Novelties In Note Paper.
Messrs. Drown & Co. present us with
some spociment of novelties in note pa-
per which they liavo just received. The
London rago is for note paper of an ob
long shape, turning down from the lop,
and with an extra fold onco over from
tho side fits a square envelope. The fa
vorite London tint is a brownish one,
while in Boston fawn oolor is most popu
lar, though ovory shndo if used. AU are
very elegant nnd unique.
Tho latest novelty, however, is chil
dren's note paper, with envelope* to
match, with a little flower or kitten in
stead of a monogram. This is in great
doinand, and tho juveniles nro rapidly
bocoming lotter-writors, in order that
they may liavo tho plcasuro of using this
paper.
Fatally Burned.
Hettio Solomon, a colored girl between
flvo nnd six years old, was fatally burned
yesterday afternoon, under tho following
circumstances i Ilor mother loft her at
homo for a short time, whilo sho went to
• deliver sorao clothes that sho lmd washed
for a neighbor who lived near by. AVhilo
tho mother was gone tho child ventured
too none tho fire, and her clothes wero
soon in n blaze, and wero burned almost
entirely off her liody before any one come
to hor rolief. Persons who lived near
heard tho screams of the child, hut paid
no attention thereto, thinking that her
mother was punishing her. Finally,
somo one who happened to bo passing
on the Opposite side of the street discov
ered that tho child was on fire and gave
tho alarm. In tho meantime tho mother
returned from her errand and soon had
tho Same* extinguished j hut all tho
lower part of the child’s body was so
badly burned that tho doctors liavo no
hope that she will recover. She was
alivo at a Into hour la -*. night nnd ration
al. Sho said she had gone to the firo to
warm herself when hor clothes caught,
Tho mother is confident that sho was not
absent five minutes. The father’s name
is llcnry Solomon, llo lives in one of the
rod houses in Dixie Row, on First street
near tho river.
The Mayor'* Court.
Inspired with the spirit of tho season,
Georgian* Allen and Sophie Lawrence,
a conjdo of colored votaresses of ten cent
saloons, got on a tear and called each
other exceedingly ugly names, and finally
each reported tho other to tho " perlieo.”
Sophie came up to an aver, and there
K ing no proof against her her case was
dismissed. Georgians did not come up,
and she was fined five dollars for con
tempt of court.
Ed. Cooper was up for fighting. Thi*
was a one-sided fight, as Ed. merely
raised a welt across tho head of a cotem-
porarv with the hefty end of a billiard
cue. The fellow who was struck thought
it was rather a cnc-rtoua way of passing
the compliments of the season, and forth
with reported the matter to the police.
Cooper was fined five dollars, which he
paid.
Sam Clayton’s ease was continued from
yesterday. Sam had stolen a good watch
from a female acquaintance and pawned
it for a small amount of Christmas money.
The watch was recovered and produced
in court yesterday morning. Sam admit
ted the theft, and was fined ten dollars.
His case should have gono to the County
Court. However, it is better that the
city should haTa made ten dollars out of
the case than the negro should be sent to
the chain-gang to escape at his leisure.
■sstracttaa mt Iks ■*>Mwr* mf Mr.
A. L. Perkins.
The residence of Mr. A. L. Perkins, of
Monroe county, waa entirely destroyed by
fire between five and six o'clock yesterday
morning. The fine was discovered shortly
after five o'clock, and it had then gained
such headway m to be entirely beyond
control. Indeed there waa no time to
save anything, but house and furniture
were consumed together. Mr. Perkins
Kav.-d his valuable papers, but beyond
this ai! was lost.
The residence was a large, two-story
frame building. There was a one-story
ghc.1 'lepartment attached to the main
house, which was used as a cook-room.
This part of the bouse was as well built
as the other, and every precaution was
taken to construct it in such a way a* to
provide the greatest security from firo.
There was no fire left in the kitchen the
night before, and none had been built
yesterday morning. At five o'clock there
was no sign of fire about the premises,
and shortly after the whole house was in
flames. How the fire originated is not
certainly known, but it is very sugges
tive that it should have caught at so
ear ly on hour in the morning, and before
any fires wore kindled on the premise).
The house was the best one in that
portion of Monroe county, and woe elab
orately and elegantly furnished through
out, including a fine new piano. "Wo
have hrsuvl no estimate of the loss.
Mr. Perkins is a man of means and of
indomitable energy, and a fatality of this
kind, while it entails a most serious lots,
will not set him bock a great deal. We
understand that it is his intention to re
build, at once, npon the same site.

Coroner's Inqneat—Funeral.
At nine o'clock yesterday morning Cor
oner Harman held on inquest npon the
body of Sam. D. Rainey, deceased, and
nfter hearing tho toatimony in the case,
the jury returned a verdict that the de
ceased came to his death from pneumo
nia, caused by a wound from a knife in
the hands of John J. Dunn.
The funeral of Mr. Rainey took place
yesterday afternoon, and was attended by
a number of friends of the family. The
Floyd Rifles, of which the deceased was
a member, turned out in full uniform, to
inter their comrade with the usual mili
tary honors. Tho funeral took place from
tho residence of the father of the de
ceased, on Walnut street. The religious
serviocs were conducted by Rev. J. O.
Branch, pastor of the Mulberry Street
Methodist Church.
Dunn has not been arrested. It is
understood, however, that he is ready to
come up at any timo when the grand
jury is in session, but does not wish to
run the risk of lying in jail for some timo
whilo awaiting trial. He is still out of
the city.
This makes the fourth homicide which
has occurred in Macon during (ho latter
half of the year.
THE HARMONIC SOCIETY.
The First Concert.
The Harmonic Society will give their
first ormrort in their ball in MMoni. Tom-
pie, next Tuesday evening, on which oc
casion some superb music may be ex
pected.
This is not a public concert, to which
tickets can be purchased, but one to
which only active and associate members
of the society are to bo admitted, togeth
er with such guests as they are entitled
to invite. Any member may invite two
ladies, or one gentleman who is not a res
ident of the city. No gentleman who re
sides in Macon can attend these concerts
unless he is an associate member of the
society. The associate membership is
already very large, which will give a good
attendance.
It may be well to state that any gen
tleman may become an associate member
by application to tho Secretary of tho So
ciety, Mr. T. U. Conner, who will present
their names to the committee, and when
authorized by the committee to do so, he
will issue the certificates of membership
upon payment of the dues of one dollar a
month. This membership entitles a per
son to attend all tho monthly rehearsals
and concerts, and gives him an equal
voice with the active members in the elec
tion of officers and managers of tho So
ciety.

UNIVERSAL LIFE INSURANCE CO.,
OF NFW YORK.
THE ORIGINAL STOCK LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY OF THE UNITED STATES.
Th)3 Company possesses the following attractive features :
1st* Its premiums are from 20 to 25 per cent, less than those usually charged
by other companies, thus enabling those contemplating insurance to secure beyond
contingency about one third more insurance than the same premium will secure m a
mutual company,
2d. These premiums are justified by experience, and more nearly accord with the
existing conditions of the basis of the business than those of any other company or
ganized in the State of New York. Their sufficiency and propriety have been abund
antly verified by the approval of the best financiers and actuaries in the country.
3d. The Universal offers a fair, straightforward and business-like contract so
much insurance for so much premium. .
4th. Everything promised in the Company’s advertising documents is guaranteed in 1 s
policy, including an equitable surrender-value clause, in which a stated amount ot
paid-up life or paid-up term insurance is given for each year of the policy.
5th. Losses paid in thirty days after proof of death. . , .
6th. The Company boa issued over 20,000 policies; is in a sound and nouns 1 g
condition, and enjoying a rapidly increasing patronage. ,
7th. Ample security. The ratio of assets to liabilities is 140 per cent., or in cthe
words, the Company has $140 for each $100 of its indebtedness.
