most popular gentleman (modesty forbids

eering at u lively rate for Alderman Has
dai, and that gentleman must be putting
in some good licks for himself, ns he is
taking chances in everything that is
raided.
Tho Sisters’ table, presided over by
Mrs. J. AY. Aderhold, is a very interest- I
ing one. Very many articles were made
and sent out for this fair by some Sisters
in Canada, others were made by the Sis
ters in this place; and Mrs. Aderhold
made quite a number of them herself.
Every article on the table will be dis
posed of either by raffle or at auction.
The ladies who have tho management
of this fair are acting as they usually do
on such occasions. By the time a man
runs the gauntlet of the Lull, unless he
be half-a-millionaire, he is divested of all
his loose change and has to buy his ci
gars on credit the balance of the even
ing. There are some ladies there who
that the directors had determined, as the
Macon society was out of debt and had
books and money enough for its opera
tions for another year, to piv" the entire
pro."" is of the collection to the parent
society. The collection realized $S7 0.7.
Tho society then went into an election
for officers for tlie ensuing year, with the
following result:
President, Rev. E H. Myers, D. D.
Vice President*, Kev. A. AY. Clisby,
Kev. B. Johnson, Rev. AY. H. McIntosh,
D. D., and Kev. J. J. Brantley, D. D.
Directors, Rev. Geo. G. N. McDoneU,
Rev. J. AY. Burke, Rev. James McBride,
Rev. S. S. Sweet, Hon. Clifford Anderson
and Messrs. B. L. Willingham and Thos.

Secretary, AY. D. AA'iliiams.
Treasurer and Depositary, Henry L.

The meeting then adjourned with the
doiology by the choir and congregation,
and the benediction by Rev. Dr. Myers.

MACON BIBLE SOCIETY.
Seventh Anniversary Sleeting.
The saventh anniversary meeting of
tho Macon Bible Society was held in the
First Baptist Church Sunday night, in
the presence of a large congregation of
people made up from tho congregations
of all the other Protestant churches in
the city. In consequence of this mcetin
no service was held in any of the other
churches, as all tho pastors nnd very
many out of each congregation feel n
deep interest in the work which is being
carried on by the Macon Bible Society
as an auxiliary of that great institution
known as tho Amercan Bible Society.
Clergymen of four different congrega
tions took active parts in the meeting,
thus showing that no matter howsbroadly
they may differ in creeds nnd forms there
were no differences between them upon
tho question of disseminating the Bible.
Rev. E. H. Myers, D. D., presided over
tho meeting, nijd the exercises were
opened with prayer by Rev. A. AV. Clisby,
pastor of the Presbyterian Chureh. Dur
ing tho evening some superb singing was
done by the choir of the First Baptist.

TREASURER S SUPPLEMENTAL REPORT.
At the date of the Treasurer’s report
in Slav, 1873, wo had on hand in books
$353 GO and in cash $169 02, making
$522 G2. We then owed the parent so
ciety $169 70, leaving a balance of avail
able means, over and above our indebted
ness, of $352 92.
At this date we have on hand, in books
$303 OS, and in cash $4G SO, making $319
3S, and our present indebtedness to the
parent societyJs $44 23, leaving a bal
ance of available means of $305 15.
This statement shows that we have
diminished our means the past year by
the sum of $17 77, which is thus ac
counted for: "We paid for the services

cess of expenditures of $47 77, which
was paid out of the means previously in

Dr. Vilboe’s Cod Liver Oil and Limb.—In
valids need no longer dread to taka that great
specific for consumption, asthma, and threaten;
ing coughs—Cod Liver OiL As prepared by Dr
Wilbor,-it is robbed of the nauseating taste, and
also embodies a preparation of the Phosphate of
Lime, giving nature the very article required to
aid the healing qualities o! the oil, and to recre
ate where disease has destroyed. This article also
forms a remarkable tonic, and xrill cause weak
and debilitated pel sons to become strong and ro
bust. It is for sale by all respectable druggists
throughout the country, and is an article that
should be kept in every family, for convenience of
instant nse on the first appearance of coughs or
irritation of the lungs. Manufactured only by A
B. Wilbor. Chemist, Boston. Sold by all drug
gists. .
Poisonous Medicines.—The theory that the
virus of disease can be safelv counteracted by
doses of poison, is false and dangerous. Within
the last twenty-five years not less than a score of
virulent poisons havo been added to the repository
of the medical profession. They are given in small
doses, otherwise they would destroy life immedi
ately; but even in minute quantities, they pro
duce ultimately very disastrous effects. It is un
wise and unphilosopliical to employ, as remedies,
powerful and insidious drags, which, in subju
gating ono disease, sow the seeds of another still
more unmanageable. None of these terrible med
icaments operates with as much directness and
certainty upon the causes of disease as Hostet-
ter’s Stomach Bitters, a tonic and corrective,
without a single deleterious ingredient in its com
position. Arsenic and quinia are given foi intcr-
mittents: bromide of potassium for nervous dis
orders ; strychnine aiid prussic arid for general
debility; mercury, in various forms, for liver
complaint; preparations of chloroform and opium
for sleeplessness; and yet these deadly drags do
not compare, as specifics for the diseases above
enumerated, with that wholesome vegetable in-
vigorant and alterative, while they are all so per
nicious that it is astonishing any physician should
take the responsibility of prescribing them. Let
invalids, for their own sakes, try the Bitters be
fore they resort to the poisons. The relief they
will experience from a course of the harmless
specific will render a recourse to the unsafe prep
arations referred to quite unnecessary.
