Boston, December 22.—Tho courtesies
of the city have been tendered to King
“Catching a Hob.”
Yesterday afternoon when Mrs. Blaine,
of Fifth street, asked the doctor if her
boy Samuel would lire, the doctor looked
rery serious and replied:
"He may, and if he does he will know
more than erer before."
Samuel is acred 13, and since the snow
came he has been engaged in “ catching
a bob," as the farmers call it when they
jump on to a farmer’s sleigh. He was
oyer on Fourth street yesterday when a
farmer’s team came along, with a hay
rack, and Samuel took a short distance
and then let go and stepped into the
coils of a rope dragging behind, and be
fore he knew what was np he was drag
ging along the slush. He gave an awful
yell as ho realized his situation, but the
farmer lost his hearing years ago, and sat
on his seat as stiff os the Cardiff giant,
while the horses ambled along at an eren
pace.
"Whoop! Hay! Say you ! Oh, mur
der !” yelled Samuel, as the slush ran up
his pantaloons and his back was raked on
the knobby street, but the farmer was
thinking of home, sweet home, and didn't
reply. “You, there! Whoop! Hi! Ho 1
Gracious and blazes!’’ roared Samuel, as
be slid on his back and side and felt hi3
coat going over his head.
The farmer droye up Fourth to La-
broaae, aud then went west, and there
Wasn't a hub or a pend of water that Sam
uel Blaine didn’t find. Sometimes he was
on his back, and then ho would glide for
awhile t’other side up, and he kept up a
yelling which made people run to the
windows. Some boys observed his situa
tion, but they thought it was a new kind
of way to "catch a bob," and they yelled,
“Bully for Samuel Blaine!’’
"Say! I’m being drawedto death—
stop yer bosses!” shouted Sam; but the
farmer was thinking of a grave on the
hill-side, and ho never tnrned his head.
A man stopped on the walk andLyelled
"Say! you’vo got a boy there!” but
tho farmer nodded his head and kept on.
Finally, as he turned into Eight street
and headed for Michigan avenue, he
looked around. Seeing Samuel coming
up behind, rolling over and over, he
thoughttheboy was trying to catch onand
he put tbe "bud” to his homes and went
threo blocks farther and drew up at a
grocery.
_ When they discovered the boy’s situa
tion they said it would take forty pounds
of glue to mend him up, and one man
advised killing him at once so as to save
Mrs. Blaine a doctor bill, bnt wiser coun
sel prevailed and they carried him home.
His mother couldn't recognize him at
first; she said they couldn’t pass that
mud and slush-bedraggled form off on
her as her beloved Samuel, but when
finally convinced that it was he, she dug
the snow out of his cars and wailed:
"Oh! Samuel, why did you try to catch
a bob!”—Detroit Free Press.
Wliat a Hiss Cost.
Very recently at Veveyse, in the Can
ton of Friburg, a yonng baker received a
visit from two young girls whose object
was to settle a bread account. In squar
ing th e account there was a centime short,
and tbe baker laughingly proposed to
liquidate this balance by kissing tbe el
der one of the two sisters, who was sixteen
years of age, to which she acceded. This
amused tho younger girl, who in herturn
also received a kiss.
When they relumed homo they re
counted tho circumstances to their pa
rents as a piece of pleasantry j but the
father was by no mean3 disposed to view
the occurrence in this light. He imme
diately wont off to consult the cure, who
characterized the act as a scandal; the
latter forthwith went to the Syndic, and
this functionary, without loss of time,
mustered the whole Communal Council,
and tho affair began to assume colossal
proportions.
A charge of attempt at corruption was
launched against tbe baker, and judicial

judged it prudent to leave his business
and tho town, and take refuge in Geneva;
but justice was not to be defeated, and
tbe authorities of Friburg demanded the
extradition of tbe youth from the Gov
ernment of Geneva.
Ho was given up, seemingly without
hesitation, and was incarcerated in tho
prison of Chatel for eighteen days before
lie case came on for bearing. Tho
charge was eventually referred to tho
