ing enough good things to put half the
mouths in the city to watering. A man
who cannot select a good Christmas din

hungry for a fortnight.
The Bnllnr Stare.
This establishment is doing a lively
trade these holiday times. They have a
large amount of goods suitable for holi
day presents, and sell them cheap. The
people appear to appreciate this fact,
from the way the store is crowded.
The Weather.
Sunday was the coldest day of the sea-
son. The wind came from the northwest
and hod evidently kissed snow somewhere
in its travels. Yeiterday was calm and
much more moderate. The afternoon
was haxy—indicating on early rain.

BATTLE AT MAMMOCKS STATION.
One Man Killer and Three Wounded
We have from two or three source* the
particulars of a bloody tragedy which oc
curred at Haddock’s station on the Ma
con and Augusta railroad, late yesterday
evening, between Dave and Will Her
rington, on one tide, and Tho*. O. Bowen
and his sons, Blount and James Bowen,
on the other side. ,
There seems to have been an old fsud
between the parties. The Herringtons,
especially Dave, were known to be des
perate men. It will be remembered that
be hvd an encounter with one of the
Hardeman’s tome mouths ago/ and in
flicted wounds which very nearly proved
fatal. We were unable to ascertain pre
cisely how the difficulty arose yesterday.
One gentleman said he came up just be
fore the shooting commenced. Quito a
number of persons were there. As he ap
proached he heard the old man Bowen
say to Dave Herrington, any man
who would curse and abuse another
when ho is drunk is a d—d coward.
Herrington made some remark, about
fighting it out right then, whereupon
Bowen drew a pistol and fired upon Her
rington, and immediately one of the
yonng Bowen’s fired upon him also with
a shot-gun and then struck the falling
man over the head with the gun breaking
the gun in so doing. Shooting then be
came general and was participated in by
Will Herrington and all three of the
Bowens. Some eighteen or twenty shots
wero fired. The senior Bowen was
wounded in the shoulder and his son
James, it is said, severely in the abdo
men. One of our informants doubted
tho latter statement as he saw all three
of the Bowen’s looking for Will Herring
ton when the train arrived. Blount
Bowen was not injured.
Will Herrington fell daring the affray,
and it was thought that he too had been
killed, bnt ho afterward got up and ea
caped. Tho Bowens were seeking him
when tho train left, vowing to kill him
also. It was supposed that he had
sought safety by escaping to the woods.
It is believed that he was wounded also,
as it was observed that he limped as he
ran off.
Dave Herrington was killed outright.
One of our informants saw him lying in
tho depot terribly shot, with life entirely
oxtinct. He has been a sort of terror in
the community for a long time, bnt his
reckless life lias hod a tragic end.
Our information in regard to the affair
is vory meagre. Tho tragedy occurred
just before the train drew up to tho
depot, and our informants had only a few
minutes in which to gather the facts.
We think our information is, in the main,
correct, though not nearly so full as wo
would like to have it. It was about dark
when the train left Haddock’s for Macon.

Ono hundred and two millions of dol
lars railroad capital was represented in
the meeting.
The object of the conference was to de-
vise some means to rectify tho evils
growing ont of the underbidding for
freight by competing lines. We under
stand that the meeting was entirely har
monious and that a division of business
was agreed upon, also uniform freight
tariffs. Tho meeting is likely to result
beneficially to tho road and to thepnhlic.

SUPPORT OF THE PAIJPESS.
Mr. "Ward Hakes a Statement.
Editors Telegraph and Messenger: An
article in your paper of the 16th instant
under tho head of “Taxes,” apparently
written by the County Commissioners, or
one of them, demands a notice from me.
Under the heading of “Paupers” in this
article these words occur: “Tho amount
used to carry on the county hospital and
to provide therein for the indigent poor,
h«a been reduced to less than one-half
the amount formerly used far this pur
pose.” As I, in my office as Ordinary
formerly managed the paupers and ad
ministered the public charity for their
relief, the statement is that the County
Commissioners manage this business at
less than half the expense I did. This is a
mistake, as the figures will show, and
they cannot lie. In your paper of Janu
ary 1C, 1S74, is the semi-annual state
ment of the Board of Commissioners,
which shows expended for hospital:
For Hospital $8,683 56
For Paupers 2A3732
Total for six months. $10,820 83
In your paper of July 14.1874, i* the
last semi-annual statement, which shows
For Hospital snd Paupers $4,30181
Total for the year. $15,125 69
During my administration from August
!5, 186s, to October, 1871, the whole
amount spent by me aas $9,712 12, or
very little over $3,000 per year. It is
true that during this period the city paid
two-thirds of the expenses of thus hos
pital ; but in October, 1871, the whole,
city sad county, was managed by ro«. and
from October 1,1871, to February 1,1873.
a period of sixteen months, I-expended
$18,127 12, or $13,500 pex annum. So
the County Commissioners spent in one
jesr $16,125 69
My average a year for sixteen
months 13,500 00
Difference in my favor per an-
°<“u $1,625 69
So that instead of their reducing this
expense to “loss than ont-half what it for
merly was,” they have inertaaed it $1,-625 69
per annum. C. T. Wans,
Ordinary.

Discovered.
Dr. Price has, after a long series of
experiments, discovered anew process of
extracting the subtle flavor from every
delicious fruit and aromatic. In his
Flavoring Extracts the characteristic
taste and freshness of the real fruit is
preserved, and by hi3 process so highly
concentrated that hut a small quantity
is required to impart their peculiar fla

used. Ladies that wish something su

tion of Norfolk. Ye.:
Tho Board of Directors of this Asso
ciation, feeling assured that the patrons
of their enterprise and the public gener
ally are satisfied that in its management
the interests of all concerned will be
strictly guarded, with honeety and fair
ness ; and relying upon the belief that all
who hare sided us in our effort to com
plete the Masonic Temple in this city,
are willing to rely upon our judgment as
to the expediency of another postpone
ment far a few days, notwithstanding onr
announcement that the concert would
positively be given on the 19th inst.,
have decided that a short delay will be
more satisfactory to all holders of tickets
than to have a partial drawing on Thurs
day next.
The following reasons have induced us
to this action:
First—While our receipts have been
large, they have not been of sufficient
amount to enable us to give a full draw
ing.
Second—A drawing on the 19th instant,
wonld not yield enough to accomplish the
object for which our Association was or
ganized and chartered; and,
Third—The encouragement which we
have received convinces ns that in forty
days more we shall, without any failure,
rive a drawing which in its results will
be acceptable to all our friends.
We have therefore fixed upon
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 29tH,
as the day when the Concert and distri
bution will take place, whether all the
tickets are sold or not, or the money will
be refunded upon application and pre
sentation of the tickets at tho Agency
where purchased.
By order of the Board of Directors.
Henby Y. Moore, Secretory.

Schenck’s Mandrake Fills will be found to
possess those qualities necessary to the total
eradication of all bilious attacks, prompt to start
the secretions of the liver, and give a healthy
tone to the entire system. Indeed, it is no or
dinary discovery in medical science to have in
verted a remedy for these stubborn complaints,
which develop all the results produced by a here-
tofore free use of calomel, a mineral justly
dreadod by mankind, and acknowledged to be
destructive in the extreme to the human system.
That the properties of certain vegetables com-
prise all the virtues of calomel without its inju
rious tendencies, is now an admitted fact, ren
dered indisputable by scientific researches; and
those who use the Mandrake Fills will be fully
satisfied that the best medicines are those pro
vided by nature in the common herbs and roots
of tho fields.
These pills open the bowels and correct all
bilious derangements without salivation or any
of tho injurious effects of calomel or other poi
sons. Tbo secretion of bilo is promoted by these
pills, as will be seen by tho altered color qf the
stools and disappearing of the sallow complexion
and cleansing of the tongue.
Ample directions for uso accompany each box
of bills.
Prepared only by J. H. Schcnck 4 Son, at their
principal office, corner Sixth and Arch streets,
Philadelphia, and for sale by all druggists and
dealers. Prico 25 cents per box.

I N order to offer to the public cheap coal, I nc-
cepted the agency of the Anderson County
Coal Mines and offered the coal at cost, the
mines paying me a small commission. I have de
livered a large quantity to consumers, and some
of them are due mo for the c«aL The coal costs
at the mines $2 50 -per ton, the freight and de
livery 37, making $0 50—my price for coal de
livered. The freight and delivery, which is about
seven-ninths of tbe entire cost, has to be paid be
fore I can deliver it, and as my commissions uro
only 15 cents per ton, I cannot afford to wait for
to-morroic, -next -iceck, or the first qf the month
for tbe money. If I had a large bank account I
might consider it, but having none at all it is
impossible. In future, parties wanting cheap
coal as good as any in the market, must bo pre
pared to pay for it on delivery. I mean business,
and no mistake.
