haddock's station, by a man named Har
rison. The shooting was dono with a
double-barrel shot-gun. Wo were una

difficulty. Harrison, it i* stated, gave
himself up immediately after the shoot

The Masquerade.
The young folk* arc busy with their
preparations for tho forthcoming mas
querade. Tho indications nro that tho
entertainment will bo more brilliant than
any of its predecessor*. Nearly all the
young ladies and gentlemen in tho city
are busy selecting characters and devis
ing costume*. The work of distributing
invitations coiuiuoncod yesterday. This

Two m irrors belonging to the Masonic
Hall were carried oil Tuesday night by
parties wh » wore in .ttoada 10# upon tim -
calico ball. The parties who took these
glasies nro known, and they are request
ed to return them and thus save unpleas
ant publicity, which will fellow a failure
to do so. The fla' os belong to the lut.ll,
and tho managers of the party do hot
wish to replace them with money that
should go to the benefit of tho orphans.
Another Esrspfl from the Chain
Hang.
Another prisoner -uceoedeJ in effecting
his on cape from tlio chain gang night be
fore last, and is still at large. We do not
know how many have made their escapo
from tho gang, but the number nmounts
to about half of all who have been sen
tenced by the County Court. This thing
is getting to lie monotonous, and if sonic
arrangement :s not made for an efficient
guard for these prisoners it is worse than
Useless to send them out. It amounts to
so punishment at all, and is equivalent
to turning tho prisoners loose.
Street Improvement.
Since Mr. Gustin, our street contractor,
left the Tark two months ago, ho lias
made great improvements in Orange,
Arch, First, Second and Fourth streets,
in fact lia* put them in a better condi-
I tion than they ever were before.
I Heretofore, the water, during heavy
rains, accumulated in vast quantities on
j the hill in and about Orange street, and
in perfect torrents dashed down across
First nnd the streets below, washing deep
gullies across them, and frequently mak
ing them impassable. By means of a
system of ditches, sewer* and embank
ments, this immense sluice of water is
now diverted from running across First
street, and is carried safely through the
factory grounds to tho branch in the
rear, and is so conducted ont of the city.
Having thus provided against washes,
Mr. Gustin has proceeded to givo tho
streets a proper shape, providing for a
perfect drainage. Clay and gravel have
been added, which gives a hard smooth
surface cither in wet or dry weather.
This work is now going on, and in a few
•recks will bo completed, and it may be
safely affirmed that tho streets thus at
tended to will bo in better condition than
they have ever been.
During the recent rains Second street
ha* presented no standing ponds of water.
There is not the shadow of a wash upon
it anywhere, and the surface remains as
firm nnd smooth as could be desired.
Tho work will stand, because it is well
done.

I have Buffered tot eleraa years with
bronohitU so hadly that whenever I took
a slight cold I waa ooofiaed with pneu
monia, pleurisy and night sweat* fre
quently. I hare been using Dr. Jones'
treatment by inhaling the remedies now
seven days. I return home a well man.
If the afflicted had any idea of the abso
lute certainty of his cures, as I now feel,
they would pour in to him from far and
near. I know two of my neighbors that
Dr. Jones cured. I am a planter, aged
fifty-one years, lire near Appling, Colum
bia county, Ga.
Dr. Jones’ office at the Pulaski House,
in this city, is crowded with the best citi
zens of the State, from far and near, and '
we hare such testimony as the above
coining to us almost daily expressing
their gratitude to this skillful physician,
which we take pleasure in publishing.—
Savannah line*.
Dr. Jones will remain at the Pulaski
House. Savannah, Ga., until January ad.
He may be consulted at the Planters’
Hotel, Augusta, Ga., from the 4th to the
