A Needle Quarry.
Fourteen or fifteen year* ago (says
the Montgomery Advertiser) a charming
young lady of this city received from an
aunt qf hers a pin cushion as a present.
Eight or ten days ago the lady gave the
cushion away—thinking that, as it was
well worn and well stricken in years be
sides, it had ceased to be of any value.
But the person to whom it was given lost
it, and a mischievous puppy founo and
tore it to pieces. When discovert-1, the
puppy was playing with a large glitter
ing mass, which, on examination, proved
to be needles of all sorts and sizes. They
had gradually collected in the saw-dust
with which the cushion was filled, and
becoming magnetized were adhering in a
sort of porcupine-like mass. Surprised
at the size of this prickly mass, another
lady of the household undertook the
somewhat tedious task of arranging the
needles iu regular files or rows and count
ing them. It turned out that there were
586 of them—all as good as new, with
perhaps a dozen exceptions on which
there were a few small spots of rust.
The lady who counted them paid the
party to whom the cushion had been
given $2 for the whole lot and kept them,
Ladies who have old pin-cushions to give
away would do well to make a ncte of
this occurrence.
A Pretty Prison Story.
A prisoner in the Missouri penitentiary,
too weak to work, ami who had the run
*-f the \ .us), one .lay asked the warden if
h • could be allowed to cultivate a small
..slier of the inclosure. "What do you
«nnt to raise r” Cucumbers, sir." ‘ Why,
you can't raise them here; the other
oil rs would steal them." •‘No, sir,’’
»•..! the man firmly; "they will not steal
of them.” “Well, go ahead," said
the warden; “if any of your cucumbers
are stolen, don’t come to mo with your
complaint*.” “You will never hear from
*■on that score, sir.” The cucumbers
*w* planted, watered, trained and culti-
v xtod, and an immense crop was the re-
' m. As fast, however, as tho fruit
Jtpened ii disappeared, and the warden
“ one convinced that the owner sold it
'•or. produce, or some other eontra-
o-ol article, lie directed the man to be
vatohed, and finally he waa detected in
: ' ' of carrying his cucumbers to the
i'-'-d and giving them to the poor fel

Will of Prof. Agassiz.
Boston, Jan. 9.—The will of professor
Louis Agassiz was admitted to probate in
Cambridge as follows : I give and be
queath to my son, Alex. E. E. Agassiz,
such of my scientific books as he may
select from my library, hoping that when
ho shall have no further nse for them he
will add them to the rest of my library of
scientific books, which I hereby give to
the Museum of comparative Zoology in
Cambridge. 2.1 give and devise aU the
rest of my estate now owned and here
after acquired unto my beloved wife,
Elizabeth C. Agassiz, to bold to her heirs
and assignees forever. I make no pro
vision for either of my daughters, Ida
and Pauline, hot from want of affection,
but for the reason that my house in Cam
bridge, subject to mortgage, is the only
remaining piece of property that I lrnvo
to dispose of. I appoint my wife afore
said to be sole executor of this, my will,
and direct that she be exempted from
giving surety on bond as such.

Wonderful Domestic Trnits,
Letter in the Arcadian.]
Ton should see Madame Nilsson in tlie
domestic circlo. She has the most won
derful faculty of ingratiating herself with
chldren. She will get down on the floor
among them, enter into all their fnn and
infantile architecture, and then precipi
tate them into ocstacies by whistling for
them, and sho whistles like a flute or a
nightingale, or playing the violin. It is
really wonderfnl to hear her whistle; no
odo ever could do it better. There is
nothing she is fonder of than a good
romp with a lot of lively children; ’she
mokes them all infatuated with her in
less than a minute, and she kicks up more
noise than an ciglit-horse-power school
girl. _____
The Chicago Times, an “Independent,”
certainly not a Democratic journal, con
cludes a notice of tho speech of Elliott,
the negro member from South Carolina,
on the civil rights bill in tho Honse of
Representatives the other day:
"And now, what is it that Elliott de
mands ? It is that the Constitution of
the United States shall be so altered that
a nigger may eat. sleep, ride and sit by
tho white man. Ho proposes to employ
the great government of the United
States as a police-usher who will how tho
nigger into tho whito man's company,
and then forco tho latter to submit to the
contact. If this should be done fer the
nigger, it should be dono for everybody;
and the federal power should at once ap
ply itself to tho duty of regulating every
man’s company nt ms table, in Ins bed,
or wherever else he may happen to be lo
cated.”
The point is well taken. H tlie Fed
eral Government has tho right to inter
fere in tlie one case it has in the other.

The cotton receipts at this place are

year. This fact tells the tale of hard
times more eloquently than mere words
can. It is simply sickening.

TRUMAN & GREEN,
MANUFACTURED BV
Langdale’s Chemical Manure
(LIMITED.)
NEWOASTLE-ON-TYNE, ENGLAND.
Has the following Powerful Recommendations for Planters
It is a genuine English made Manure, the only one in tho market, and manu
factured hy a company having a capital of $1,25Cy)00, which sells 40,000 tons annu
ally, and has the most extensive works of the kind in Great Britain, which liave
been in operation 24 years. Tha Longdate, therefore, has a good pedigree and is no
experiment.
It contains a larger proportion of chemical elemonts suited for tho promotion
of vegetable life, and especially of cotton, than any othor fertilizer offered in the
South. It is the best and safest Cotton Manure in the market.
The analysis given with the Manure when sold will be guaranteed. There shall
he no mistake about tho genuineness of the article, nor the good faith of the vendors.
It is the cheapest Manure offered, as it contains nothing but what is of use in
becoming plant-food, or hy chemical action on the soil, producing the same. The
test of cheapness is not tho price, hut the actual worth of the article purchased.
Low-priced Manure cannot contain efficient quantities of pure and valuable chemi
cals, which can alone give woith to a fertilizer, and bring satisfactory results. The
Langdale is as low in price as is consistent with the uso of the best ingredients, and
a fair commercial profit on its cost.
The employment of powerful maclunery in mixing and pulverizing the ingre
dients prepares every particle for service, and prevents trouble in using. Tho Lang
dale is unequalled in this respect, and impresses every one who sees it as a perfectly
manipulated Manure.
In its composition and preparation it is the result of careful scientific research
and experiment, confirmed by practical application for a quarter of a century. It
will he maintained at its present high standard, and is thus what planters have
long wanted—a thoroughly reliable and safe Manure.
THE MODEL MANURE AND PLANTER’S FRIEND.
